1 Badminton at Birmingham University of Birmingham Sport (UBSport) is among the best universities for badminton in the country, and a high performance centre for Badminton England. As a priority sport, the Badminton club benefits from the services and support of the Hi Performance Centre which includes fitness testing and screening, nutritional advice, sports medicine, physiotherapy services and sports psychology support. Famous Alumni Alyssa Lim (BA English 2011) has been mixed doubles National Champion as a junior and continues to progress through the senior ranks at a great rate. Alyssa competed in the 2010 and 2012 World University Championships placing 7th in her latest attempt, UBSport has a great set-up for supporting athletes who are aiming to reach the top level of their sport. I have found the strength & conditioning and physiotherapy support particularly invaluable. The staff are really welcoming and are able to offer advice and guidance to help you reach your full potential. Alyssa is currently looking to qualify for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2014 and is working towards 2016 and 2020 Olmypic aspirations. Additionally, recent Alumni Catherine Grant and James Lauder both have representational honours at England Junior level. James continues to train from the University itself and alongside climbing the UK rankings and competing internationally, he coaches and mentors our aspiring Badminton studentship to continue in the manner that Birmingham has established in recent years.

2 Badminton at Birmingham Competition The club takes part in the annual British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) team and individual Championships. Three mens teams and two womens teams enter into the BUCS leagues, progressing to knock-outs after Christmas and culminating in a multi sport Championships in March. Players also have the opportunity to be selected for English and British University sides. In addition to BUCS competitions, the club runs seven teams in the Birmingham League, with the top teams competing very successfully in division 1 for men s, women s and mixed doubles. Results Birmingham is consistently ranked within the top 3 universities for sport and for badminton in the UK. Over the past 10 years, UBSport has produced the BUCS men s singles individual champion on 6 occasions, twice in the women s singles and won 6 gold medals in the knock-out competitions. Current scholar, Jana Ciznarova, competes for Slovakia on a senior level and achieved multiple BUCS quarter-final positions in 2013 for the University club. Studying at Birmingham The University of Birmingham was established in 1900 and has long been one of the premier academic institutes in the UK; As a top 3 university for sport it is an ideal place to combine sport with a well respected programme of study. 5 The University awards scholarships each year to National and International level athletes who are studying, or are about to study, at Birmingham. These awards provide financial and specialist support to talented young athletes. I chose the University of Birmingham as it has a great course and the Hockey is second-to-none, with pitches on campus and the support that is always there when I m struggling. Everything I need is offered to me to aid my development as a player. Anna Toman GB Junior International (Hockey) Benefits o Annual peak membership to the University gym and swimming pool o Free access to sports specific training facilities o Access to sports science and sports medicine support services o Access to strength and conditioning (S&C) coaching and S&C performance gym o High performance coaching o Performance athlete life skills workshops o Allocated mentor for lifestyle support o Funding towards cost of equipment, competition and training costs If I had gone to another University and studied Medicine, without the support of my course and the scholarships team, I have no doubt that I would have missed out on competing for Great Britain as I have in the past year. Lauren Howarth GB Junior International (Athletics) I would strongly encourage any aspiring sportsperson to come to Birmingham, the staff are great and have provided all that I have asked of them and have helped me tremendously. Tom Hickman (Karate) World Junior #1 and British Senior Representative. Birmingham is fantastic; I came solely for my Athletics but ended up falling in love with the city and the set-up here. The scholarship team have had a major impact on my success; it s definitely a set-up that you can come into and excel within. Mike Sweeney (Athletics, Decathlon) GB U23 Representative.
