1 Session 1: Uses of water Abstract: This session will help the students of class 3 to learn the different ways water is used in our day to day life. The session adds fun to the learning as it makes use of a concept map and board game to learn the different uses of water. Objective: To list the different uses of water in everyday life. Duration: Two periods of 40 minutes each. Support Material For step 2 of this session, the following materials must be kept ready: (i) Worksheet 1: Four sets of game boards (A-D). Each board should have 4 pictures showing 4 different ways how water is used. (ii) Worksheet 2: will have picture cards, 8 in number (the same pictures as in worksheet 1 showing the different ways water is used). Preparation: Cut out the game boards. Copy and cut out two sets of 8 picture cards per group of 4 from worksheet 2. Steps Step 1: To assess the prior knowledge of the child Brainstorming Session (20mins) The teacher can ask the students the following question to bring out the importance of water. Where did most of the Early Civilizations (Indus Valley, Egyptian Civilization etc.) flourish? Why do you think most of the early civilizations flourished near the river valleys? Initiate the discussion on how the river water was utilized by the people. Example: most early civilizations developed around fresh water, which was essential for consumption, agriculture, commerce, transport, defense and other uses.

2 The teacher collates the answers on the blackboard. Step 2: Use of water in daily life 20 minutes The teacher will ask the students how they use water in their everyday life, at home as well as in school. The teacher collates all their answers and sums up the activity (in the form of a concept map) by stating the different ways water is used by us in everyday life at home and in school. cooking Cleaning utensils / floors Washing clothes Uses of water Bathing ourselves & animals Drinking Watering plants or gardening Assessment/ Recapitulation 40 minutes To reinforce the learning on the uses of water in our daily life, the teacher can involve the students in a game. Procedure: Divide the class into groups. Each group will have 4 members. Distribute the game boards (A-D) to each group. Each player in the group should get one game board cut out from worksheet 1.

3 Cut the picture cards from worksheet 2 and place the pile of loose picture cards face down, in the centre of each group. (2 copies of picture cards are best between four players). The first player picks up a picture card and others have to find out if it is one of their pictures on the game-board by asking a question such as Is she / he washing the clothes? Players take turns to question until the person holding the picture says yes. When the player with the picture answers yes, the player who asked the right question wins the card and puts it on his/her board. The winner then picks the next picture from the pile and the group members take turns in guessing the picture. The game continues till one of the member in the group, completes matching all the pictures on his / her game-board. Reference Material Worksheet 1 and 2 the idea taken from (
