7 RoHS Requirements Producers may not place on the market new EEE containing lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), in amounts exceeding the set concentration limits. Producers must be able to demonstrate compliance by submitting technical documentation or other information to the enforcement authority on request & retain the documentation for 4 years after the EEE is placed on the market. 5/12/2005 7

8 Hirose USA and RoHS The Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances is a directive from the European Union (EU) and bans the use of certain substances used in the making of electrical and electronic equipment after July There are six major substances on the list; lead, cadmium, mercury, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB's), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE's), and hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) (better known as chrome 6). This directive stems from the impact these substances have to humans and the environment from both the extraction of the raw materials and their eventual disposal as well as occupational exposure and exposure following disposal. In Europe, over 90% of electrical/electronic equipment goes into landfill sites, which amounts to about 6 million tons of waste every year. Removal of these substances will reduce both health risks and damage to the environment. Hirose Electric is well aware of the RoHS Directive and is actively making the effort to offer products that are in compliance with the directive as soon as possible. Some of our products are already compliant and do not require a part number change. Other products have or will have an alternate part number for the RoHS compliant part. Because some industries are exempt from this directive (military, aerospace and some telecommunications sectors), we may continue to offer the tin-lead option. Hirose Electric USA, Inc. is working on compiling a list of the standard products currently sold in the U.S.A. and the RoHS options for those products. 14 Definitions Green - in some products, such as semiconductors, further improvements are likely to be made beyond the RoHS directive. Other substances will be removed and these "green" environmental packages will not, for example, contain any halogens, usually bromine(br) or antimony based flame retardants. Homogeneous Material - A material that cannot be mechanically disjointed into different materials. The term 'homogeneous' is understood as "of uniform composition throughout", so examples of "homogeneous materials" would be individual types of plastics, ceramics, glass, metals, alloys, paper, board, resins and coatings. The term "mechanically disjointed" means that the materials can be, in principle, separated by mechanical actions such as unscrewing, cutting, crushing, grinding and abrasive processes. 5/12/

15 Definitions Lead-Free - A product where the lead content of any of the raw materials is less than 0.1%. Backward Compatibility - Indicates whether a RoHS compliant product is capable of being processed using the old (SnPb) solder reflow process. Forward Compatibility - Indicates whether the standard (SnPb) product is capable of being processed using a new Pb-free solder reflow process. MSL (Moisture Sensitivity Level) - is a JEDEC industry standard classification that defines the length of time products can be safely exposed to the ambient environment prior to hightemperature reflow soldering. 5/12/

16 Questions Q. What s the difference between lead(pb)-free and RoHS compliant? While lead (Pb) is the most widely used toxic substance in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), the term "lead-free" is often wrongly adopted to refer to all of the substances specified in the restriction of hazardous substances (RoHS) directive. However, RoHS restricts a total of six substances - lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB and PBDE. To be truly compliant with this legislation, the presence of each of these substances must be reduced below their maximum concentration values (MCV). 5/12/

17 Questions Q. Will I still be able to exhaust my stock of lead(pb) inclusive components after the deadline? This depends on whether or not the end product falls within the scope of the Directive. If so, then you will not be permitted to utilize non-compliant components following July 1st 2006, apart from in a spare parts capacity. Before the deadline, you may mix and match older lead (Pb)-inclusive and lead (Pb)-free components as they are generally backwards/forwards compatible. However, this does not extend to all product packages. 5/12/
