10 2. READING COMPREHENSION Read the text and answer the questions. Green Day is a rock band from California in the USA. In the 1960s there were lots of rock groups in California. The most famous group was the Beach Boys. Their music was surf rock music for the beach. Their song Surfing USA was a big hit. Green Day s music is different. It is punk rock. Today Green Day are famous. They are popular in the USA and in Europe too. But it wasn t always like that. At first they only had a small number of fans. But then they had a lucky break. Their song Longview was on MTV. It was their first hit. In the 1990s Green Day were often on MTV. In 2004 they had a big hit with their album American Idiot. In 2006 one of the songs from this album, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, was record of the year in the Grammy Awards. The Grammy Awards are the equivalent of Oscars for pop music. There are three members of the group. They were all born in Billie Joe Armstrong is the singer. He s got five brothers and sisters. Billie s dad was a jazz musician and his mum was a waitress in a restaurant. Billie has a great voice, but he can also play the piano, the guitar, the drums and the saxophone. Mike Dirnt plays the guitar. Dirnt isn t Mike s real surname it s Pritchard. Mike doesn t know his real parents; he was an adopted child. He had a hard life as a child, but music was his passion. He plays guitar and bass guitar. Tre Cool is Green Day s drummer. His real name is Frank Edwin Wright. Tre Cool was born in Germany. His father was a helicopter pilot with the US army. 1. 11 3 COMPREHENSION Jim Clough got up at 7 this morning. He had a good English breakfast eggs and bacon, a cup of tea and some fruit and then he left the house at He works as an employee for a big company in Newcastle, and he usually drives to work, but as today it was a nice morning, he decided to walk. It takes him only 20 minutes from his house to the office. Jim went through St Joseph s Park, and then he started to cross Church Street. Unfortunately, he didn t look very carefully, and while he was crossing the road a young cyclist ran into him. The cyclist fell off his bike and Jim fell down and hurt his left arm badly. He phoned his wife for help, she came immediately and took him home by car. Jim didn t feel well and he went to bed. His wife gave him lunch in bed and after lunch the doctor came. He looked at Jim s arm and said, I m sorry, Mr Clough, but I m afraid you must stay in bed for three days. Three days? asked Jim. Yes, said the doctor. I m sorry, but you hurt your arm seriously.
