1 Equality Information Statement for Publication Western Downland CofE (Aided) Primary School Equality and Diversity Information Statement January 2013 Western Downland Primary School has a strong commitment to equality and diversity, embodied in our Equalities Policy. As a Church of England Voluntary Aided School, our approach to issues of equality is informed by the values and beliefs which are intended to shape the activities and attitudes of all who participate in the life of our School. We respect the integrity of every individual and believe in the inherent worth of each adult and pupil, regardless of background, lifestyle or circumstance. We recognize that each person, through their particular and distinctive experience and insight, has the potential to make a unique and invaluable contribution to the success of our School. We recognise the importance of harnessing a wide range of characteristics, abilities, experiences and insights to ensure the continuing healthy development of the School community, in a diverse and increasingly sophisticated world. Within the means available, we are committed to fostering growth, both personal and professional, in pupils, volunteer adults, staff, and governors. We recognize the importance of justice in our dealings with one another, and believe that no one should be treated unfairly, especially those who, because of background, lifestyle or circumstance might be more vulnerable to mistreatment. To sustain this ethos, we believe it is essential that all adults, and especially prospective staff, staff and governors, should be aware of, and in sympathy with, the Christian ethos which underpins the School s values and activities, and should be prepared to participate fully in the life of the School. We welcome our general duty under the Equality Act 2010 to: Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, victimisation and any other conduct prohibited by the Equality Act 2010 Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it. and our specific duties to: publish information every year about our school population explain how we have due regard for equality publish equality objectives which show how we plan to tackle particular inequalities and reduce or remove them. We also welcome our duty under the Education and Inspections Act 2006 to promote community cohesion. We welcome the emphasis in the OfSTED inspection framework on the importance of narrowing gaps in achievement which affect, amongst others: pupils from certain cultural and ethnic backgrounds pupils who belong to low- income households and pupils known to be eligible for free school meals pupils with disabilities pupils who are in care

4 Other information Information Governor representation as at Jan 2013 Evidence and commentary % Male, % Female 100% White British. Qualitative information: How we have due regard for equality The information provided here aims to show that we give careful consideration to equality issues in everything that we do. Schools are required to have due regard to the need to eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct that is prohibited by the Equality Act The information below is a summary of how we are aware of this particular requirement and how we respond to it. Our governing body is fully aware of the Equality Act When governors consider equality issues in relation to policies, decisions and services, a record of this is kept in the minutes and papers of the governing body meetings. We deal promptly and effectively with all incidents and complaints of bullying and harassment related to disability or special educational need, ethnicity and race, gender, gender reassignment, pregnancy or maternity, religion and belief and sexual orientation. We keep a record of all such incidents and notify those affected of what action we have taken. Our complaints policy sets out how we deal with any complaints relating to the school. Under the Equality Act 2010, we are also required to have due regard to the need to advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations. This includes steps we are taking to tackle disadvantages and meet the needs of particular individuals and groups of pupils through ensuring the learning and curriculum meets their specific needs e.g. we carefully monitor vulnerable children to ensure their needs and aspirations are met to the best of our abilities, and to ensure that they are not disadvantaged in relation to other pupils. Information the school provides can be found in our school policies; curriculum information (detailing aspects which promote tolerance, friendship and an understanding of different cultures); minutes of governor meetings; cultural links and links with other schools; broader cultural/social experiences offered to children; our collective worship. The school is good at promoting the spiritual, moral, social and culture development of all pupils, as was recognised by the OfSTED inspection in Date of publication: February 2013 Date for review and re-publication: February 2014 The Equality Act 2010 (Specific Duties) Regulations 2011 require Governing Bodies to publish equality information on an annual basis.
5 Equality Objectives As the Governing Body of a Church of England (Aided) Primary School, we recognise that the Public Sector Equality Duty requires that we: Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, victimisation and any other conduct that is prohibited under the Equality Act Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a relevant protected characteristic and those who do not share it. Foster good relations between people who share a relevant protected characteristic and those who do not share it. We wish to ensure that pupils and staff are treated fairly and given equal opportunity, provision and care, whether they share a relevant protected characteristic or not. To this end, we intend to identify how effectively we comply with the requirements of the Duty in key areas of our School activities and procedures through a process of review. Our evaluation will make use of a number of tools for measurement of success, including: School Data (e.g. RaiseOnline to evaluate the progress of different groups of pupils (boys, girls, pupils with SEN, pupils who receive free school meals, the children of forces families, pupils with English as a second language, pupils with a disability, etc.) Pupil surveys Equality data gathered during new staff appointments Equality data gathered during annual staff appraisal via a monitoring form Parent Questionnaires Objective 1 In support of this the first Objective is to carry out a Pupil Survey on issues of fairness. The information gathered will assist the Project Group in assessing whether there is statistical evidence that particular groups of pupils are treated unfairly. Objective 2 As a school with a Christian foundation, the Project Group will assess whether pupils of the School are treated with fairness, and achieve successful progress, regardless of religious affiliation. Note: The legislation requires one pupil-related objective to be set. Date of publication: April 2012 Date for review and re-publication: March 2016 The Equality Act 2010 (Specific Duties) Regulations 2011 require Governing Bodies to publish equality objectives at intervals of no more than four years but schools should publish detail on progress towards these objectives on an annual basis and publish this detail on the school s internet site.
