Introduction This booklet has details about the care which you will receive from staff and the services which the hospital provides. During your stay with us, our primary concern will be your comfort and return to good health. If you have any questions or concerns, our staff will be pleased to assist you in any way they can. Visitors Visitors are welcome to visit between the hours of 1pm to 5pm and 6pm to 9pm, but you may want to ask them to avoid arriving during your evening meal. Children are welcome to visit if they have an adult with them. If your visitors have an infection, cold, vomiting or diarrhoea ask them to get in touch with the ward staff before they arrive. Admissions The booking office staff will make admission plans with you and will make this as easy as possible. You may have been asked some personal details before you arrive which we may need to ask you again at admission. These may include contact numbers, your GP s name, address and telephone number and other relevant information. If at any time during your pre-operative assessment or any other medical assessments you would like to be chaperoned then please tell a member of nursing staff. Personal items Please bring nightwear, dressing gown, slippers and toiletries. Towels are provided in the ward. Breast enlargement 3

Valuables We do not take responsibility for the loss or damage of your valuables or personal items during your stay. Please leave valuables at home or ask whoever is accompanying you to take responsibility for them. If you must bring money or valuables into the hospital please ask the nurse if she can store them for you. Electrical appliances We allow small electrical appliances in patient rooms although; engineering staff must check these before you use them. If you need a hairdryer please ask nursing staff. Be aware these may be in use by other patients. Outgoing telephone calls Public telephone facilities are located: beside the lifts at 3 East beside the lifts at 2 East opposite conservatory, ground floor in the main hotel foyer Medication Please bring your medication in with you, the nurse will store this until your discharge when it will be returned to you. Infection control Patients who come into hospital have a greater risk of picking up infection because any kind of treatment can make them less resistant for a short period of time. Please ask your visitors to use the hand hygiene stations before entering your room and avoid sitting on your bed. The following points should help reduce the risk to you: 4 Breast enlargement

You should avoid touching wounds and any dressings or drips that have been used as part of your care. Good basic hygiene is also important. Members of staff who need to touch your skin should wash their hands before and after examination (using soap and water or hand gel). All our rules demand this essential procedure, and we would welcome you to question members of staff if you would like them to confirm that they have washed their hands. It is not possible to avoid infection completely but the staff at the Golden Jubilee Hospital work hard to reduce the risks with your help. Data protection We ask for information about you so that you can receive proper care and treatment. We keep this information, together with details of your care, because it may be needed if we see you again. We may use some of this information for other reasons: for example, to help us protect the health of the public generally and to see that the NHS runs efficiently, plans for the future, trains its staff, pays its bills and can account for its actions. Your information is treated confidentially at all times and is only seen by those who need to know. Sometimes we will share your information with others involved in your care to ensure continuation of your treatment. This may include your local social work department who are responsible for providing any equipment you will need for returning home. Like everyone working for the NHS they have a legal duty to keep information about you confidential. You have a right to see what has been written in your health records; details of how to go about accessing your records and how we use your information are available from the hospital. Breast enlargement 5

Pastoral services Chaplains from the main religious denominations can visit you on request. Please ask a member of staff if you would like this to be arranged. Shopping facilities You can buy newspapers, magazines, phone cards, toiletries and gifts from the shop on the ground floor next to the West Lifts. Open from: 8am 7pm (Monday Friday) 9am 2pm (Saturday and Sunday) Shop staff visit wards between am and pm with a selection of items from the shop. Housekeeping Our Hospital rooms are cleaned daily. This is checked by ward staff and the Housekeeping Supervisor. The Senior Infection Control manager runs the housekeeping service. Breast enlargement (augmentation) This is an operation to enlarge your breasts by putting an artificial implant either under your breast tissue, or under your chest muscle behind your breast. Implants are made of an outer layer of firm silicone, and are usually filled with silicone gel or salt water. 6 Breast enlargement

Pre assessment clinic You will be asked to attend for pre assessment to ensure that you are fit for the surgery and anaesthetic. This will be here at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital or perhaps your own local hospital. Please bring along any tablets you are currently taking. You may be asked to provide a urine sample and a sample of blood will be taken. Surgery: usually require a one night stay and is done under a general anaesthetic, the surgeon would have discussed where your scars will be depending on the type of enlargement you are having done. Your surgeon will discuss the size and shape of implant that will be suitable to you. You should discuss breastfeeding with your surgeon. Breast implants can interfere with mammography, if you are going for screening you should tell your radiographer or nurse that you have implants. You will be sent out your fasting instructions and admission times by letter prior to your surgery date. The surgeon will visit you on the morning of surgery to discuss the operation, mark the site with a pen and ask you to sign the consent form for surgery, this confirms that you understand the risks and benefits and gives your permission for the procedure to go ahead, you may also be asked to consent for photographs. Procedure: Can take between one and two hours. The nurse will prepare you for theatre and walk you to the theatre department. If you have been given a sedative you will be taken on a trolley to the theatre. Recovery: You will have to rest until the effects of the anaesthetic have worn off. You will be given painkillers to help relive any discomfort. You may have a drain in each breast to allow blood and fluid to drain away from the surgery site. You may have a drip in your arm to keep you hydrated, it is usually removed when you are able to drink enough fluid. Breast enlargement 7

The wounds may be covered with a dressing and you should bring in with you a good fitting support bra with no underwires. You should be able to mobilise to the toilet with the nurse in the evening unless your surgery was carried out much later in the afternoon. If you have drains these will be removed the next morning unless they are still draining in which case they will be monitored and removed when the drainage stops or is very little. Some wounds will take longer to heal and dressings may be needed for a few weeks, you will be given an appointment to return for a wound check in one week, stitches are usually dissolving so there are no stitches to be removed. You will be given advice by the nursing staff on how to move so you do not put any strain on the wounds, you will experience some tightness around the wounds and some patients experience tingling around the nipples this is normal, you should continue to wear the support bra for four to six weeks and sometimes longer the surgeon will advise. Side effects: Bruising, this can be painful and take a month or so to clear. Swelling, this may not completely settle for a few months. Scarring, this usually fades over the course of a year, but won t completely disappear. 8 Breast enlargement

Discharge advice Rest this evening and avoid strenuous activities. You must not in the next 24 hours: Drive Drink alcohol Use machinery Take your usual medications and any that you may have been given by the nurse today. It is normal to feel some pain after surgery. You will be prescribed and given regular painkillers during your stay in hospital. On discharge from hospital you will be given painkillers to take home. Other advice If a follow up appointment is required, you will be advised of this on discharge. Contact the hospital immediately after discharge for any advice. Contact your GP if: You have severe pain not relieved by medication You have excess bleeding from the wound site You have extreme redness or swelling around the wound site or drainage of pus You are unable to pass urine You have continual vomiting You have a fever In the event of an emergency, you should go to your nearest Accident and Emergency. Breast enlargement 9

Specific advice for discharge Mobility You will feel tired for the first few days following discharge from hospital. Rest for some of the time, but gradually increase your mobilisation until you feel fit to resume normal activities. This will take a few weeks. You should not go to your bed as if you were ill. Avoid heavy lifting for six weeks following surgery. It is advisable to wear your support stockings during the day until your mobility has increased to near normal levels. Wounds You will be given specific wound instructions by your surgeon and nurse as to when you can shower or bathe, keep wounds dry unless instructed that it is safe to get them wet. i.e waterproof dressings. Driving Your GP or surgeon will advise at your follow up appointment when you can start to drive again. You should also check with your car insurance company. Pain relief Continue to take the painkillers given to you on discharge. Returning to work You will normally need six weeks off work depending on how well you recover from your surgery and on what job you do. You may require longer if you carry out heavy physical work. If you have any problems or questions, contact Ward 3 East by calling and asking for extension 5282 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm). Outside of these hours, please call and ask for the Senior Charge Nurse. 10 Breast enlargement
