2 Background 1. Follows on from the co-operative agreements between JAXA and ESA on data sharing in the XMM-Newton and Suzaku 2. To leverage the contributions from Netherlands Swiss, and French institutes and member state funding, it was agreed to provide supplemental ESA Science Directorate funding of ~10Meuro 3. In return there will be a reserved portion of Guest Observer time for European users, to be administered through an ESA AO. 4. The ESA contribution includes hardware items from European industry that have performance features that leverage the instrument and spacecraft procurement 5. ESA will help with cross-calibration to XMM-Newton and Integral 6. 3 Hardware items 1. Platinum for the hard X- ray telescopes multilayer deposition: High purity blocks purchased & transported to Japan 2. 4 Hardware Items 1. In order to ensure optimum heat rejection for the SXS cryogenics, and some advantages such as flexibility in arrangement of components and adaptability for long-distance transportation of large heat loads, the use of Loop Heat Pipes especially facilitates ground testing 2. 7 SSC Tasks 1. User Documentation review and comment; specific documents for European users, if necessary 2. Calibration Analysis review requirements; support calibration campaigns on ground and in flight; contribute to calibration files. Support cross-calibration with other missions, especially XMM-Newton & INTEGRAL 3. Software Testing Analyse test data; end-user beta-testing; test reports for ESA 4. AO Support Technical support to proposers and OTAC 5. Help Desk User support via ESA Helpdesk on instrumental and software questions 6. Data Analysis Workshops 7. 8 User Support Status 1. Contract with ISDC for SSC in preparation. ISDC proposal to ESA evaluated on 22 June. Should start in August. SSC has begun work already, with national contribution. 2. Vacancy Notice for resident scientist in Japan has been set up, still to be formally issued. Expected to start ~1 year before launch. 3.
