2 Resources A natural resource is a product of the environment that is used by humans or other organisms. Natural Resources can be Renewable or Nonrenewable Renewable Resources can be renewed or quickly replaced through a natural process Nonrenewable Resources can not be replaced by natural processes as fast as they are used

3 Types of Natural Resources Renewable Nonrenewable Air (wind) Coal Soil Oil Water Natural Gas Living things Mineral

4 Fossil Fuels Fossil fuels are nonrenewable resources that formed over millions of years from decayed remains of ancient plants and animals Fossil fuels cannot be replaced at the rate at which we use them Examples: Coal, Oil, natural gas

5 Fossil Fuels Coal a solid fossil fuel that formed from decayed plant material Petroleum crude oil a liquid fossil fuel Formed from ancient sea organisms Makes fuel for automobiles Natural gas a gaseous fossil fuel Formed from ancient sea organisms Natural gas often collects above deposits of petroleum deep underground

6 Fossil Fuels Advantages They are able to produce large amounts of energy when burned Inexpensive energy source Disadvantages Burning fossil fuels releases pollutants into the air Contributes to acid rain and global warming Coal mining is dangerous for miners and destroys land Leads to water pollution Disturbs habitats

7 Nuclear Power Nuclear power is produced by breaking apart atoms to release energy stored in the nucleus Often uranium, a nonrenewable resource is used An advantage of nuclear energy is that it doesn t release chemical pollutants into the air A disadvantage of nuclear is the possibility of a nuclear accident and it creates radioactive wastes

9 Solar Energy Energy in the form of electromagnetic waves from the sun Homes and businesses can install solar collectors that convert light energy into thermal energy (heat energy) and electrical energy Large collectors can provide energy for power plants Solar cells can help power cars

10 Solar Energy Advantages No air/water pollution Small systems are inexpensive Disadvantages Solar power plants are expensive Needs storage backup

11 Wind Energy Energy obtained from moving air which moves blades on a windmill The blades are attached to a shaft which turns the gears connected to an electric generator, which produces electricity Wind farms must be built where wind blows steady throughout the year

12 Wind Energy Advantages No air/water pollution Inexpensive to build, use Disadvantages Needs significant amount of wind, land

13 Hydroelectric Energy obtained from the kinetic energy of water that flows through a dam The moving water turns the blades of devices called turbines The turbines move the parts of the electric generators that produce electricity Hydroelectric power plants are built on many rivers in the US and around the world

14 Hydroelectric Advantages No air/water pollution Inexpensive to use Provides water recreation Disadvantages Harms natural habitats Good sites for dams are already in use

15 Biomass Biomass is any organic material that can be used as an energy source The original source of the energy in biomass is the Sun which is passed onto plants through photosynthesis Examples burning wood, burning plant material, collecting methane gas released at landfills, producing alcohol from the fermentation of crops

16 Biomass Advantages Available in less developed countries Burning garbage reduces the amount in landfills Disadvantages Burning wood releases carbon dioxide Recycling landfill gas is expensive

17 Tidal Energy Tidal energy is energy produced by the rise and fall of ocean tides To produce energy a dam holds back the water as a tide rises or begins to fall Gates in the dam are opened The water flows from a higher level to a lower level through the dam As the water flows the energy moves parts of an electric generator, which produces electricity Used in France

18 Tidal Energy Advantages No air/water pollution Inexpensive to use Tides are reliable Disadvantages Only usable when tide moves in and out Few sites with strong enough tides

19 Geothermal Energy Heat energy from within the Earth that can be used to heat buildings and produce electricity Iceland relies on geothermal energy to warm its building and produce electricity To use geothermal a country must be located over large areas of volcanically active ground Hot springs and geysers are common products of geothermal energy

20 Geothermal Energy Advantages Inexpensive to use Little impact on the environment Takes up little space Disadvantages Few sites with adequate geothermal conditions Can release hazardous gases into the air

21 Conservation As the population increases both renewable and nonrenewable resources will need to be used more wisely The wise use of natural resources is called conservation Ways to conserve include reducing resources used, reusing resources, and recycling resources

22 Sustainable development Can be used as a means of conserving vital resources such as land, forests, fisheries, air and fresh water In sustainable development, people find ways to use resources to meet their needs in a way that does not destroy or deplete the resources for future generations

23 Effects of Pollution Desertification the process of turning productive land into deserts Can be prevented or reversed Occurs when land is overused in dry areas Deforestation forests are cleared Destroys habitats Overfishing practice of harvesting fish at a rate faster than the population can renew its numbers
