(Average Hours per Week: 50) Dissertation: Ecology of Red Snapper, Lutjanus campechanus, in the western Gulf of Mexico: comparisons among artificial and natural habitats Advisor: Dr. Greg Stunz, Endowed Chair for Fisheries and Ocean Health, Director of the Center of Sportfish Science and Conservation Conducted research comparing Red Snapper ecology among artificial and natural habitats in the western Gulf of Mexico to provide new information for artificial reef development, fisheries management, and the stock assessment process. Compared fish assemblages and abundances from natural and artificial reefs using remotely operated vehicle (ROV) surveys. Performed vertical line and small fish trap surveys to assess populations of reef fish inhabiting artificial reefs, standing oil and gas platforms, and natural banks in the region. Collected life-history information on Red Snapper including biological measurements, diet, reproduction, age, and growth. Evaluated the performance of new artificial reefs as fish habitat relative to nearby natural habitats. Estimated the selectivity and biases associated with gears directed at sampling Red Snapper. Assessed Red Snapper residence at offshore habitats using acoustic telemetry. Prepared and reviewed animal use protocols. Operated and maintained a 36 ft research vessel and performed resource surveys in the offshore environment. Completed training and certification in SCUBA to assist with fish community surveys and acoustic receiver deployments. Operated a micro-rov for fish community studies. Assisted Texas Parks and Wildlife Department s Artificial Reef Program with artificial reef monitoring trips in the Gulf of Mexico. Performed data analysis using software including PRIMER, R, SAS, ArcMap GIS, Access, and Excel. Helped prepare written reports and presentations pertaining to resource survey data. Disseminated and communicated research findings to the public,

Professional Experience: September 2012 May 2013 Graduate Teaching Assistant, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Corpus Christi, TX. (Average Hours per Week: 20) Responsible for teaching the two lab sections of Biology I and one lab section of Biology II (fall semester; ~25 students each) and one section of Professional Skills (spring semester; ~25 students), a class developed to introduce undergraduate science majors to professional skills of practicing scientists. Delivered information to students in formal Powerpoint presentations and hands-on demonstrations. Lectures in Professional Skills focused on scientific writing, literature searches, literature reviews, résumé and CV development, and communication of scientific information through oral/visual presentations. Coordinated and scheduled two guest speaker presentations. Athens, GA and Richmond Hill, GA (Average Hours per Week: 50) Developed research protocols to investigate the residence, habitat use, and movements of Atlantic Tripletail in the Ossabaw Sound Estuary in coastal Georgia. Worked closely with GA Department of Natural Resources Coastal Resources Division (GADNR CRD) Biologist Chris Kalinowsky to provide previously unknown life-history information on Tripletail residing in GA coastal waters for management purposes. Captured Tripletail with hook-and-line and safely handled, measured, and tagged Tripletail with acoustic transmitters. Developed and maintained an array of passive acoustic receivers for monitoring estuary-scale movements, and residence and habitat use of tagged Tripletail. Performed active tracking of tagged Tripletail to monitor intertidal movements and site fidelity using an acoustic receiver, hydrophone, and GPS. Entered all fish, detection, environmental, and receiver data in Excel and developed a searchable Access database. Participated in meetings with the Florida Acoustic Cooperative Telemetry (FACT) group. Operated and maintained a small research vessel (20 ft) and trailer. Supervised and managed a research technician assisting with Tripletail research. Performed neuston plankton tows to assess the presence of Tripletail larvae in the Ossabaw Sound Estuary.
3 Streich - 3 Analyzed tripletail detection and movement data using Excel, ArcMap GIS software, and SAS. Assisted GADNR CRD with gill-net resource surveys for juvenile Gag and Redfish. Successfully published research from my undergraduate thesis on the identification of a putative Bull Shark nursery in GA. Disseminated research findings through oral presentations with the public, managers, and scientists at state and regional conferences and meetings. (Average Hours per Week: 15) Responsible for teaching the lab portion of Fisheries Management, a class for graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Georgia. Working with the lab coordinator and my graduate advisor, Dr. Doug Peterson, planned and coordinated labs and field trips for approximately 20 students. Educated and taught students about various methods and types of sampling gear for monitoring and management of fish populations including boat and trailer safety, operation, and maintenance, backpack and boat electrofishing, trawling, acoustic telemetry, habitat assessment, pond management, data management, gill-netting, and mark-recapture for population assessment. Presented lectures pertaining to fisheries management techniques using Powerpoint. Reviewed and graded exams, quizzes, and lab assignments for the class and ensured grades were delivered to supervisor in a timely manner. Received above average student evaluations. Completed training in CPR and First Aid. May 2009 August 2009 May 2008 August 2008 Fisheries Research Technician, Sturgeon Population Dynamics and Ecology Project, Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, University of Georgia. Darien, GA. (Average Hours per Week: 60) Assisted Mike Bednarski, a PhD student at the University of Georgia, with his research on federally listed Shortnose and Atlantic sturgeon on the Altamaha River in coastal Georgia. Performed extensive gill- and trammel net surveys for a large mark-recapture study of population size for the two species. Conducted drift-net surveys for adult Atlantic Sturgeon in the Altamaha Sound. Responsible for measuring captured individuals, checking for PIT tags, marking fish with a PIT tag if none was found, and taking a fin clip for genetic research into population mixing along the US Atlantic Coast. Trained in gastric lavage and performed gastric lavage on juvenile Atlantic and shortnose sturgeon for a study assessing the feeding ecology of the two species. Assisted with fish capture and transmitter implantation for an acoustic telemetry project assessing the habitat use of juvenile Atlantic Sturgeon. Tracked the juvenile sturgeon with an acoustic receiver and hydrophone to monitor weekly habitat use. Recorded and entered data in
4 Streich - 4 Excel. Other duties including radio-telemetry, gill-net, drift net, and trammel net repair. Trailered and operated a boat (16-24 ft) during day-to-day sampling trips. Performed boat, engine, and trailer maintenance when required. Gained valuable experience in fisheries research, acquired knowledge of sturgeon management measures implemented by NOAA and National Marine Fisheries Service, and developed professional and communication skills with my co-workers and supervisors.
