1 Amy Webb News and Views from the MIDDLE AGES YEAR 7/8 Honours Congratulations Kael Cornwall Sports Excellence Year 7 Launch into Leadership On Monday 7 th and Tuesday 8 th April all year 7 students will attend this one day course here at school. Some from Mr Fulton s and some from Mrs Webb s students will be chosen at random each day. Mentoring Interviews Parent interviews are being held on Thursday 10 th April. A note has come home this week for you to request an appropriate time. It is important you discuss some goals prior to the interview and some ideas have been sent home to help with this. Rippa Rugby Most students will be involved in a Rippa Rugby tournament on Wednesday 9th April. It is great to see so many students are participating in extra-curricular activities. Year 1 6 Athletics Year 1-6 Athletics is this Friday April 4th. The activities will start shorty after 9:15 am and finish approximately 12:15 pm with lunch break at around 10:45 am. Parents need to ensure that all children are wearing appropriate clothing, a sun hat and sun block on the day. Parents and caregivers are welcome to come and encourage children. If you can help on the day please contact Ben Holmes in Rm 20. Second Hand Uniform Shop The Second Hand Uniform Shop is opening for the last 2 Friday s of the term (before and after school) am and pm (Friday 4th April and Friday 11th April). $5.00 for second hand junior and senior uniforms. Come and check it out!!

2 AMP INTERVIEWS 10 April 2014 Most parents can likely recall the Academic Mentoring Programme which we introduced so successfully in This involves ALL parents of students in years 7-13 coming into school for a set appointment on 10 April with their sons / daughters and their KORU teacher. This interview lasts for approximately 25 minutes. The discussions that take place result in goals set which will help encourage the achievement level of each student, not only academically, but in other areas also. Goals have to be set in three areas An academic goal, a personal development goal and a self management goal. The date for this will be Thursday 10 April and it would be really good if parents can note this date in their diary as we ask you to get time of your work if necessary to participate in this. Our success with this last year was indicated by our NCEA results of 2013 where our pass rates at each of the three levels were well above the national average. The day will start at 9am and go through to 7pm. There will be some flexibility in terms of appointment times and once confirmed, a letter will come through the post very shortly outlining the day. Last year we had almost a full turn out and it is so important. Look forward to seeing you there. Any queries please contact Allan McKenzie at the school. ATTENDANCE There are occasions when local business owners go overseas for a holiday with their children. We accept their situation. For many, the summer months is the time when money is to be made and parents are involved in their business 24/7. However we also have occasions where students go to Rainbows end and such like for their birthdays during the school week. Now I think Rainbows End is a good idea for a birthday celebration but can this not happen at the weekend or the next school holidays? On occasions these birthdays take out 5 or 6 students! For those students at years 11, 12 and 13 missing a day, which may possibly have a double period in a particular subject, is actually a distinct disadvantage to their learning and their chance of success. What is difficult is there is a strong correlation between success at school and attendance. It would be really good if this was taken into consideration by parents. Again in terms of Beach Hop we appreciate that there will be a need for our students to work. We ask that parents request by letter signed by the business owner for the time off for their children to work over this period. It is an important time for our business community and we appreciate that. Last year we had a focus on good attendance rates and we had our best NCEA results ever. We are trying to improve on attendance again this year. Your help is appreciated.

3 Allan McKenzie From the Deputy Principal Detention procedure at WAS year 7-13 When a student is involved in being late without a good excuse or showing poor behaviour in the classroom he or she will be placed on detention. Detention occurs at break one and goes from 11 am till am. Should a student not attend this detention they will be held back after school on that day from 3pm till 3-45pm. Staff will make home contact with parents each time they place a student on detention. Please note that this will happen whether the student is a bus student or not. They would then have to make alternative arrangements with their parents regarding transport. Any queries please contact Allan McKenzie at the school. Positive Behaviour for Learning rewards A big thanks to Elite windows for donating $100 a month into the PB4L account. This essentially will be the KORU rewards budget. This has been matched by the BOT who will also contribute the same amount resulting in an annual budget of $2500 for Positive Behaviour for Learning. Students will be issued with KORU cards from staff when they consistently show KORU gaining KNOWLEDGE, being ORGANISED, showing RESPECT and modelling UNITY. Rewards will be issued at EACH full school assembly this year. Uniform Can we ask that students in years 1-6 are in PLAIN BLACK FOOTWEAR by the start of term two. Can we also ask that students in years 1-6 are being encouraged to wear plain NAVY or plain BLACK caps. Then the whole year 1-13 will have the same uniform expectations across the school. Caps are part of the uniform for terms one and term four only.

Student leaders will be organising the day so be at the drama room when you are not having your interview to find out where your group is. Saturday rehearsal 10 th May from 10am 12 noon This is a first opportunity to run through the whole performance and polish individual scenes. Attendance is vital! Whangamata Performance - School Hall, Monday 9 th June at 7pm This is a great opportunity for the local community to see the performance which will be performed twice with special performances from music students and kapa haka students. Gold coin donation on the door. Travel and T-shirts The bus is being booked to travel to STAGE CHALLENGE at Baycourt Theatre Tauranga on Monday 16 th June. We will be leaving school around 9am to attend our rehearsal time at 12 noon. The show starts at 6.30pm and Whangamata Area School is on stage at 7.30pm. We leave Tauranga around 9.30pm. STRIKE PERCUSSION: Performing at Whangamata Area School Wednesday April 9th 2.00pm - $5.00 each Strike is a high energy drumming group made up of New Zealand s most outstanding percussionists, specialising in movement-based, choreographed percussion. Pacific, classical and contemporary musical influences, combined with a movement and theatre-based presentation, make STRIKE unique in the world of percussion music. On stage, in arts festivals, street events, and at more intimate corporate events strike has created its own classical crossover audience extending their understanding of percussive-based music and movement. Founded in 1993, STRIKE has worked with leading New Zealand composers, composed its own pieces and collaborated with other musicians and groups from dancers to symphony orchestra. Please pay $5.00 to the school office ASAP.
