SCHEDULING REMINDERS NOVEMBER 1, AUGUST 31, 2016 HOLY DAYS OF OBLIGATION Friday, December 25, 2015 Solemnity, The Nativity of the Lord Friday, January 1, 2016 Solemnity, Mary, Mother of God Thursday, May 5, 2016 Solemnity, Ascension of the Lord No Funeral Masses or Ritual Masses may be celebrated on any Holy Day of obligation. Monday, August 15, 2016 Solemnity, Assumption of the BVM (not obligatory) Funeral Mass permitted on this day; Ritual Masses not permitted. FUNERAL MASSES AND HOLY DAYS Funeral Masses are not permitted on solemnities that are holy days of obligation, Holy Thursday, the Easter Triduum, and the Sundays of Advent, Lent, and Easter (cf. GIRM, 380). On these days the body of the deceased may be brought into the church for the Funeral Liturgy Outside of Mass (OCF, 77). Funeral Masses are permitted on Holy Days only when the precept to attend Mass is abrogated. ADVENT Sunday, November 29, 2015, is the First Sunday of Advent. This is the beginning of the liturgical year. The Sunday readings are taken from Cycle C and weekday readings are from Year II. Funeral, Ritual and Votive Masses (weddings, etc.) are not permitted on the Sundays of Advent. COLOR OF VESTMENTS The color for Advent is violet. In order to distinguish between the seasons of Advent and Lent, it is recommended that the darker shades of purple (sometimes called Royal purple ) be used during Advent while the redder shades of violet (sometimes called Roman purple ) be reserved for Lent. CHRISTMAS TREE The Book of Blessings, Chapter 49, provides the Order for the Blessing of a Christmas Tree. See also Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers, p. 78 The use of the Christmas tree is relatively modern. Its origins are found in the medieval mystery plays which depicted the tree of paradise and the Christmas light or candle which symbolized Christ, the Light of the World. (Book of Blessings, 1570) According to custom, the Christmas tree is set up just before Christmas and may remain in place until the Solemnity of the Epiphany. Although the primary place for the Christmas tree is the home, at times one or more may also be placed in the church. In such a case, the decoration of the trees should be appropriate to their use in the church, and care should be taken that they do not interfere with the requirements of the liturgical space. (Book of Blessings, 1571) The Christmas tree may be blessed on or before Christmas during a celebration of the word of God, or during Morning or Evening Prayer. (Book of Blessings, 1572) ADVENT COMMUNAL PENANCE SERVICES Every effort should be made to schedule communal celebrations of the sacrament of Penance during the season Year of Mercy Advent communal penance service is available on the website (under The Liturgical Year/Advent and Christmas ).
CHRISTMAS MANGER The Book of Blessings, Chapter 48, provides the Order for the Blessing of a Christmas Manger. See also Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers, p. 82 The blessing of the Christmas manger or nativity scene, according to pastoral circumstances, may take place on the Vigil of Christmas or at another more suitable time. (Book of Blessings, 1542) If the manger is set up in the church, it must not be placed in the presbyterium (sanctuary). A place should be chosen that is suitable for prayer and devotion and is easily accessible by the faithful. (Book of Blessings, 1544) SUNDAY, DECEMBER 27, HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH Intercessions and a blessing for families can be found in the Book of Blessings, 40. FRIDAY, JANUARY 1, SOLEMNITY OF MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD In 2016, this day is a Holy Day of Obligation. Funeral, Ritual and Votive Masses are not permitted on this day. A solemn blessing for the Beginning of the Year can be found under Solemn Blessings in the Roman Missal (number 3, page 527, Catholic Book edition). THURSDAY, DECEMBER 24, 2015 CHRISTMAS MASS DURING THE NIGHT Traditionally, the birth of Christ is proclaimed at the Christmas Mass During the Night. Music and text can be found in the Roman Missal Appendix I: Various Chants for the Order of Mass (page 1293, Catholic Book edition). The proclamation may be chanted or recited before the beginning of Christmas Mass During the Night. The proclamation may be sung or recited at the ambo by a deacon, cantor or reader. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 25, THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST The Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ is a Holy Day of Obligation. Funeral, Ritual and Votive Masses are not permitted on this day. A solemn blessing for the Nativity of the Lord can be found under Solemn Blessings in the Roman Missal (number 2, page 526, Catholic Book edition). In scheduling Masses care must be taken not to multiply Masses on Christmas Eve to the detriment of Christmas itself. Anticipated Masses of Sundays and holy days (Christmas included) are to take place in the evening. (see Canon ) The policy of the Archdiocese is that that no Christmas Eve Masses are to be scheduled before 4 pm. Note: The scheduling of Christmas pageants for adults or children within Mass is not permitted. The Mass is not an historical reenactment of the events of salvation history and care should be taken not to give the impression that the liturgy of the word is a play. This is not to say that dramatic elements may not be used, e.g. readings may at times be divided into parts among the children (see Directory for Masses with Children, 47), however, the use of costumes, etc. is more appropriate in the context of other celebrations or services. Care should be taken especially at Christmas...not to stage the various liturgies as plays. The Christmas Mass should not be presented as a birthday party for Jesus, nor should secular notions of Santa Claus be introduced into the Christmas liturgy. (Lectionary for Masses with Children, 52) SUNDAY, JANUARY 3, THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD Traditionally, the date of Easter is proclaimed on the Solemnity of the Epiphany. Music and text can be found in the Roman Missal Appendix I: Various Chants for the Order of Mass (page 1291, Catholic Book edition). The proclamation may be sung or proclaimed at the ambo by a deacon or cantor after the Gospel. A solemn blessing for the Epiphany of the Lord can be found under Solemn Blessings in the Roman Missal (number 4, page 528, Catholic Book edition). SUNDAY, JANUARY 10, THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD The Christmas season ends with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. The Rite for the Blessing and Sprinkling of Water found in the Roman Missal, Appendix II (page 1296, Catholic Book edition) may be used in place of the Penitential Act. The First Week of Ordinary Time begins the following day, Monday, January 11, JANUARY 22, 2016 In all the dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 (or January 23, when January 22 falls on a Sunday) shall be observed as a particular day of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion, and of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life. The Mass "For Peace and Justice" (no. 21 of the "Masses for Various Needs") should be celebrated with violet vestments as an appropriate liturgical observance for this day. (General Instruction of the Roman Missal 2002, 373)
FIRST COMMUNION It is also appropriate that children receive their First Communion on one or other of the Sundays of Easter. (Circular Letter Concerning the Preparation and Celebration of the Paschal Feasts, 103) Apart from exceptional cases, it is not particularly appropriate for First Communion to be administered on Holy Thursday of the Lord s Supper. Another day should be chosen instead, such as a Sunday between the Second and Sixth Sunday of Easter, or the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, or the Sundays of Ordinary Time, since Sunday is rightly regarded as the day of the Eucharist. (Redemptionis Sacramentum, 87) WEDDINGS On days when ritual Masses are permitted, one of the wedding Masses (RM, Ritual Masses, IV. Wedding Mass, 1. For the Celebration of Marriage) with its proper readings may be celebrated. When the ritual Mass is not celebrated, one of the readings may be chosen from those provided in the Lectionary for Mass for the ritual Mass for weddings. On the days listed above (cf. listing under confirmation) the Mass of the day with its readings is celebrated, with the nuptial blessing included and, as circumstances suggest, the proper solemn blessing. Mass vestments are the color of the day. It should be noted that if the Mass in which the sacrament of marriage is celebrated is a regular parish Mass, the Mass of the day is celebrated, even on the Sundays of the Christmas season and of Ordinary Time. The ritual Mass for Marriage is not permitted on Holy Days on which the precept to attend Mass is abrogated, since these days still rank as solemnities. With the exception of the Easter Triduum, the Rite of Marriage Outside of Mass is always permitted, regardless of the feast or solemnity. CONFIRMATION On days when ritual Masses are permitted, the ritual Mass for confirmation (RM, Ritual Masses, I. Christian Initiation, 4. Confirmation), with its proper readings, may be celebrated. Red vestments may be worn. On days when the ritual Mass is not permitted, one of the readings may still be taken from those provided in the Lectionary for Mass for the ritual Mass for confirmation. The final blessing proper to the ritual Mass may always be used. When confirmation is celebrated on any of the days listed below, the Mass of the Day with its readings is celebrated. Mass vestments are the color of the day. 1. Easter Triduum of the Lord s passion and resurrection 2. Christmas, Epiphany, Ascension, and Pentecost. Sundays of Advent, Lent, and the Easter season. Ash Wednesday Weekdays of Holy Week from Monday to Thursday inclusive Days within the octave of Easter (This includes Saturday, April 2, Solemnities of the Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and saints listed in the General Calendar. All Souls. 4. Proper solemnities, namely: a. solemnity of the principal patron of the place, that is, the city or state; b. solemnity of the dedication of a particular church and the anniversary; c. solemnity of the title of a particular church; d. solemnity of the title or of the founder or of the principal patron of a religious order or congregation. 5. On Sundays of Ordinary Time, the ritual Mass of Confirmation is permitted. Red vestments may be used. SOLEMN ANNUAL EXPOSITION Parishes should make every effort to choose an appropriate date for the observance of a day of Solemn Annual Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins at the concluding rite of the last Mass and continues through the day with appropriate prayer services. Exposition concludes most often with a service of Evening Prayer during which benediction occurs. (see Order for the Solemn Exposition of the Holy Eucharist)
LENT TRIDUUM 2016 REMINDERS THE APOSTLES CREED DURING LENT AND EASTER The rubric found in the Roman Missal for the Order of Mass 19 stipulates that: Instead of the Niceno - Constantinopolitan Creed, especially during Lent and Easter Time, the baptismal Symbol of the Roman Church, known as the Apostles Creed, may be used. The reason this option is recommended particularly for Lent/Easter Time is because of its close relationship with baptism. The Apostles Creed is the basis for the baptismal promises made by the elect before they are baptized. It is also used for the renewal of baptismal promises at Easter and by parents and godparents when bringing a child for baptism. THE SAINTS DURING LENT Solemnities and feasts are celebrated as usual. Memorials of the saints are not celebrated during Lent, but they may be commemorated as follows: AT MASS The opening prayer of the saint may replace the opening prayer of the Lenten weekday. The Scripture readings are always those of the Lenten weekday. The prayer over the gifts and prayer after communion are always the prayers of the Lenten weekday. The Lenten Preface is always used (Lenten Prefaces may be used with the Eucharistic Prayers for Reconciliation). The color is always violet. LENTEN COMMUNAL PENANCE SERVICES Every effort should be made to schedule communal celebrations of the sacrament of Penance during the season of Lent. Additional opportunities for individual confessions may be scheduled in the parishes according to pastoral need. Lenten Communal Penance Services should not be scheduled during the days of the Triduum, nor on the Monday of Holy Week, March 21, 2016, to allow priests and people to attend the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral Basilica. A Year of Mercy Lenten Communal Penance service will be available on the website under Liturgical Year/ Lent. IN THE LITURGY OF THE HOURS AT THE OFFICE OF READINGS After the second reading (with its responsory) from the Lenten weekday the readings of the saint (with its responsory) may be added with the concluding prayer of the saint. AT MORNING AND EVENING PRAYER The ending of the concluding prayer may be omitted and the antiphon and the prayer of the saint may be added. 5 SUNDAY LENTEN GOSPELS The Gospel Readings for Lent are arranged as follows: The first and second Sundays maintain the account of the Temptation and Transfiguration of the Lord, with readings from all three Synoptics. On the next three Sundays, the Gospels of the Samaritan women, the man born blind, and the raising of Lazarus have been restored in Year A. Because these Gospels are of major importance in regard to Christian Initiation, they may also be read in Year B and Year C, especially in places where there are catechumens. Other texts, however, are provided for Year B and Year C: for Year B, a text from John about Christ s coming glorification through his cross and resurrection, and for Year C, a text from Luke about conversion. On Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion the text for the procession are selections from the Synoptic Gospels concerning the Lord s solemn entry into Jerusalem. For the Mass the reading is the account of the Lord s Passion. From the Introduction to the Lectionary for Sunday Mass, 97. FUNERALS ON HOLY THURSDAY AND DURING THE TRIDUUM Funeral Masses are NOT permitted on Holy Thursday morning or during the days of the Easter Triduum. On these days the body of the deceased may be brought to the church and the Funeral Liturgy Outside of Mass may be celebrated. (OCF, ) A memorial Mass should be celebrated on a convenient date after Easter Sunday. EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament is prohibited during the Easter Triduum, even in places where perpetual adoration is held. Under no circumstances may perpetual exposition take place during the Easter Triduum. (Thirty-One Questions on Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, 26) Therefore, the Eucharist is not to be exposed at any time on Holy Thursday through evening prayer of Easter Sunday. REMOVING HOLY WATER FROM THE FONTS DURING THE SEASON OF LENT The removal of holy water from the fonts during the season of Lent is not permitted. Fonts are only emptied of holy water on the days of the Sacred Triduum in preparation of the blessing of the water at the Easter Vigil. MONDAY, MARCH 21, 2016 CHRISM MASS The Chrism Mass will be celebrated at 8:00 PM in the Cathedral Basilica. The Holy Oils will be distributed after the Mass. More information will follow on the distribution of oils. Pastors should see to it that the old oils are properly disposed of and that they are replaced by the newly blessed oils. Do not add new oils to the old. DISTRIBUTION OF HOLY COMMUNION TO THE SICK DURING THE TRIDUUM According to the Church s ancient tradition, the sacraments are not celebrated on Good Friday or during the day on Holy Saturday. The rubrics of the Missale Romanum indicate that only the sacraments of the Anointing of the Sick and Penance are celebrated on Good Friday and Holy Saturday. (Missale Romanum, Rubrics for Good Friday, 1). Holy Communion may be brought at any hour of the day to the sick who cannot take part in the service on Good Friday. On Holy Saturday, Holy Communion may be given only as viaticum. HOLY THURSDAY According to the Church s ancient tradition, all Masses without a congregation are prohibited on this day. The Mass of the Lord s Supper is celebrated in the evening. (see, Circular Letter Concerning the Preparation and Celebration of the Paschal Feasts, 47) Additional Masses on Holy Thursday are to be permitted by the Ordinary, only for those in no way able to participate in the evening Mass and not for the advantage of individuals or special small groups. (Missale Romanum, Rubrics for the Evening Mass of the Lord s Supper (EM, 3) Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy Newsletter, March/April 2003) Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should not be installed on Holy Thursday. First Communion should not be celebrated on Holy Thursday.
FOOT WASHING RITE The preferred number of people for the washing of feet is 12; however, the number may exceed or be even less than 12. It has become customary in many places to invite both men and women to be participants in this rite in recognition of the service that should be given by all the faithful to the Church and to the world. (BCL Newsletter, February 1978) Note: The practice of washing hands in place of the washing of the feet is not permitted. The rite clearly calls for an imitation of Christ who washed the feet of his disciples at the Last Supper. No substitution for the washing of feet is allowed. GOOD FRIDAY The Celebration of the Lord s Passion is to take place in the afternoon, at about three o clock. For pastoral reasons, an appropriate time may be chosen in order to allow the people to assemble more easily, for example, shortly after midday or in the late evening, however, not later than nine o clock. (Circular Letter Concerning the Preparation and Celebration of the Paschal Feasts, 63) Although Stations of the Cross are permitted, they are never to replace nor be given greater prominence than the Celebration of the Lord s Passion. Good Friday, and, if possible, on Holy Saturday until the Easter Vigil, the paschal fast is observed everywhere to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more deeply in his resurrection. See Good Friday rcan.org/sites/default/files/files/good Friday.pdf It is recommended that there be a communal celebration of the Office of Readings and Morning Prayer on Good Friday and Holy Saturday. See rcan.org/sites/default/files/files/mornofftr.pdf EASTER VIGIL Sunset will take place at 7:29 pm on Saturday, March 26, This means that the Easter Vigil is not to begin before 8:15 pm at the earliest. No other Masses may be celebrated on Holy Saturday before the Easter Vigil is completed. Once the Vigil is completed, Masses for Easter may be celebrated even if it is still Saturday evening. In the Archdiocese of Newark, the Archbishop has directed that there is to be one and only one Easter Vigil in a given parish. The Archbishop has further directed that groups which may have become accustomed to celebrate separately (i.e. either privately or individually) be invited to join the one parish Easter Vigil celebration. Nine readings are assigned to the Easter Vigil: seven from the Old Testament, and two from the New Testament. It should be noted that the Roman Missal requires that at least three Old Testament readings, always including Exodus 14, must be read at the Easter Vigil. Of course, all nine readings must be read whenever it can be done, so that the character of a Vigil which takes place over some duration of time can be observed. (EV, 20, Bishops Committee on the Liturgy Newsletter, January 2003) EASTER SUNDAY On Easter Sunday the rite of the renewal of baptismal promises is done after the homily. It is found in the texts of the Easter Vigil. The Creed is omitted. The Easter Triduum ends with the conclusion of Evening Prayer. The tradition of celebrating Vespers on Easter Sunday with the singing of psalms is an appropriate conclusion. BAPTISMAL GARMENT The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults describes the optional clothing of the neophyte with the baptismal garment immediately following baptism. The most appropriate vesture for neophytes would be a white garment, probably in the shape of an alb or choir robe. If a baptismal garment is not specially created, an alb or white choir robe could appropriately be used. It is normally worn by the neophytes for liturgical prayer during the Octave of Easter. In no instance should those who are not ordained be vested in chasuble, stole or dalmatic.
WEDDINGS ON APRIL 1 AND 2, 2016 Friday, April 1, and Saturday, April 2, 2016, are listed as solemnities and are within the octave of Easter. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 330, states: Ritual Masses are prohibited on solemnities, on days within the octave of Easter. Besides the Mass for that day, only a funeral Mass is permitted. However, paragraph 11 in the Introduction to the Rite of Marriage states that If marriage is celebrated on a solemnity, the Mass of the day is used with the nuptial blessing and, where appropriate, the special final blessing. When the wedding Mass may not be used, (which would be the case on April 1 and 2) one of the readings in Nos should be chosen. Therefore, if a wedding is to take place during the celebration of Mass on April 1 or 2, the Mass propers must be used for the Friday or Saturday within the Octave of Easter. The readings for the Friday or Saturday within the Octave of Easter must be used for this Mass (except for one which may be taken from the Rite of Marriage). The Rite of Marriage would then be inserted at the appropriate place during the Liturgy (after the homily). If a wedding ceremony is taking place outside Mass, the above does not apply. The Rite of Marriage Outside of Mass is permitted during the Octave of Easter.
