1 Introduction to Burlington Interactive Mapping The City of Burlington s Interactive mapping is designed to be an easy-to-use tool that will allow you to explore Burlington geographically. Our mapping allows you to search by address, intersection or search for specific facilities such as arenas, pools, community centres, GO stations, libraries, parks and more! After searching, the map will centre on the location of the chosen facility. We also offer Aerial Photography on almost all our mapping pages, click on the camera icon to make it visible. If you require more information about any of the functionality on our mapping pages, please click the Help button in the upper right corner. Feel free to explore all the mapping we have to offer. If there is anything you think would improve your experience, please feel free to let us know what you would like to see. Browser Requirements Please note that our Interactive mapping requires Internet Explorer version 5.5 or higher with JavaScript enabled. If you are using Windows XP with service pack 2 or higher, the built in pop-up blocker may disable some capabilities. To resolve this issue, you can add mapping.burlington.ca to your accepted sites.

3 Interactive Maps Overview Mapping Sidebar The sidebar displays general information about the current map, detailed information regarding a selected attribute or the various layers that may be turned on or off within the map. Hide Sidebar Button Clicking on this button hides the Mapping Sidebar to the left of your screen. Clicking the button again will make the sidebar reappear. Map Imagery Selector The map imagery selector tool allows you to choose between an Open Street Map of all the map features and aerial imagery of how the location appears in the real world. 1

4 Map Tools Clicking on the map tools button will display more features of the mapping application. The three tool sections are Basic Tools, Create and Measurement. Basic Tools: Print Clicking on the Print button allows you to print the current map view. Once the print button is selected a dialog box will appear with various printing options such as paper size and resolution. Defaults will be loaded in the dialog box and should be acceptable for most applications. After selecting the appropriate print options the mapping application will process the map and display the final printable map in a separate tab or window. The map may now be printed using the standard print function within your browser. Basic Tools: Create The Create tools allow you to draw, highlight and label items or points of interest on the map. Once a tool is selected a pop-up box at the bottom of the screen will appear directing you in the proper use of that tool. 2

5 Basic Tools: Measurement The Measurement tools allow you to measure distances and areas of selected points or regions on the map. Once a tool is selected a pop-up box at the bottom of the screen will appear that will direct you in the proper use of that tool. Units of measure may also be modified by using the drop down lists beside the measurement tools. Current Location The current location tool will use your computer or mobile devices built in services to approximate your location at the time of use. Some browsers may block the use of this feature automatically. In order for this feature to work location services must be allowed on your device. An example of the security popup in Internet Explorer is shown below. Zoom Tool The Zoom Tool allows you to adjust your proximity to the map and its features. Clicking the + will zoom into the map and clicking the - will zoom out. Double-clicking on any point on the map will automatically zoom in closer to that point. If your mouse has a scroll wheel feature scrolling up while the curser is over a point on the map will zoom in and scrolling down will zoom out. Bookmark Tool The Bookmark Tool allows you to save the current view of the map so it may be seen at a later point. Clicking on the bookmark icon will open the Bookmark Current Extent tab. Once the tab is clicked a pop-up will appear prompting for you to label the bookmark. Once the bookmark is named it will be saved as a bookmark tab to be used at any time. To remove a bookmark click on the grey circular x beside the corresponding bookmark name. 3

6 Map Layers & Home Toggle Map Layers & Home Toggle: Home Tab The Home Tab displays general information in the mapping sidebar about the current map you are viewing. This tab is set as the default for the mapping sidebar. Map Layers & Home Toggle: Layers Tab The Layers Tab displays the layers of data contained within the current map. These layers may be turned on or off by clicking the check boxes beside the respective layer name. An example of the general map is shown below where the City Owned Trees layer is turned on and off to display and hide the tree images. Turning off the layer section will turn off all layers contained within that section. An example of this is shown below with the Address_Locator layer section. 4

7 Also in the layers tab is a button to display the legend of the layer features currently displayed on the map. Clicking on this button will display the legend in the Mapping Sidebar. To return to the previous view in the layers tab click the Show Layer List button. For easy navigation to specific map features you can click on the side arrow beside the feature layer. Clicking the side arrow will show two new buttons named zoom to full extent and zoom to visible scale. The zoom to full extent button will zoom into or away from the map to show the full area the layer feature covers on the map. The zoom to visible scale button will zoom to the point where the layer features are visible on the map. Selecting Features To find more information regarding a specific feature on the map click on it and the information pop-up will appear. The pop-up displays general information about the feature with the option to view additional details. Clicking on view additional details will open a list of more information regarding the feature in the Mapping Sidebar. 5

8 Search Field The Search Field may be used to search for any part of the City. Typing a query into the field will pull results from all aspects of the map and display them in the Mapping Sidebar. Look through the results in the sidebar and select the option which most relates to your search. Clicking on a result title in the sidebar will focus the map onto the selected feature and display its detailed information in the sidebar. I Want To Button The I Want To Button displays quick links to commonly accessed features. The features are shown in a drop-down list and include viewing the home panel, finding data on the map, viewing the legend and map layers, returning to the initial map extent and printing or exporting a map. 6
