1 Role : Lead Practitioner for Literacy (LP Pay Scale L1-18, 38,598-58,096 negotiable depending on experience) Person Specification The successful applicant will be passionate about developing learning and teaching within this important and specialised area, prepared to go the extra mile and have previous leadership experience. They will be focused on the improvement in standards of pedagogy and supporting other staff to develop. They will be focused on the attainment of all pupils, have proven success at teaching across all abilities, and hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Knowledge and Skills Required for the Post Qualified Teacher Status. Establish and evidence practice as an outstanding teacher over 4 or more years. Evidence of high achievement in teaching across the Key Stages. Working effectively as a middle manager or currently leading a key responsibility / development within a team. Evidence of a commitment to own professional development. Proven ability to raise standards in classrooms other than their own. Experience of leading teaching and learning initiatives beyond their own classroom, including an excellent understanding of the components which comprise outstanding learning and teaching. Experience of giving effective feedback to colleagues about professional performance. Use of assessment and attainment information to improve practice and raise standards. Vision for the developments of strategies to improve learning and teaching. Awareness of the latest developments and initiatives in education. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. The ability to lead and foster positive professional relationships and work effectively with teaching staff of varying experience. Developing high quality learning strategies and monitoring learner progress to raise attainment. Experience of contributing to the professional development /mentoring of colleagues. Effective use of assessment for learning to engage learners as partners in their learning. Ability to establish curriculum development, assessment, coordination and coaching. Ability to plan and resource effective interventions to meet curricular objectives. Key Duties and Responsibilities 1. Strategic direction and development of literacy a) Contribute to whole school policy-making and strategic planning as required by the Executive Principal. b) Prepare, monitor and update annual literacy plans in consultation with colleagues. c) Take the lead in ensuring that school policies and strategies are embedded in plans. d) Encourage students of all abilities to make contributions to developing their literacy skills. 2. Leadership & management of others

2 a) Lead and manage literacy, motivating and appraising colleagues to ensure that they have clear expectations of their roles, establish positive relationships with pupils and staff and ensure that high performance standards are achieved and maintained. b) Empower members of the literacy team to develop their leadership potential to ensure continuous improvement. c) Chair team meetings to ensure that they are used effectively. d) Lead the literacy development plan in line with the school vision and objectives as outlined in the School Development Plan. e) Oversee the effective liaison with all the feeder Primary Schools and school faculties to ensure the effective delivery of literacy across all stages of the curriculum and the provision of extracurricular and enrichment activities. 3. To lead literacy across the trust a) To run focus groups within the school and to increase the literacy outcomes for these groups. b) To encourage students from all backgrounds and abilities to participate in literacy activities and opportunities across a wide range of contexts. c) To promote, and to deliver, literacy competitions across the school. d) To spend a proportion of the week with feeder schools working on literacy projects to encourage development of key skills. 4. Extra-curricular activities a) Actively promote interest in literacy outside the immediate physical and timetabled confines of departments. b) Contribute to the broader life of the school by supporting and leading curricular and extra-curricular events. c) Oversee the organisation of literacy activities throughout the school, including enrichment, thematic events, support and summer schools. d) Co-ordinate arrangements for literacy opportunities at all levels, including. 5. Marketing and external links, including public occasions a) Actively promote literacy within the school community to encourage students interest in the focus area. b) Contribute to the positive promotion and marketing of the school in the local and wider community. c) Lead the literacy team s contribution to marketing events and external links. 6. Management of resources a) Work with other members of the department to use the accommodation to create a stimulating learning environment. b) Identify future resourcing needs and aspirations for literacy for consideration in the school s budget planning process. 7. Training & development of self and others

3 a) As a lead professional, set personal targets and take responsibility for own continuous professional development. b) Be proactive in identifying training needs across the team and school, ensuring that they are appropriately met, and that all colleagues are active in their own personal and continuous professional development. 8. General requirements a) To undertake all roles and responsibilities expected of a classroom teacher b) To work towards and support the school vision and the current school objectives outlined in the School Development Plan. c) Be an integral member of the pastoral system. d) Support and contribute to the school s responsibility for safeguarding students. e) Work within the school s health and safety policy to ensure a safe working environment for staff, pupils and visitors f) Work within the school s policy to promote equality of opportunity for all students and staff, both current and prospective. g) Maintain high professional standards of attendance, punctuality, appearance, conduct and positive, courteous relations with pupils, parents and colleagues. h) Engage actively in the appraisal (performance review) process. i) Adhere to school policies j) Undertake other reasonable duties related to the job purpose required from time to time.
