Our questions relate to the Barren River Community Health Planning Council s 5 Priority Health issues: Obesity Drug Abuse & Addiction Diabetes Cardiovascular Disease Lung Cancer This interview will cover services and supports for Drug Abuse & Addiction. Can you provide a rough overview of the types of services that you provide most often to treat or address drug abuse and/or addiction?

2 Interview Questions - For Drug Abuse/Addiction Treatment Professionals Page 2 PROBE: Who would you say are the 3-4 groups or types of people you treat most often for drug abuse and/or addiction (age groups, socio-economic status; educational levels; employment; life circumstances, etc) PROBE: What would you say are the 4-5 most common diagnoses? 3. In your experience, what does it typically take for patients who have a drug use or addiction problem to be successful at getting their problems under control, and being able to function in school or job, or to carry out other responsibilities? [ex: taking medications properly, lifestyle changes, lab values good, etc.] PROBE: What services would these people typically have used, either in-patient or outpatient, or other types?

What are the 3-4 most common barriers to treatment for drug abuse problems? PROBE: Once a person in treatment (in-patient or out-patient), what are the most common barriers to success? 5. What is the appropriate role of the individual s personal physician or medical provider? PROBE: How can healthcare institutions better equip themselves to support this role? (This might include hospitals, rehab services, nursing homes, etc.)

When a student or employee has been identified as having a drug abuse problem, but isn t at the point of dismissal, what are the most useful ways in which a school or worksite might support or encourage recovery? 7. Let s focus on worksites for a minute. Our Council has heard from many employers that drug abuse and addiction are common problems. If you could provide a training session for worksite managers and/or supervisors on drug abuse and addiction, what 5 things would you be sure to tell them? PROBE: What about worksite policy? Other than routine and/or random drug screening, which worksite policies might be most useful for prevention of drug abuse, or for getting employees and/or family members into treatment?

Our Council has heard from many School officials and staff that drug abuse and addiction are common problems among students. If you could provide a training session for school staff and/or officials on drug abuse and addiction, what 5 things would you be sure to tell them? PROBE: What about school policy? Other than routine and/or random drug screening, which school policies might be most useful for prevention of drug abuse, or for getting students and/or family members into treatment? 9. Now, let s talk about the community as a whole. How can our local community best support access to drug abuse & addiction treatment? Let s start with the court system. PROBE: What about local government (elected officials, city/county government services, etc.)?

PROBE: What about churches and other faith-based or volunteer organizations? 10. Overall, in what ways is the system of drug abuse & addiction treatment a success? ( What s working well? ) PROBE: In what ways is the treatment system failing the patient? PROBE: In what ways is the treatment system failing the community?

(enough of them, locations/hours good, welcoming to new members, leaders qualified, etc.) PROBE: Thinking about all of these community entities, organizations, and services we have discussed so far, how can they help support our local self-help groups?
