Course Description: This course will introduce students to current teaching methods in chemistry and review selected topics in Organic Chemistry while developing problem solving and communication skills. Students will be actively involved in problem solving sessions and serve as peer leaders for CHM 110 (Organic Chemistry I) recitation sections. Students must have completed CHM 110 and CHM 112 at Lehigh University. Prereq. CHM 110 and/or CHM 112 Credits: 1.0 Course Outcomes: This course will: 1) Provide hands-on experience for students to serve as peer leaders in small group settings to help others learn key problem solving skills and study techniques necessary for success in Organic Chemistry. 2) Emphasize the development and effective communication of problem solving strategies. 3) Expose students to current pedagogy in teaching and learning Organic Chemistry. Student Learning Outcomes: At the end of this course, students will be able to: 1) Discuss different teaching and learning techniques and styles. 2) Evaluate various on-line tools available to Organic Chemistry students and recommend ways to incorporate such tools into a study plan for Organic Chemistry. 3) Develop and communicate problem solving strategies used to solve synthetic and mechanistic based Organic Chemistry problems. 4) Incorporate active listening, critical thinking and questioning techniques into small group problem solving sessions. Text: Organic Chemistry 8 th Edition by L.G. Wade Jr. and an access code to the on-line homework/testing site MasteringChemistry. The textbook is suggested but not required. The 1

2 online access code is required. You do not need to purchase a new code. Your code from last year will work. Attendance: Attendance is mandatory and part of your grade (5 points per session). You must attend the recitation section you have registered for and the Friday meeting as well. You may NOT switch recitation sections. If you must miss a class meeting (Friday meeting or recitation), you must notify me as soon as possible. Students are allowed a maximum of one unexcused absence for a Friday meeting sessions and one EXCUSED absence of a recitation session without penalty. Additional absences will result in a penalty. Tardiness: Please make sure you are on time for all class meetings. You must allow yourself time to sign in and assemble your group. We will start all recitation sessions at 12:10 pm. Any peer leader that is more than 5 minutes late for a session without informing me at least an hour before will earn 0 points for attendance for that session. Your group of students is counting on you to be there. If you will be more than 15 minutes late for a session, do not come at all interrupting another student s session will be more disruptive than helpful. Leaving Early: You are expected to be present for the entire session. Peer Leaders that need to leave a class meeting early for any reason must inform the Instructor before the session, if the reason for leaving early is excusable, the student will be granted permission to leave early without penalty. A student will only be allowed to leave a recitation session early without penalty once during the semester. If you need to leave early and do not have a reasonable excuse, you will not receive full credit for attending the session and may lose all attendance points for that session. Course Grading Policy: Your final grade for the course will be calculated as follows: Mastering Chemistry or other on-line Assignments/Evaluations Attendance (5 points per session) Feedback Assignments/Evaluations (10 pts each: 110 pts. MAX) Instructor/Student Evaluations of Peer Leader 100 points 120 points 110 points 30 points Total Points = 360 2

3 Your final grade for the course will be determined based on the percentage of the total points you earned over the semester. The exact cut offs for grades (including +/- grades) will not be determined until after the Final Exam. Approximate ranges are as follows: % A 80-90% B 70-80% C 60-70% D less than 60% F Lecture Notes and Course Materials: Some (but not all) course material will be available on CourseSite. Hard copies of worksheets and other course material will be provided during the Friday meeting times. Course Structure and Assignments: The overall goal of this course is to allow students the opportunity to serve as peer leaders in order to help others learn the fundamentals and problem solving skills necessary in Organic Chemistry. In order to be effective peer leaders, the leaders must be prepared for each recitation session. As peer leaders, you will also provide feedback to the Instructor of the course (recitation) on both your group s overall performance on the problem set as well as on your own performance as a leader. Therefore, the three key elements of the course and grade are: preparation, recitation session, feedback. Preparation: Each week we will go over problems on one or two specific topics in recitation. There will be a Mastering Chemistry or other assignment used to help you review the topic. In addition, you may be asked to provide feedback on some Mastering Chemistry or other on-line learning tools. Both the Mastering Chemistry assignments and your evaluations will be part of your grade for the class. In addition to Mastering Chemistry or other on-line learning tools, we will review key points needed to help prepare for recitation during the Friday session. Recitation Session: Attendance is mandatory (and part of your grade) at your assigned recitation session. You will be assigned a group of students to work with during recitation. Do not trade recitation sessions with another student. Your job will be to help guide students through the worksheet for that session. This is your opportunity to work on your communication and listening skills. Do not do the problems for them, you are there to guide and help engage them in the session. Feedback and Evaluation: The final element of this course will be to provide me with feedback on both how your group did and how you felt you did. You will fill out a form after each recitation session and submit it to me at the Friday session immediately following the recitation. If you missed a recitation session, you cannot submit a feedback/evaluation form. 3

4 Mastering Chemistry Assignments: The Mastering Chemistry Course ID is: CHM250FALL16FERNANDEZ43317 There are two different types of assignments on Mastering Chemistry: Tutorials and Dynamic Study Modules. Tutorials with Marvin Sketch : As part of your preparation, you will be assigned tutorials in Mastering Chemistry. These tutorials will include the chemical drawing software Marvin Sketch. These tutorials (and your feedback on these tutorials) will be part of your grade. You may work with other CHM 250 students to complete the tutorials but NEVER with CHM110 students. Assignments and due dates will be posted as the semester progresses. Mastering Chemistry Dynamic Study Modules: The Dynamic Study Modules are posted to allow you to review the material from Organic I. Most will be optional, others may be required for credit. You may work with other CHM 250 students to complete the tutorials but NEVER with CHM110 students. Working with CHM 110 students on Dynamic Study Modules is a direct violation of the University s Code of Academic Integrity. Dynamic Study Module assignments and due dates: 1. Organic Chemistry Stereochemistry DSM 2. Organic Chemistry Substitution/Elimination Reactions DSM 3. Organic Chemistry Alkene Reaction Names and Outcomes DSM 4. Organic Chemistry Alkyne Reactions DSM 5. Organic Chemistry Alcohol Reactions DSM 6. Organic Chemistry Organometallic Reactions DSM General Notes for Mastering Chemistry: Each assignment must be completed before the due date/time. Since you have multiple days to complete each assignment, late submissions will not receive credit regardless of the reason for your failure to submit the assignment before the deadline. Students are required to have a secure and reliable internet connection to access the Mastering Chemistry platform. Mastering Chemistry recommends specific settings for maximum performance make sure you have followed the recommendations when you sign up for your account. Mastering Chemistry assignments will not be reset for any reason including technical difficulties. You will have 48 hours after the due date of each assignment to contact (in person, by phone or ) your Instructor regarding any discrepancies with your score: after this period, all scores are final. Miscellaneous Policies/Procedures: You are a serving as a peer LEADER and your behavior should reflect a leadership position. Be respectful of your role; watch what you do and say with respect to the course, course materials, Instructors, TA s, your fellow peer leaders and most importantly your group of students. You are not a personal tutor to any student. It is a violation of the University s 4

5 policy on Academic Integrity to assist students with graded assignments including Mastering Chemistry. If a student approaches you and asks for such assistance, please report the incident to me. There will be a NO ELECTRONICS policy during recitation sessions and Friday sessions. Cell phones, i-pods, i-pads, tablets, laptop computers, and all other electronic devices and technologies with calculation software, memories or communication capabilities may NOT be used during any class meeting times unless the Instructor specifically asks students to use them. Such devices must be removed from the desk and put away. Please make sure your cell phone is silenced before putting it away. If there are any issues with the use of electronic devices after one initial warning, you will receive a Section 3 notice. If there are any violations of this electronics policy by a student after receiving a Section 3 notice, you will lose all attendance points for the session in which the additional violation has occurred. You should come to class prepared. Be prepared for your recitation session by bringing your notes, but do not show students your answers. You are there to guide and engage them, but not to do the problems for them. Students are expected to show respect for their classmates, themselves, and their instructors by conducting themselves with maturity, demonstrating sincere interest and respect for the ideas of others, and employing good manners. Specifically this means (but is not limited to) making sure your cell phone is silenced, not talking while the Instructor is reviewing material (times other than working in a group setting), being respectful of others when they ask or answer questions, and make sure you are on-time. No part of class sessions or recitation can be recorded (audio or video). A student requiring this particular academic accommodation must register with the Office of Academic Support Services at the beginning of each semester and then provide me with the official accommodation letter. It is your responsibility to keep track of your grades on your own. Simply keep a running total of your points to see where you stand. I will check and respond to throughout the day within reasonable working hours (typically between 9 am and 5 pm, Monday-Friday). I may periodically check over the weekend.
