2 Need Positive Explosion of Online Courses Student demand for courses Admin wanting to Cash in CMS are mature and inexpensive (Moodle) Negative Faculty do not understand the Pedagogy of teaching online Faculty has no experience as online students Faculty not trained on CMS 2 A New Strategy for Instructing Faculty How to Teach Online Joseph Perret( perretjd@piercecollege.edu)
3 What We Were Doing Was Not Working We tried Vendor course intense one week course that focused on how to use the CMS Result no new courses were started Surveyed faculty the skills did not stick, not enough practice and coaching We tried in service consecutive Fridays 20 started 2 finished Surveyed faculty caught up with distractions, could not keep up with assignments, no feeling of commitment. We tried using College Certificate Programs Few signed up - 4 Surveyed faculty too long a commitment, wanted a quick start The ones that did sign up had a high % of completion - 80%, and started courses right away. 3
4 Our Conclusion We needed an approach that Teaches both Pedagogy and CMS Gets instructors committed Provides a Quick Start no longer than 5-weeks Gives faculty experience as online students Expands beyond our college not large enough customer base to support a class (20 students or so) Provides certificates of completion 4
5 Created a new Course CAOT-134 How to Teach 1.5 units 1 standard hour per week lecture 1 standard hour per week lab with homework 36 hours total Credit/no Credit Conducted entirely online Offer in 5-weeks Middle of the semester (when least busy) Winter intersession or Summer sessions Offered district wide (9-college district) 5
6 Why Create a Course? Students (faculty) are them committed Easier to publicize Admin support (WSCH) Instructors are paid 6
7 Goals Give faculty-student the experience of a fast paced online course Develop an understanding of online pedagogy Model best practice online pedagogy within the course Review the basic elements of Course Management Systems Demonstrate the basic elements of managing an online course Create the first two weeks of faculty participant s online courses. 7
8 Course Outline Conducted entirely online Credit/no Credit but assign grades to all projects Give the feedback Give them incentive (700 points or better to get Credit) Give them experience with gradebook in CMS Orientation session In person (seldom) Via CCCConfer.org 8
9 Week 1 & 2 Online Student Focus of Week 1 & 2 is to give the faculty/student experience as an online student Model show them via example Good pedagogy Good course management CMS learn to use CMS from student perspective Give them assignments and due dates Have them do a group project Assignments are all focused on learning online pedagogy. 9
10 Axiom Mechanics cars never run well Doctors are the worst patients Teachers are the worst student Like herding cats Spend a lot of time the first two weeks coaching If they have not logged in for 48 hours they get an If they have not logged in for 72 hours they get a phone call 10
11 Week Create a Course The final 3 weeks of the course focuses on creating the first two weeks of the faculty/student s actual courses Also cover Accessibility and Fair Use There are required elements in the courses Used to teach both CMS skills and pedagogy Examples: Lecture, PowerPoint, YouTube, Quizzes The enroll in each others courses and act as students (submit assignments, take quizzes etc) This gives them actual student data so they can Grade assignments Give feedback Work with grade book 11
12 Follow up Support Commitment to work with them after the course is completed Formed strong bonds with group members Maintain a database of those that complete the course and recommend them to departments Working on a the next phase Advanced - How to Teach an Online Course 12
13 Results Course has been offered 4 times Total of 100 students attempted the course 70% completion rate 60% have gone on to create online courses or online content to traditional courses 13
