ALL MATERIALS listed in the handout for General Information for Drafting Laboratory Students are required for this course. 2. One 2" (minimum size) notebook binder for reference material handouts, and student s own notes % RAG VELLUM DRAFTING TRACING PAPER 18" x 24" Sheets or 24 x 36 sheets 4. THIN SKETCH TRACING PAPER, white or yellow ( flimsy )- 18" X 20 YD. ROLL 5. 1" 3 - ring binder with 3 types of 8-1/2" x 11" size paper: a. ruled writing paper b. unlined paper c. quadrille ruled paper (grids) - 8 x 8 (or 4x4) squares to the inch CONDUCT OF CLASSES Students are requested to review the section titled Conduct of Classes in the General Information for Drafting Laboratory Class Students. It is very important that all students have a clear understanding of the classroom operation. All lectures on the drawing problems will be announced in advance; it is therefore the student s responsibility to attend all lectures. In addition, the first thirty minutes of class session, if necessary, will be devoted to explanation and clarification of the drawing assignment or announcements about the course schedule that may not be repeated on an individual basis. The remainder of class time is to be conducted as a guided practice studio in completion of the drawing assignments. The instructor may at any time during the studio choose to instruct the class on as a whole; each student is responsible for all information presented in class. The information presented in the lectures is of crucial importance in understanding how to complete each drawing assignment. In conjunction with lecture information, reading assignments and class discussions, it is important that students begin to develop clear thinking processes, both analytical (problem solving) thinking and graphic thinking. Graphic thinking is the ability to transform mental thoughts to graphics (sketches) in solving a particular problem. Students will be encouraged to first, attempt to solve a problem by graphic thought. When you feel comfortable with your solution ask for assistance from the instructor. Your solution will be reviewed, critiqued, and possible alternatives and improvements will be suggested. Being able to develop this graphic thinking process will help the student not only in this course but with his or her educational and job-related career.

4 page 4 Large amounts of information given throughout this course will be new, and may not be available from reference sources. It is important, therefore, to attend class regularly. The drawing assignments will follow the course schedule. In addition, it is important that the student consult the appropriate reference sources to fully understand the scope and requirements of the drawing assignments. It will be the student s responsibility to obtain all information missed, whether it is lecture material, handouts, assignments given, or revisions to the course schedule. Situations do arise however which make class attendance impossible. it is the student s responsibility to communicate any such problems to the instructor. ATTENDANCE The student should be aware that it is the exception rather than the rule for an individual to meet the objectives of a course working entirely on his own. It is also unprofessional for the student to miss class unnecessarily and then make demands upon the class or instructor in off hours times to make up the lost time. While there are acceptable reasons for tardiness and a student should feel free to enter class at any time, habitual tardiness is a sign of disregard for the instructor and fellow students and is considered unprofessional. ACADEMIC HONESTY This course will abide by AET/CET/CAD department policy in that any student who does not comply with DTCC policy on academic honesty will receive an R recycle grade for the course. Students should take care that they safeguard their work and do not leave their drawings, blueprints, and other work lying around unattended in the lab. GRADING Each exam and other assignments will be given an individual grade. The value of each individual assignment in the final grade is determined by the instructor and listed in the course supplemental instructions. There will be several exams, each of which will be announced in advance and/or listed on the tentative course schedule. The study topics relevant to each exam will be announced in advance. Students must attend exams on their scheduled dates, as there will be no make-up exams given. Students will be given a grade of zero for those missed. It is the student s responsibility to notify the instructor, in advance, if there will be a problem. All other work is due on the date and time specified by the instructor. Learning to draft includes learning to complete a given task is a specified time period. A grace period will extend from the due date through the end of the next class period. Work turned in after the end of the grace period will receive a 10-percent grade penalty (eg: a grade of 93% turned in late becomes 83%). Work turned in later than 48 hours beyond the end of the grace period will not be accepted and will receive no credit. By the end of this course, the student should gain the ability to schedule his or her time to complete the assignments on time. Each drawing assignment will be evaluated in a

5 page 5 manner appropriate for that assignment. Drawings will be graded on required information, drafting accuracy, neatness, and technical accuracy. The scale of 1-6 will be used to determine the drawing grades. Test will be graded on a percent scale and may or may not be curved at the discretion of the instructions. Your grade will be determined by the amount of work that you do. Each time you finish a set of instructional units, you will earn points. The grade you achieve in this course will depend upon the total number of points you have accumulated. The per cent scale for each grade is presented in the table below. PER NUMBER LETTER CENT GRADE GRADE COMMENT 97% - 100% 6 high A little or no errors 92% - 96% 5 low A a few minor errors 88% - 91% 4 high B several minor errors or a major error 83% - 87% 3 low B a major error with minor errors 79% - 82% 2 high C major errors with missing information and minor errors 75% - 78% 1 low C several major errors and minor errors 67% - 74% N R too many errors 66% - or less U R too many errors and omissions Unfinished assignments will automatically receive a Recycle, R grade and will have a value of ZERO percentage points in the final grade determination. For final grades, class participation and interest will be taken into consideration for grades that are on the border line. Any student who accumulates unexcused absences in excess of 20% of class lecture and lab time throughout the semester should withdraw from the course. Incomplete, I, grades will be given only when the required work is not completed by the end of the semester due to situations beyond the students control.examples of these situations are illness, death in the family, etc. Students not completing the required work without a legitimate reason will receive Recycle, or R grades. It is the student s responsibility to notify the instructor promptly of any problems before the end of the course. If the student has had problems beyond their control which have consistently affected their ability to attend class or meet instructional objectives, it is strongly recommended that the student consult with the

6 page 6 course instructor prior the date on the course calender when the student can withdraw from the course without penalty. COURSE SYLLABUS A. TOPICS OF STUDY: 1. DRAWING AREAS: The specific drawing areas and course sequence will be developed by the instructor. The specific assignments may include exercises from the design phase, the design development phase, or the construction documents phase of an architectural project. The common drawing types in every class section shall be: A. PLAN DRAWINGS: Floor Plan - The floor plan may be developed beginning with the design phase, but by the end of the course the student will produce a fully dimensioned construction document. B. ELEVATION DRAWINGS: Exterior Elevation - The exterior elevation may be a design drawing with dimensions and notes, a design development drawing, or a construction document drawing. C. SECTION DRAWINGS: Wall Section- The wall section may be a design development drawing or a construction document drawing. The other course drawing assignments will include some combination of the following: INTRODUCTION TO ARCHITECTURAL EXPRESSION - Lettering & Linetypes - Orthographic Projection PLAN DRAWINGS: - Floor Plans - Kitchen, Partial Plans - Stairs, Partial Plans ELEVATION DRAWINGS: - Exterior Elevation - Kitchen, Interior Elevation - Other Interior Elevations SECTION DRAWINGS: - Building Sections - Wall Sections - Stairs, Sections DETAIL DRAWINGS: - Stairs, Details - Architectural Details

7 page 7 SCHEDULES: - Door Schedule - Window Schedule - Finish Schedule The drawings selected by the instructor will be listed in the course supplemental instructions. 2. EXAM AREAS - The exam areas will concentrate on specific subject matter related to the drawing assignments selected by the instructor from the textbooks and reference materials. For each exam the relevant study material will be announced by the instructor in advance. B. REQUIRED WORK: The following is a list of the work required to fulfill the requirements of this course. A complete description of each item will be provided by the instructor at the appropriate time throughout the semester. 1. Drawing assignments - There will be a minimum of six drawing assignments. All drawings must be completed for course credit. 2. Exams - 4 to 5 exams 3. Any other work assigned by the instructor, other than drawings or exams that is included in the final grade calculation in the course supplemental instructions. Failure to complete all drawings, exams, and other assignments required by the instructor will make the student a candidate for an R grade, regardless of the grade average in the other work completed. C. ASSIGNMENTS/PROBLEMS: For each specific drawing assignment, certain areas of the assignment may require research, materials selection, on the development of design sketches before the drafting of the final drawing can be completed. In addition, each drawing assignment may require the utilization of problem solving skills, in addition to drafting work. All of this preliminary work is an integral part of the process of producing a set of construction drawings. At the discretion of the instructor, specific design development assignments may be required to be done in a homework notebook. All graphic assignments in the notebook should be done neatly and to approximate scale. All assignments requiring mathematical solutions should show all calculations, neatly and in a logical order so that it is readily apparent what your approach to the problem, reasoning, and results are. Your work should be done clearly enough so that a year from now someone else could pick up your calculations and sketches and follow your work.

8 D. INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: Architectural/Civil Engineering Technologies page 8 I. TECHNICAL DRAWING TYPES: A. Floor Plans - 1. Apply the concept of a horizontal cutting plane and orthographic projection in constructing a floor plan drawing. 2. Correctly use architectural expression in line types - Object lines, Secondary lines, Cutting Plan lines, Hidden lines, Dimension & Extension lines for representation of cutting plane and depth in drawing. 3. Correctly use the graphic conventions for material symbols and building fixtures in a plan drawing. 4. Correctly use architectural graphic standards for dimension layout. B. Section & Details - 1. Apply the concept of a vertical cutting plane and orthograpic projection in constructing a section drawing. 2. Correctly use architectural expression in line types - Object lines, Secondary lines, Cutting Plan lines, Hidden lines, Dimension & Extension lines - for representation of cutting plane in drawing. 3. Correctly use the graphic conventions for material symbols in sections. 4. Correctly represent objects in elevation beyond the cutting plan and objects hidden from view. 5. Correctly use architectural graphic standards for dimension layout, decimals of a foot expressions, and feet-inches expressions in section drawings. C. Elevations - 1. Apply the concept of orthographic projection in constructing an elevation drawing.2. Correctly use architectural expression in line types - Object lines, Secondary lines, Cutting Plan lines, Hidden lines, Dimension & Extension lines - for representation of depth in drawing. 3. Correctly use the graphic conventions for material symbols and building components in elevations. 4. Correctly represent objects hidden from view. II. TECHNICAL DRAWING SKILLS A. Identify and correctly use all of basic drafting tools: parallel rule, triangles, lead holders, lead types, erasers, erasing shields, architect s scale etc. B. Sketch and draft accurately to scale. C. Produce quality hand lettering using conventions of architectural hand lettering. D. Produce quality line weights, object line, secondary line, dimension line, etc., to use architectural graphic expression in finished construction document or design drawings.

9 III. TECHNOLOGY CONCEPTS AND TECHNICAL TERMINOLOGY Architectural/Civil Engineering Technologies page 9 A. Correctly use C.S.I. terminology for building materials in notes on drawings, whether fully spelled out or abbreviated by using a reference standard. B. Identify all of the components of typical platform wood-frame construction, including framing of rough openings for doors and windows and typical finish materials with a minimum of 75% accuracy. IV. PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS A. With use of calculator and/or reference tables, accurately convert feet-inches measurements (8'-10") into decimals of a foot measurements (8.83 ft.) and vice versa to the accuracy of two decimal places. B. With the use of a calculator, calculate net floor area and gross floor area from dimensions of drawing. C. Develop correct rough framing dimensions for a drawing, from designer s clear width dimensions. D. Correctly interpret a design drawing to produce a construction drawing. V. GRAPHIC RECOGNITION AND VISUALIZATION A. Identify building components, sizes, material symbols, reference symbols, and abbreviations in architectural drawings produced by others with a minimum of 75% accuracy. VI. BIBLIOGRAPHIC INSTRUCTION A. Use standard reference sources for producing architectural construction drawings such as Architectural Graphic Standards, Sweet s Catalog File, Timesaver Standards for Architectural Design Data, etc. B. Utilize current publications, books, periodicals, catalogues, etc. to research both design issues and evaluation and selection of construction components. COURSE SCHEDULE A tentative course schedule for the semester will be included in the instructor s supplemental instructions. Adjustments will be made as necessary throughout the semester at the discretion of the instructor. Any changes will be announced at least one week in advance.
