9 COMPETITION DESCRIPTIONS 9 Fall Nature Competitions October 30 th, 2016 & Spring Wildlife Competition March 20 th, 2017 Scope of Competition: For our Nature and Wildlife Competitions, CAPA has adopted the definitions established by the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP): DEFINITION OF NATURE PHOTOGRAPH Nature photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict all branches of natural history, except anthropology and archaeology, in such a fashion that a wellinformed person will be able to identify the subject material and certify its honest presentation. The story telling value of a photograph must be weighed more than the pictorial quality while maintaining high technical quality. Human elements shall not be present, except where those human elements are integral parts of the nature story such as nature subjects, like barn owls or storks, adapted to an environment modified by humans, or where those human elements are in situations depicting natural forces, like hurricanes or tidal waves. Scientific bands, scientific tags or radio collars on wild animals are permissible. Photographs of human created hybrid plants, cultivated plants, feral animals, domestic animals, or mounted specimens are ineligible, as is any form of manipulation that alters the truth of the photographic statement. Images used in Nature Photography competitions may be divided in two classes: Nature and Wildlife. DEFINITION OF WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY Images entered in Nature sections meeting the Nature Photography Definition above can have landscapes, geologic formations, weather phenomena, and extant organisms as the primary subject matter. This includes images taken with the subjects in controlled conditions, such as zoos, game farms, botanical gardens, aquariums and any enclosure where the subjects are totally dependent on man for food. Wildlife is not limited to animals, birds and insects. Marine subjects and botanical subjects (including fungi and algae) taken in the wild are suitable wildlife subjects, as are carcasses of extant species. 9 9
10 COMPETITION DESCRIPTIONS 10 Botany includes images that portray uncultivated plant life such as trees, flowering and nonflowering plants, ferns, algae, fungi, etc. in their natural habitat. Photographs of domestic plants, artificially produced hybrid plants, flower arrangements etc are ineligible. Entrants are required to identify their botany images on the entry form for Botany award consideration: place a B on the right side of the entry number to indicate the image is a Botany entry. e.g. JohnSmith-100B-Yellow wildflower.jpg. SUGGESTION: In addition to adding the B to the filename, the entrant may wish to the hosting club to alert them to this entry and avoid the possibility of the B identifier being missed. Check out our website ( for examples of Nature and Wildlife by using the Next Screen button to locate the winning images from the 2016 Wildlife Individual or Club Competitions and 2015 Nature Competition Individual or Club Competitions. To provide further clarity on differences and what qualifies as Nature and Wildlife, you are encouraged to check out the Australian Photographic Society Interpretations of FIAP Nature Definition here - Another good reference to review is the Nature/Wildlife Competitions Check List here - Editing Criteria Restricted Editing - According to the FIAP definition for Nature and Wildlife Competitions: No techniques that add, relocate, replace, or remove pictorial elements except by cropping are permitted. Techniques that enhance the presentation of the photograph without changing the nature story or the pictorial content, or without altering the content of the original scene, are permitted including HDR, focus stacking and dodging/burning. Techniques that remove elements added by the camera, such as dust spots, digital noise, and film scratches, are allowed. Stitched images are not permitted. All allowed adjustments must appear natural. Color images can be converted to grey-scale monochrome. Infrared images, either direct-captures or derivations, are not allowed

List monochrome prints first on the entry form, then colour. Monochrome and colour are judged separately. Put an M for Monochrome or C for Colour to the right of the entry number on the entry form to indicate the category entered. E.g. John Smith 1M Light & Shadow NOTE: Prints with an OVERALL tone or colour THROUGHOUT (i.e., sepia, selenium, copper or any other singular overall hue) are designated MONOCHROME. Monochrome means ONE COLOUR! Black and white prints that have been selectively coloured in a localized area are classified as COLOUR. This occurs, for example, when colouring just the canoe orange or only the barn red in a scene, leaving all else gray, black or white. 5. Login to the Online Competition system and upload a digital version of your print images. By doing so, the hosting camera club can down the images if they want to also project the images to the individuals viewing the competition and permitting the hosting club to use the downloaded Competition spreadsheet as well as have the images easily accessible to our Canada Camera magazine editor, CAPA Librarian and Director of Competitions. 6. Complete the appropriate entry form found on our CAPA Competition, Competitions Guideline & Online Entry Instructions webpage: Individual Print Entry Form; OR Club Print Entry Form. 7. Title the entry form file with your name/club name. the entry form to the competition host. Prepare the package so that it can be used for the safe return of your work. We strongly suggest enclosing the prints in a New, STAMPED, self-addressed Photo Mailer or Padded Envelope. Do not seal this inner envelope. Place the padded mailer package inside an envelope addressed to the host club. 9. Enclose a copy of the entry form in the package with a return address label. For Club entries, ensure the Club s name is on the return label, not just that of the individual to whom it is to be returned. Address your package to the appropriate competition host and mail it. 10. CAPA and Host Clubs will take all possible care with your entries but CANNOT assume responsibility for loss or damage during handling, transit, storage or judging. 11. The host club will endeavour to mail all entries back within 3-4 weeks of the competition closing date
