3 Spring Testing PSAT 10 April 11 or April 12. Districts have selected one of these dates to administer the PSAT 10. April 25 or April 26. Make up test date, depending on the primary testing date selected by the district. Students do not need to register for the PSAT 10. Registration will be taken care of by the school district and the Colorado Department of Education.

4 About PSAT 10 The PSAT10 focuses on the skills and knowledge at the heart of high school education. It measures: What students learn in high school What students need to succeed in college The PSAT 10 measures reading, writing and language, and math skills developed over many years. The PSAT10 does not ask for facts from literature, history, or science, or for recall of math formulas, because it measures reasoning and critical thinking skills. No need to discover secret tricks or cram the night before. There is no penalty for guessing. The test length is 2 hours, 45 minutes.

5 Spring Testing Colorado SAT 11 th grade students attending Colorado public schools will participate in the CO SAT. Test day is: April 11, 2017 Makeup test day is: April 25, 2017 Students will have the choice to take the SAT or the SAT with optional Essay. Students do not need to register for the April CO SAT. Registration will be taken care of by the school district and the Colorado Department of Education. Initial registration for all students is for the SAT without essay. Students who do not want to take the optional essay do not need to do anything. Students who wish to include the essay must add it to their registration between January 27 February 12, This is a student task. Students who choose to take SAT with Essay will complete both the SAT and essay during the school day test administration.

10 The Optional SAT Essay Information and Resources

11 The Optional SAT Essay The SAT Essay is voluntary and optional and can be added at no cost to students. Adding the essay to their SAT registration is a student level choice and the student s responsibility. Individual teachers, the school, or district cannot make a policy decision as to who will or will not take the essay nor should schools or districts encourage or discourage individual students from taking the SAT Essay. The SAT Essay is given as part of the school day administration There will be separate testing rooms for the SAT and the SAT with Essay. The SAT with Essay will take approximately one hour longer than the SAT.

12 SAT Essay Overview Offered at the conclusion of the required SAT tests (Reading, Writing and Language, and Math) Requires students to make purposeful, substantive use of textual evidence in a way that can be objectively evaluated Not designed to elicit student s subjective opinions Connects reading and writing in a manner that both embodies and reinforces the interdependency of these ELA/literacy skills Uses a consistent essay prompt in all administrations of the SAT. The passage for analysis will differ from administration to administration.

13 SAT Essay Scores Each student who opts to take the SAT Essay will receive three scores: Reading score Analysis score Writing score The range for each score is 2-8. Each essay will be read by two readers who will score on a scale of 1-4 Two readers scores will be added together for scores of 2-8 The SAT Essay is scored separately from the SAT and does not factor into a student s SAT total score or subject scores.

14 Considering the SAT with Essay The SAT Essay asks students to engage in the type of writing often required in higher education writing courses. The SAT Essay is optional, but may be recommended or required by the college your student is considering. Each college sets their own policy regarding the essay; contact colleges for specific policies Some colleges have shared their policies with the College Board. Find the list at

15 Two Ways for Students to Add the Optional Essay to their SAT Registration Students who wish to take the optional essay must add it to their SAT registration between January 27 February 12, There is no fee for students who wish to include the essay. Register online using their College Board account. Register via phone by calling the College Board s Colorado Service Desk. An informational handout about the SAT Essay is available from schools to assist students.

16 Creating a College Board Account Go to collegeboard.org and complete the requested information NOTE: Remind students to create a new account using their full legal name that matches what the school has on file.

17 Using an Existing College Board Account Provide username and password If a student has forgotten their username or password, they can have an sent to recover it.

20 Register Online for the Optional Essay Select Add the essay to my registrations from the Change Your Registration page We recommend having interested students update their registration during the school day so that the counselor can assist if students have a problem.

23 Removing the Optional Essay from a Registration If the student would like to remove the essay, select the link to Remove the essay from my registration link before the 2/12/17 deadline. Students must take the version of the SAT that they are registered for as of 2/12/17. After that date, students will no longer have the ability to add or remove the optional essay from their registration.

24 Registering for the SAT Essay by Phone Students or their parents may call to register for the essay. Call the College Board at and select Option 2. When calling, students will need to provide Legal first and last name Date of birth School name

25 Sending Scores Every student can send their scores to up to four colleges or universities for free. Students can choose where to send their free reports up to 9 days after their test date. Score Choice TM enables students to: Choose which scores to send to colleges by test administration. Send only the scores they want to send to colleges. * Sending scores is optional. Student scores will not be released to colleges without the student s specific consent. * Students will need to comply with an institution s stated score-use practice. 25
