To promote pronunciation accuracy and improve understanding of speech system with the help of IPA symbols and application of phonology system 2. To raise awareness of the linguistic practices of native speakers of English 3. To improve awareness of the elements for clear articulation and fluency of speech 4. To engender confidence when speaking in and listening to English Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs) Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. Pronounce English accurately, confidently, naturally and smoothly 2. Describe the phonetic structure of sounds, stress, intonation patterns and rhythm patterns 3. Apply IPA symbols in simple assessment. 4. Analyze a range of spoken English with various accents, intonations and natural sounding English rhythm patterns 1

2 Alignment of the CILOs with the Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs) of AA in Bilingual Communication Studies: Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs) I. Communicate in the spoken and written language of their option (English, Japanese, French, Korean, Spanish) about personal, social, cultural and workplace matters at a level equivalent to an internationally recognized assessment test* (see below). CILOs (Please if the CILO(s) is/are aligned with the PILO II. III. IV. Demonstrate a level of language skills appropriate for further study, for employment and for personal development. Apply enhanced general knowledge of languages, society and culture of their option for further study and/or employment. Identify and critically explore problems, gather relevant information, carry out and present basic research under guidance, and propose solutions to problems both individually and as part of a team. Relate major ideas in arts and humanities, science and technology to their own area of study. * English: IELTS 6 French: B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages Japanese: JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) level N3 or above Korean: KLPT (Korean Language Proficiency Test) level 2 or TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) Level 3 Spanish: B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages 2

3 Keyword Syllabus: Speech and writing The features of speech and writing; the differences between speech and writing. Segmental phonology The analysis of phonemes and syllables. Prosodic phonology Various features of the speaker or the utterance with the use of rhythm, stress and intonation of speech. Consonants, vowels and diphthong Describing the consonants in terms of place of articulation and manner of articulation; classifying the vowels and diphthong in terms of the position of tongue and jaw, and the shape of lips. IPA symbols Explaining English phonemes in terms of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and using IPA symbols for phonetic transcription; Stress and syllables The guidelines for stressed syllables, word stress, sentence stress Intonation The variations of pitch, stress and length while speaking. Strong and weak form The use of strong and weak form in stressed and unstressed words. Elision, intrusion, assimilation and linking The deletion, creation and change of a sound because of the sounds around it. Recitation Reciting with accurate pronunciation, appropriate intonation, stress, speed and pausing in a very natural way to convey the meaning of the text. Oral dubbing Replacing voices on cartoons or films to demonstrate appropriate intonation and pitch. Idiomatic expressions The use of proverbs, idioms, habitually used expressions, collocations Slangs The use of informal and non-standard words and expressions in the speaker's language or dialect. Accents The differences in accent between General British (RP ) and General American, and other accents of spoken English 3
