1 INTENSIVE COURSE OF ITALIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS Year 2015 ESU of Verona - Regional Company for the Right to University Study, in collaboration with the University of Verona and the Veneto Region, organizes an intensive course of Italian language and culture for foreign students from the 18 th of August to the 15 th of September The course includes, beyond language and grammar lessons, seminars and workshops as well as guided tours, trips, and excursions to places of tourist and cultural interest. The course lasts about 4 weeks numbering 80 hours. PURPOSES OF THE COURSE The course is addressed to students enrolled in the foreign Universities with which ESU of Verona has already had a long lasting reciprocal student exchange history, and also to external users as long as adult of age. CONTENTS AND COURSE ORGANIZATION According to the Common European Framework of Reference for foreign languages, the course is divided into three different levels: 1. A1 level, Breakthrough - A2 level, Waystage 2. B1 level, Threshold 3. B2 level, Vantage There will be no more than 25 students per class. The lectures, seminars and guided tours will take place from Monday to Friday (about 20 hours per week). All the proposed activities will allow the participants: - To improve and reinforce their written and oral linguistic capacities; - To reach a good level in communication skills; - To address issues related to history, geography, and Italian culture. 1
2 THE COURSE EDUCATIONAL OFFER 1. Basic User (Elementary) A1 level Breakthrough Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way, provided the other person talks slowly and clearly, and is prepared to help. A2 level Waystage Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment, and matters in areas of immediate need. 2. Independent User B1 level Threshold Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst traveling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes, and ambitions, and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. 3. Independent User B2 level Vantage Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialization. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. 2
3 Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. Before the course begins, participants have to take a language examination. Then, they will be divided in groups according to their level, so that everyone feels at ease.- Part of the program is dedicated to teaching Italian language (lectures in the morning), while another part is devoted to culture (afternoon seminar).- As soon as the participants arrive, they will receive a folder with educational material, primary information, and a plan of the city. Teachers and ESU staff are always available to answer questions about the course, and give information and advice. THE SOCIAL AND RECREATIONAL PROGRAMME To obtain the maximum benefit from the course, it is important that students speak Italian inside and outside the classroom. Therefore, it will be important to give opportunity for participants to practice Italian in various situations: they will be involved in all the aspects of the social and recreational program (tours, seminars, guided tours, etc.). Students will take part also into theatre workshops. Those students who have the hobby of music are invited to bring their musical instrument with them. CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE At the end of the course, all the students who regularly attended the course (no more than 3-days of absence) will be entitled to sit for the final exam and will be provided with a certificate of proficiency. A certificate of attendance will be issued to the students who will fail or will not be entitled to sit for the exam (provided that they attended at least 2/3 of the course). 3
