MCF MEMBER INSTITUTIONS ADRIAN COLLEGE ALBION COLLEGE ALMA COLLEGE ANDREWS UNIVERSITY AQUINAS COLLEGE CALVIN COLLEGE HILLSDALE COLLEGE HOPE COLLEGE KALAMAZOO COLLEGE MADONNA UNIVERSITY MARYGROVE COLLEGE OLIVET COLLEGE SIENA HEIGHTS UNIVERSITY SPRING ARBOR UNIVERSITY MICHIGAN COLLEGES FOUNDATION Founded in 1949, Michigan Colleges Foundation (MCF) works to strengthen the shared capacity of 14 leading independent, four-year colleges and universities grounded in a liberal arts tradition to recruit students, support them financially, and connect them to Michigan career opportunities. A Distinctive Brand of Education MCF members provide a high quality, values-guided education in the liberal arts and sciences tradition - in smaller, nurturing environments that encourage creativity, ethical values, critical thinking, global intelligence and civic engagement. While individually our campuses are smaller, collectively, MCF is the third largest university in the state. We boast 35,000 students, 1,500 faculty and more than 100 academic majors. As a group, MCF institutions have higher graduation rates than their public university counterparts and enroll a higher percentage of minority and low income students. Over 70% of our students are Michigan residents, and the majority remain in Michigan after graduation.
Supporting Students through Scholarships MCF has raised nearly $70 million in scholarship and operating support from business and individual donors who are passionate about our schools. Thanks to our investment partners, we ve been able to provide more than 5,000 scholarships to help students and families with the cost of a college education. Scholarship opportunities include: Michigan Scholarship Fund, Named Scholarships, Hometown Scholars, Innovation Scholars, and Liberty Scholarships. The Liberty Scholarship The enrollment of military veterans at MCF s independent colleges is on the rise - and for good reason. Our smaller campuses and more personalized education create an optimal environment for returning veterans to flourish. Because GI Bill benefits are based on state-supported tuition, veteran students often must fill the tuition shortfall of selecting a private college with their own resources. In response, MCF launched a special scholarship - The Liberty Scholarship - designed to support military veterans enrolled on MCF campuses and close the funding gap. 97% of MCF students receive some form of Financial Aid The scholarship I received, along with other financial aid, makes it possible for me to study engineering at Calvin College and I deeply appreciate your kindness. I am very thankful for this scholarship because it helps me attend a well-respected, independent college. - Charles DeVlieg Memorial Scholarship recipient
Inspiring Aspirations & College Readiness through Environmental Science The Third 90 Network provides opportunities for urban high school students to participate directly (alongside MCF college students and faculty) in hands-on field and lab work in environmental science. The program prepares students to enter and complete college by giving them a more realistic view of college-level work, cultivates interest in science and conservation, and introduces students to the brand of higher education available at MCF institutions. MCF has piloted the program with University Preparatory Academy High School in Detroit for two years with exceptional results. In spring 2012, the Network expanded to high schools in Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Three Rivers, and 5 MCF institutions, engaging nearly 50 high school students. Plans are in place to serve at least 10 high schools and 250 student participants annually by 2013.
Connecting Campus Leaders to Michigan The Van Andel Millennial Board, a 14-member student board, consisting of one presidentially-selected student from each MCF member, was created to engage students and their respective colleges and universities in MCF s Michigan talent strategy. By serving as a direct campus link to this work, the Millennial Board helps MCF develop and implement programs to attract and retain students in Michigan and to position MCF institutions in the transformation of the state s economic climate. Members serve as campus ambassadors and public faces for MCF, building broad excitement for the Think Michigan campaign. Follow them at Informing High School Counselors Every fall, MCF gathers high school guidance counselors, community college transfer advisors and home school counselors for the MCF Collective College Fair - Smaller Colleges, Big Opportunities. The fair creates greater awareness of the value, affordability, and educational and career opportunities at MCF institutions, enabling attendees to better advise students in the college selection process.
Marketing Michigan to Students The MCF Think Michigan campaign is a privately funded promotional campaign designed to help inform perceptions and create enthusiasm for the quality of life and career options available to soon-to-be MCF grads in Michigan s major cities. The approach primarily uses social media and signature events to introduce students to Michigan quality of life, top employers and successful, young alums. Research is a key component of the Think Michigan campaign. MCF s Keeping College Graduates in Michigan report is based on a survey of more than 4,000 MCF students on their career and lifestyle preferences, as well as their perceptions of Michigan s major cities. This study is used to inform the direction of our place and career marketing strategy.
Connecting Students to Careers The Corporate Concierge Connection is an exclusive, one-stop recruiting link to the more than 35,000 students at MCF s member colleges and universities. MCF Corporate Concierge partners receive customized access to a wide range of talented students and graduates through company- and industry- specific career fairs, exclusive resume and talent referral services, and special recruiting events. The Talent Assessment Project is a MCF research initiative designed to create an ongoing dialogue between Michigan s major employers and MCF campuses to identify the qualities and skills employers need in recent college graduates. More than 30 Michigan-based companies have participated. The study will be used to better align corporate Michigan talent needs with academic programs on MCF s 14 campuses, ensuring that future graduates are prepared with the skills, qualities, experiences and characteristics the state s businesses and organizations need.
