2 Executing at the front line workshop Outsized results In the past, new managers learned effective leadership over time, through a series of relatively small, incremental assignments. Few organizations can afford such a luxury today. The Executing at the front line program jump-starts the learning curve to enable new managers to understand and improve team performance, confidently and effectively. Hay Group experts recognize that, left to their own resources, one-third of managers drive superior performance; one-third neither help nor hinder their teams; and one-third actually undermine performance. Reducing the failure rate of first-time managers not only improves organizational performance, it also reduces the costs associated with turnover and improves your leadership pipeline for higher-level positions. The managerial competencies at the core of this workshop incorporate key emotional competencies that have been demonstrated to have a direct impact on business results.
3 Our program Learning how to manage is the missing piece in most business education. It s seldom taught in college, or in business school, except as a collection of theories. Yet no change in a business career is as important or as potentially disastrous as the first assumption of managerial responsibilities. Hay Group has distilled into a one-day program a series of simulations, team exercises and guided discussions that uncover the two most essential elements in mastering the managerial role: 1 Understanding management functions that is, decoding the role of a manager to understand what it requires In most cases, no one tells a first-time manager how their new job description translates into day-to-day activities. What does a manager actually do to add value to the work his or her team is performing? 2 Evaluating your own managerial competencies or understanding what you bring to your new role Once a new manager understands what their position requires, the obvious next step is to assess how their own capabilities stack up against those requirements. Where does the manager need to make improvements or changes in their behavior?
4 One day drives a lifetime of results Executing at the front line is a carefully designed program that uses team exercises and guided discussions. It not only gives participants a practical framework for understanding the managerial role, but also provides direct, eye-opening experiences of the value of effective leadership. The program brings the essential functions of the managerial role into clear focus: planning, organizing and directing a team; and motivating and energizing disparate personalities to drive creativity, productivity and ultimately deliver more effective results. Importantly, the curriculum ventures beyond mere functions to managerial competencies: the skills and behaviors that make managers more effective in adding value to their team. To link these workshop insights to day-to-day realities, participants receive personal feedback from their colleagues, including both supervisors and team members, regarding how effectively they deliver management functions, and the strengths of their own managerial competencies. Working with their Hay Group consultant, each participant uses these candid insights to create a personal plan that guides their own leadership development, linked to actual business results. 5 Managerial competence: the essential antidote to the Peter Principle Executing at the Front Line introduces the proven principles of managerial competencies to jump-start new leaders as they make the challenging shift from managing themselves to managing a team. It results in stronger team performance in the short term and improved prospects for continuing growth in the long term. First-time managers are usually promoted in recognition of their individual success. But the qualities that contribute to success in doing the work do not always correlate to the requirements of managing the work. As a result, new managers are especially vulnerable to the Peter Principle the proposition that employees are promoted until they reach positions for which they are no longer competent. In our intensely competitive economic environment, no organization can afford incompetence at the front line.
