2008 Urban Sanitation Workshop: Integrating Sustainability into Urban Sanitation Systems King County Wastewater Treatment Division, Seattle, Washington State, United States Christie True, Division Director
Sustainable Solutions by Creating Resources from Wastewater Methane ENERGY Solids digester Highly treated water RECLAIMED WATER BIOSOLIDS
Sustainable Practice: Conserve & Recover Energy Large amounts of energy power the wastewater treatment system Average daily demand is 17 Megawatts Annual cost is ~ $9 million per year King County s plants produce enough digester gas equivalent to about 5 megawatts of electricity a year, enough to power 500 homes annually, and 5.3 million therms of natural gas produced is enough to heat more than 16,500 homes in a year Digester gas used to run boilers for heating, sewage pump engines, and cogeneration systems Some gas is scrubbed and sold to offset power costs Conserving and recovering energy helps the environment and saves money An employee at South Treatment Plant s co-generation system
Sustainable Practice: Capture Value in Biosolids
Biosolids Recycling Biosolids are a nutrient-rich marketable product Have been recycling biosolids for 30 years King County is national leader 45% to Dryland wheat 25% to canola & hops 25% to private and public forests 5% used to create GroCo compost
Why Customers Like Biosolids Increases soil organic matter (carbon) Improves soil tilth and structure Adds all nutrients needed by plants Stimulates growth and improves crop yields Improves soil water retention Reduces wind erosion of topsoil Source control (industrial & hazardous) ensure high quality biosolids
Sustainable Practice: Keep water in the Watershed by using reclaimed water Highly treated wastewater treatment plant effluent Useable for almost everything except drinking Meets strict state standards irrigation and industrial uses Golf courses Business parks Business parks Agriculture Heating and cooling Enhances wetlands quality and habitat Helps ensure reliable supply of water Keeps water in the watershed Reduces the amount of effluent discharged to Puget Sound
Sustainable Practice: Use of Membrane BioReactor (MBR) Technology in Wastewater systems Strands of hollow, tubular membranes are placed in biologically active effluent Membranes filter very fine solids from wastewater Replaces secondary clarifiers Investment in this technology means that our product meets Class A standards for water reuse Produces Class A reclaimed water to meet growing reuse demand Benefits Puget Sound through reduced annual pollutant load ( net environmental benefit ) MBR s smaller footprint reduces odor control requirements and utilizes less space on-site
Making Sustainable Technology Cost Effective: MBR & Blending During High Flow
Sustainable Technology: MBR & Blending Average Effluent Quality BOD, ppm TSS, ppm 5 0 MBR non-blended base flow MBR/CEPC blended event Conventional Secondary
Sustainable Technology: MBR & Blending Comparison of the Annual Discharge of BOD and TSS for Conventional Activated Sludge and MBR Split Stream Treatment Alternatives for Brightwater Treatment Plant at 38 MGD BOD/TSS Annual Discharge, lb/yr BOD 0 TSS MBR Average Year CAS
Sustainable Design & Construction: Brightwater Brightwater Treatment Plant will incorporate sustainable or green design and building practices in all facets of its construction and operation. Using green construction materials such as fly-ash concrete, and meeting high standards for recycling construction material waste. Using excavated soil in hills onsite to significantly reduce truck trips (reducing traffic impacts, fuel consumption and greenhouse gases) Native landscape planting continued
Sustainable Design & Construction: Brightwater Reducing imperious surface Natural storm water treatment through wetlands continued
Sustainable Design & Construction: Brightwater continued Construction stormwater management that uses large sprinklers in north habitat area to provide infiltration for the stormwater runoff from the entire construction area located to the south Remodel of pre-existing buildings and high standards for recycled building materials
Sustainable Design & Construction: Brightwater Environmental Education Center next to treatment plant that will include: Natural ventilation and lighting recycled materials Radiant floor heating that uses waste heat from the treatment plant processes Low-flow toilets that use reclaimed water green roofs Place to educate students & general public about wastewater treatment & sustainability
Questions? King County Wastewater Treatment Division, Seattle, Washington State, United States Christie True, Division Director
