1 An appendix to the Behaviour Policy At Marshalls Park School bullying is nacceptable We Aim To:. create a school which puts a full stop to bullying and harassment;. create effective systems and procedures for dealing with bullying;. ensure that issues of bullying are covered suitably in lessons. ensure all members of the school community are aware of our anti-bullying policy. 1

2 Definition of a Bully A person can be seen as demonstrating bullying behaviour if he or she engages in aggressive and manipulative behaviour for personal gain and/or pleasure. Some bullies think that they aren t bullying because they say they are joking or they want to look good in front of their mates and don t realise it hurts others. This is not acceptable BULLYING IS NOT A JOKE 2

3 What is Bullying? A person is bullied when she or he is exposed, regularly and over time to unacceptable/inappropriate/unkind actions on the part of one or more people. It is: Deliberately hurtful behaviour Repeated over a period of time Carried out with the express intention of causing distress Carried out on those powerless to resist Bullying may take many forms but the following are the most common: Verbal - including name calling and abusive language (family comments) Physical - including any action resulting in physical pain and injury Social - including deliberate social exclusion and any action damaging to the reputation of a person Emotional - including any action causing psychological pain It includes racist, sexist and homophobic comments. It can involve Text messaging by mobile phone, Facebook, MSN, Myspace (social networking sites) 3

4 Responsibilities of School Staff The school recognises that it will make every effort to make a difference in relation to the extent and nature of bullying in the school. Any complaint of bullying must be treated seriously. 1. All members of the school community must be responsible for dealing with bullying. This includes teaching staff, pupils, support staff and parents. 2. All incidents of bullying or harassment should be responded to immediately, even if some aspects of the response are dealt with at a later stage. 3. Support staff and midday supervisors are encouraged to be vigilant and report any incidents they see or are made aware of to the Year Leader and/or senior staff on duty that day. 4. Isolated incidents of bullying should, in the first instance, be dealt with by the class teacher or member of staff who has become aware of it. This should be done in consultation with the teachers of the pupil or pupils involved. This does not preclude the involvement of the Year Leader or SLT at this stage. 5. Where there is evidence of systematic bullying the Year Leader and Form Tutor should be informed immediately. 6. SLT must be informed when it is clear that the matter is serious and when there is a child protection issue. 7. The Headteacher must be informed of any serious bullying incidents. 8. Incidents of bullying should be placed on the Learning Log. If you keep quiet about bullying you have seen, you are responsible too 4

5 Liaison with Parents Parents need to be confident that the school will take incidents of bullying seriously and will handle them in a sensitive manner. Parents must be informed by staff of any serious bullying incident relating to their child whether the child is the individual being bullied or doing the bullying. It is important that parents are encouraged to contact the school as early as possible with their concerns so that action can take place. Strategies to achieve this include: Asking parents to formally support the school in its anti-bullying strategy by signing the Home School Agreement at the front of their child's homework diary. Providing parents with up to date information on issues relating to bullying eg cyberbullying at least annually sent out where appropriate 5

6 Responsibilities of Pupils The school believes that it is important to raise pupils awareness, knowledge and understanding of bullying issues through the curriculum. It also believes that pupils should actively participate in the schools anti-bullying strategy. This is achieved by: A programme of learning activities and assertiveness training delivered through Pastoral lessons The exploration of bullying issues in Drama and English, RE, Music and Art Within our school, pupils are encouraged to be as open as possible in reporting incidents of bullying, to themselves or to others, to their Form Tutor or Class Teacher. This openness is to be encouraged. Discussion of bullying issues through the School s Council and Pupil Voice 6

7 Procedures Class Teachers Parents Office Staff Who Could the Victim Tell? Any other adult Friends Learning Mentors Year Leader Midday Assistants Form Tutor Who Could Offer Support and How? Older Pupils: Could offer support through talking about situations and maybe being a mediator between the victim and the bully (in less serious cases). Parents: They need to know who to contact at school if there is a problem and what the consequences will be. Teachers/Tutors: Need to have set procedures to follow so that there is a consistent response to bullying. Friends: Need to be encouraged to tell a teacher. 7

8 Strategies for Helping those who have been bullied. It is important, in the first instance, to believe the victim's perception of what happened and to assure them that they have acted correctly in coming to you.. Actively listen to the child (stop what you are doing, look at her/him, respond by nodding and making supportive sounds).. Ask them to tell you what happened by asking questions such as: "Tell me what happened?" "Who was involved?" "When and where did this happen?" "What did you say or do at the time?" "How often has this happened or is this the first time?" "Was there anyone who saw or heard this?" "How have you been affected by this bullying or harassment?". Make a report of the incident using the school Learning Log It will not be helpful to the recipient if you conduct an interrogation or if you make comments or ask questions which make them feel that in some way they were responsible for the behaviour, or that their complaint is trivial or time wasting 8

9 Advice for Pupils The following advice has been included in the students booklet on what they should do if they are being bullied and how a member of staff should respond If you are being bullied Try to stay calm and look as confident as you can Be firm and clear-look them in the eye and tell them to stop Get away from the situation as quickly as possible Tell an adult what has happened straight away After you have been bullied Tell a teacher or another adult in your school Tell your family If you are scared to tell an adult by yourself, ask a friend to come with you Keep speaking up until someone listens and does something to stop the bullying Use peer support service Don t blame yourself for what has happened When you are talking to an adult about bullying, be clear about what has happened to you. How often it has happened Who was involved Who saw what was happening Where it happened What you have done about it already 9

10 Strategies to help stop bullying behaviour Most bullies are happy enough to talk about what has happened as long as they think you (the adult) are being reasonable When dealing with the bully diffuse the situation; do not exacerbate it by being angry, sarcastic or indignant yourself The pre-determined goal when talking with the bully is to get him/her to feel that the situation of the victim is something to feel concerned about Try to communicate with the perpetrator on equal terms rather than from a hierarchical position. Try to devolve power Accept the bully s account initially, in order to keep him/her talking When challenging a bully about his/her behaviour and working towards a resolution, try the following statements/questions I would like to talk to you because I ve heard that x has been having a rather bad time. I need your help, x has been rather upset recently What do you know about all this? What have you seen? After you have made the first couple of statements remain silent and wait for the bully to respond. (The wait may seem to take forever, but wherever possible don t rescue him or her by talking to ease the tension). Whilst the bully tells you his/her side of the incident, do not interrupt but encourage him/her with nods and phrases such as oh, really, that s interesting, etc. When you detect in the bully a note of concern for the victim, stop the conversation, reinforce the notion that you both agree that something is wrong with x. Elicit constructive solutions What shall we do about it? Accept the bully s suggestions, if reasonable; then announce that you and he/she will meet again in a few days time to discuss how things have gone. Make a time and date and place to meet. 10
