2 Dear Fundraiser, Welcome! Your commitment to The Canadian Women s Foundation s campaign to end violence is also a commitment to Canadian women and children, and we thank you for your dedication and support. Community fundraisers, like you, have been instrumental in our ability to raise support for and awareness of the issues facing women in Canada. Through localized support from hundreds of participants across the country, we can continuing to work closely with grassroots organizations and diverse communities, to listen to the voices if those who are impacted by this issues and provide financial support for the best solutions that serve women and children impacted by violence. Through your support to the 2016 GEN1 Campaign to End Violence, you are helping us raise both awareness and funds to support emergency women s shelters to meet the immediate need of women and their children escaping violence, and educational programs that teach the next generation about maintaining healthy relationships to stop the cycle before it starts. The Canadian Women s Foundation has put together a toolkit full of checklists, templates, and materials to help you out. Within this toolkit, you ll find a few documents to get you started. 3 THE CANADIAN WOMEN S FOUNDATION S CAMPAIGN TO END VIOLENCE The Canadian Women s Foundation is Canada s foundation for women and girls. We are a leading voice for women in Canada. Violence against women is a leading cause of injury to women and costs the Canadian health care system $1.5B each year support for abused women and their children when they leave a shelter is vital to their long-term health and wellness. We raise money to end violence against women, move women out of poverty and build strong resilient girls through funding, researching and promoting best practices. Our annual month-long Campaign to End Violence in May raises funds to support 450 emergency shelters in Canada for abused women and their children, and violence prevention programs. A DEMONSTRATED NEED IN CANADA 67% of Canadians personally know a woman who has been physically or sexually abused. On average, every six days a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner. Up to 362,000 children are exposed to domestic violence each year. On any given day in Canada, more than 3,300 women and 3,000 children are living in an emergency shelter to escape violence. EVENT OVERVIEW WHAT: WHEN & WHERE: Move for GEN1 is an energizing one-hour workout led by a professional instructor for all fitness levels to raise funds for the Canadian Women s Foundation s Campaign to End Violence. TORONTO: Saturday, May 28 th, 2016 at 11:00am-12:00pm (local time) TD Centre North Courtyard 77 King Street West CALGARY: Thursday, June 9, 2016 at 12pm 1pm Stephan Avenue Walk 100 Centre Street WHO: WHY: Great team-building for Corporate/community teams and individuals! Funds raised support more than 450 shelters for abused women and violence prevention programs that help break the cycle of violence. 3

4 Getting Started Top 3 things to do after you register for Move for GEN1 1. Set up a Personal Fundraising Page Every participant has access to a customizable webpage where supporters can make donations. Team Captains can customize a webpage for the entire team. Create and personalize this page add your story, photos and videos; the more information, the better. This is a chance for you to share your reasons for getting involved with MOVE FOR GEN1 and make your case for support to potential donors. Remember People Give to People. Donors will respond to your story. Donations are much higher when participants share a personal story and photos. 2. Set a Fundraising Goal Aim high: Strive to surpass the suggested $250 fundraising minimum. Set an ambitious goal for yourself and make it public by including it on your Personal Fundraising Page. Once your donors know how much you are trying to raise, they will want to help you reach your goal. Don t forget, if you raise $250, you are eligible for some great Incentive Prizes. 3. Reach Out to Your Network Upload contacts to the Personal Donation Centre and then use the templates provided to start sending s asking for donations. You will be surprised by how many people will donate if you just ask. How to reach your fundraising goal: Make a list of people you can ask for donations if you have participated in a charity event in the past, ask your previous supporters first. Ask everyone you know. Ask in different ways - through social media, , phone and in person. Look at how easy it can be to reach $ Make a pledge on your own behalf = $30 2. Ask a spouse or partner for support = $25 3. Ask 3 neighbours for $5 each = $15 4. Ask 3 relatives for $20 each = $60 5. Ask 3 friends for $20 each = $60 6. Ask 3 co-workers for $20 each = $60 4

5 A sample script is very helpful when approaching donors, to ensure you are comfortable making the ask. A sample script could look like this: I m participating in MOVE FOR GEN1, a one-hour workout to raise funds for the Canadian Women s Foundation. The event will take place on Saturday, May 28 at TD Centre North Courtyard. I ve set a goal to raise $### and I m hoping you might be able to support me with a contribution of $##. The money raised will support emergency shelters for women who have experienced abuse and violence prevention programs that stop the violence for good. I feel passionate about the cause and hope you will support me. Thank your donors. Make sure you send a timely thank-you note to everyone who supports you (template thank-you s are available in the Participant Centre). Follow up. If you haven t received a response from someone you ve asked for a donation, be sure to follow up with them. Make a phone call or send a quick note to make sure they haven t forgotten about your request. Keep your supporters up-to-date. Make sure that you are updating your Personal Fundraising Page so that your supporters know how you are doing. Find out if your company participates in a Corporate Matching Program. This is a great way to potentially double your donations. Connect with other MOVE FOR GEN1 participants. Sharing your experiences can help you stay motivated. Get Your Friends and Family Involved: Hold a clothing sale have friends sell their unwanted clothes to each other; donate the proceeds to your MOVE FOR GEN1 campaign. Ask your friends/family/donors to spread the word and ask their networks to support you too. Host a dinner with friends, talk about the importance of Canadian Women s Foundation, and ask them to support your efforts. Invite your friends and family to join your team. Once you have created a team on the Move for GEN1 website, invite your friends and family to join you. Stir up some friendly competition by challenging each other to see who can raise the most money! Tell your friends at the gym, your running club, or sports team about MOVE FOR GEN1, why it s important to you, and how they can get involved. Put up a MOVE FOR GEN1 poster to generate excitement about the event. Hold a garage sale and ask your team members to donate items to be sold. Ask your friends to contribute by making a donation instead of purchasing a gift for your birthday, anniversary or any occasion. 5

6 Get Your Company Involved: Matched giving Some companies offer to match any donations employees make, check to see if your company will do this. Collection Tins - nominate a couple of people who are responsible for encouraging donations at each fundraising activity. Set a company fundraising target for everyone to reach together so you can countdown to your goal. Have a fine box donations have to be made for being the last person in from each department every morning, being late or mobiles ringing in meetings. Hold a non-uniform, dare to wear or dress down day each month. Dine with a difference - Everyone bring in a main or dessert one lunch time and share a buffet together as a team, donating your usual lunch money to the Foundation. Put together an auction of promises promise to make tea for a week, come in to work 30 minutes earlier. Early bird breakfast - come in early with some pastries and ask for donations. Hold a cake bake, coffee morning or afternoon tea party. Final Thoughts - Make it Personal: Donate to yourself to show your support for Canadian Women s Foundation. Start fundraising early; make sure you give yourself, your team, and your donors enough time to reach your fundraising goal! Read about our work so you can respond to questions your donors may have. your other contacts in groups colleagues, running club, friends overseas, etc - personalising your message each time. Ask, ask, and ask again! It takes more than one round of s to reach your target. Many people mean to donate, but sometimes they don't quite get round to it on the first request. Don t forget to thank those who have already supported you, and to ask them to send your page to their contacts. Most important of all be positive, stay motivated and have fun raising money. 6
