3 THE WAR ENDS (66) - Union Gen. Grant and Gen. Sherman Pounded on Confederate forces - Sherman encouraged pillaging and destruction (war of attrition) - Confederate Gen. Lee was forced to surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, Some Southerners refused to accept defeat, like John Wilkes Booth

Lincoln offered amnesty for all Southerners who took an oath of loyalty (1863) - Northern troops remained in South (occupying) - RADICAL REPUBLICANS (in Congress) what did they do? 1. Prevent confederate leaders returning to power 2. Guarantee Black Americans the right to vote

10 RECONSTRUCTION AMENDMENTS (68) What did each do? - 13 th Amendment (1865) Banned slavery in all states - Fourteenth Amendment (1866) - All people born in America (and legal immigrants) entitled to equal access to laws - Fifteenth Amendment (1870) - Voting can not be restricted based on race

11 THE SOUTH DURING RECONSTRUCTION (68) - Freeman s Bureau Federal agency focused on feeding and clothing to help former slaves - Carpetbaggers Play RECONSTRUCTION #7 (6m to 38:38) Northerners who went into South to help run their local governments hated by Southerners - Scalawags - Southerners who helped Carpetbaggers also hated by Southerners

12 What was result of tensions? Radical Republicans wanted to force former slave South to give full freedom to former slaves Former Slaves they d trusted they were really free, just like whites Former Slave Owners looked for ways to regain control over slaves
