2 Living and working in Stockholm Royal Seaport he Stockholm Royal Seaport urban development project spans from Hjorthagen in the north, across the port area, and down to Loudden in the south. he plan is to build 12,000 new homes and 35,000 new workplaces in one of Stockholm s premier locations. In 2009, the Stockholm City Council decided that Stockholm Royal Seaport would have an environment profile, with the vision to establish a worldclass, sustainable urban district. Stockholm Royal Seaport embodies a cohesive approach to achieve overall sustainability. he ambitious sustainability targets for the area and the demands on property developers mean that the City s administrations, companies, developers and other stakeholders work closer together than usual. Processes that create conditions for participation, involvement and well-being, and systems and solutions to reduce environmental impact, are planned jointly. he development of this sustainable urban district ranges from the remediation of former industrial sites to the expansion of public transport, enhanced biodiversity and the provision of opportunities to reduce resource use by integrating ecocycle systems for water, waste and energy. Energy-efficient buildings and increased generation of renewable energy in the area, from such sources as solar power, are also key elements in the ambition to achieve a community free from fossil fuels. Climate-adapted and lush outdoor environment As a whole, the urban district will be able to cope with increased rainfall, a warmer climate and higher sea levels. he conditions for managing this are reflected in the physical design, which will also help to preserve and enhance greenery in the area. A system for stormwater management has been planned, in which water from the streets is collected and stored as a resource for watering trees. A Green Space Index will be developed on the basis of each area s natural conditions and guide the design of the outdoor environment. he objective is to reward greenery that serves several functions, such as enhancing biodiversity, being part of the stormwater system and mitigating the negative effects of climate change. he Green Space Index also comprises social aspects such as urban gardening, meeting places and informal recreation areas. An oak tree contributes to biodiversity, for example, but may also provide shade for children in a playground. Energy he energy used in buildings and facilities is to be used efficiently and wherever possible based on renewable sources in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Requirements stipulate, for example, that some of the energy used must be based on selfgenerated renewable energy that is produced by the actual building using such technology as solar cells. he long-term objective is to create buildings that generate more energy than they use. Ecocycle he overall objective for the urban district is to increase the proportion of ecocycle materials, such as plastic and metal. he area is equipped with a vacuum disposal system (VDS) for handling packaging, paper and residual waste. Waste disposal chutes are marked clearly to make it easier for people living and working in the area to place the right waste in the right place, and promote better sorting. Waste management will be further facilitated by providing source-separation amenities in all buildings, and a recycling centre has been planned. All kitchens include waste disposal units and the food waste collected is used for biogas production. Digestate is returned to agriculture. Sound materials and healthy indoor environment In Stockholm Royal Seaport, there is a major focus on minimising the environmental and health impacts of materials. he demands on documentation and the examination of chemical content go beyond statutory requirements. When a development solution is selected, the environmental impact throughout all life-cycle stages should be considered. Similarly, the costs for energy-intensive installations are to be measured over the entire lifecycle.

4 While many requirements are aimed at reducing the building s environmental impact, the creation of a high-quality indoor environment is also considered. hese requirements cover damp proofing, sound insulation, daylight and air quality. Environmentally efficient transport he design of an urban district will have a major impact on the travel patterns that are created within, as well as to and from the area. Walking, cycling and public transport have been prioritised in Stockholm Royal Seaport to enable sustainable travel and transport. Well-developed pedestrian and bike paths will make walking and cycling feel secure and effective. Public transport such as underground railway, buses, a tram line and commuter buses will be available as well for the opportunity to join carpools and bikesharing systems. he goal is that public transport will have dedicated lanes for accessibility. Space will be available for visitor parking and for carpool vehicles, including charging points. he number of parking spaces for residents will remain at a level corresponding to car ownership for the City, while the number of commercial parking spaces will be kept low. o reduce transport in the area during the development period, and thus the environmental impact, the City has established a consolidation centre for building materials in Ropsten to promote efficient traffic management. Living and working in the area he greatest source of greenhouse gas emissions is our daily consumption and living habits. Participation, involvement and the choices made by people living and working in the area will play a crucial role in how the area evolves. Everybody s knowledge and understanding of environmental issues is an important part of how much the total energy use, for example, will ultimately be. As a result, it should be easy for people who live or work in the area to see how resource use increases or decreases depending on their own behaviour. he City is creating an effective platform for anyone who wants to achieve a sustainable lifestyle. his includes building systems in the City that are as clear and user-friendly as possible, while also informing and engaging in dialogue with the people who live or work in the area to achieve an understanding of how every individual can make a difference to our total resource use. he area along Husarviken in Hjorthagen will be developed over a ten-year period. In the first few years, the number of residents will increase, while the urban district is also a construction site for subsequent phases. As with any type of major urban development, this means that not everything will be in place from the start. he aim is that residential and commercial services will be gradually established and developed.
