Experiencing Organizational Behavior. 3 rd. edition. (available only King St. book store). Course Prerequisites: Junior standing. (60 hours). Course Description: This course approaches management as that process of reaching organizational goals by working with and through people and other resources. Organizations are treated as dynamic entities affected by individual and group behavior as well as structural and environmental factors. International as well as domestic situations are examined. Course Objectives: 1. To understand management and organizational behavior (OB) concepts associated with continuous improvement in individual, group, and organizational processes in our global environment. Specific attention will be given to: history of field, problem solving/decision making processes, international context of OB, managing diversity & individual differences, motivation, learning styles, group/team decision-making and development, organizational processes & benchmarking, leadership, communication, and managing conflict and change. 2. To be able to utilize these concepts to solve practical problems in private, public, not-for profit, and social organizations. This will be aided by case analysis; each student is expected to analyze "real world situations" through the use of the five-step problem solving (or decision-making) process while insuring that alternative solutions generated for each case consider the ethical dimension as part of its feasibility.

To enhance self-management knowledge, skills, and abilities through the completion of a professionally developed resume/vita that is targeted to a career development goal selected by each student. These processes will encourage the application of management and OB concepts to the individual student s goals and objectives. 4. To enhance writing, interpersonal, presentation and critical thinking skills through the aforementioned objectives, examinations that require analysis as well as synthesis and/or critical thinking, in-class experiential exercises, self-analysis assignments and class participation. School of Business Learning Goals This course addresses the School of Business learning goals as follows: Communication Skills: Students will demonstrate the ability, via both written and spoken word, to effectively present, critique, and defend ideas in a cogent, persuasive manner. (Addressed via written assignments and an oral presentation.) Quantitative Fluency: Students will demonstrate competency in logical reasoning and data analysis skills. (Addressed via case analysis.) Global and Civic Responsibility: Students will be able to identify and define social, ethical, environmental and economic challenges at local, national and international levels. Students will also be able to integrate knowledge and skills in addressing these issues. (Addressed via in-class dialogue regarding social and ethical dilemmas common to the 21st century workplace.) Intellectual Innovation & Creativity: Students will be able to demonstrate their resourcefulness and originality in addressing extemporaneous problems. (Addressed via the critical analysis of OB issues in the media.) Synthesis: Students will be able to integrate knowledge from multiple disciplines incorporating learning from both classroom and non-classroom settings in the completion of complex and comprehensive tasks. (Addressed via comprehensive quizzes and individual insights paper.) Grading: Your learning will be assessed in a number of ways including quizzes, a reflection paper, and tests. Tests: There will be two on-line tests during the semester one on October 10 th and the second one on November 30 th. These tests will come from the textbook and from the in-class lectures/discussions. They will each be made up of 50 questions. The tests will be timed. You will have 50 minutes to complete each test. Please advise me if you have a requirement for more time because of a documented disability. Each test will be worth 20% of your grade. Pre-Quizzes: There will be 10 open-book quizzes that will be done on-line in Oaks. These are each scheduled to be completed by you no later than the Sunday night at midnight prior to the date listed in the syllabus. Notice for example that Pre-Quiz #1 is scheduled to be completed no-later-than August 30. The date listed in the syllabus is 8/31 which is the Monday

3 of the start of that week. The Pre-Quiz is due by Sunday before that week These are open book quizzes, but you only get one attempt at each question. The average of all 10 of these quizzes will be your final score and that score will be worth 30% of your grade. Individual Insights Paper: You will write a 3 page paper at the end of the semester. Appendix A details the requirements for that paper. This paper will make up 30% of your grade. Attendance Policy: You are expected to attend class unless there is an exceptional excuse for the absence or unless you have an official excuse from the campus health services. Two (2) absences are allowed for such exceptional purpose(s). It is not necessary to explain the reason for any class(es) missed because it is automatically assumed that it is for a valid, legitimate reason. This policy includes class sessions from the first day of the semester. If, and once, you miss 2 allowed absences, you will receive a notice from the Professor that you have missed 2 classes and each further absence will result in a reduction in grade. Late arrival for class will be counted as an absence. Each class beyond 2 classes missed will result in a one grade reduction in your final grade. For example, if you achieve a final grade of A and have missed 3 classes, you will receive an A-; if you have missed 4 classes you will receive a B+, and so on. If you miss 5 classes you will receive a final grade of F. This policy is non-negotiable. Honor Code: Lying, cheating, attempted cheating, and plagiarism are violations of our Honor Code that, when identified, are investigated. Each incident will be examined to determine the degree of deception involved. Incidents where the instructor determines the student s actions are related more to a misunderstanding will handled by the instructor. A written intervention designed to help prevent the student from repeating the error will be given to the student. The intervention, submitted by form and signed by both the instructor and the student, will be forwarded to the Dean of Students and placed in the student s file. Cases of suspected academic dishonesty will be reported directly by the instructor and/or others having knowledge of the incident to the Dean of Students. A student found responsible by the Honor Board for academic dishonesty will receive a XF in the course, indicating failure of the course due to academic dishonesty. This grade will appear on the student s transcript for two years after which the student may petition for the X to be expunged. The student may also be placed on disciplinary probation, suspended (temporary removal) or expelled (permanent removal) from the College by the Honor Board. Students should be aware that unauthorized collaboration--working together without permission- - is a form of cheating. Unless the instructor specifies that students can work together on an assignment, quiz and/or test, no collaboration during the completion of the assignment is permitted. Other forms of cheating include possessing or using an unauthorized study aid (which could include accessing information stored on a cell phone), copying from others exams, fabricating data, and giving unauthorized assistance.

4 Research conducted and/or papers written for other classes cannot be used in whole or in part for any assignment in this class without obtaining prior permission from the instructor. 5 APPENDIX A Individual Insights Paper You will write three single-spaced, typed with 12 pt. type, no more than 3-page executive summaries detailing three different personal insights from your team experiences in the in-class group exercises. Select experiences that were significant for you, in which you gained new awareness about yourself and/or others. Select one experience from exercises 1 13, one from exercises 14 21, and one from exercises Address the following statements and questions: A. Concrete Experience 1. Objectively describe the experience (who, what, when, where, how) 2. Subjectively describe your feelings, perceptions, and thoughts that occurred during (not after) the experience. What did others seem to be feeling? B. Reflective Observation 1. Looking back at the experience, what were the perspectives of the key actors (including you)? 2. Why did the people involved (including you) behave as they did? C. Abstract Conceptualization Relate concepts or theories from the assigned readings or class lectures to your experience. Explain thoroughly how they help describe your experience. Please apply at least one concept or theory and cite it appropriately. D. Active Experimentation 1. What did you learn about yourself? 2. What action steps will you take to be more effective in the future (or sustain your effectiveness)? 3.What new behavior or mental processing did you attempt during the exercise, and what did you learn from it?
