3 Emotional Intelligence (EI) EI = How we handle ourselves and our relationships. EI levels can determine life success more than our IQ. Emotional intelligence: Domains Personal Competence Self Awareness Social Competence Relationship Management (Goleman, Boyatzis, McKee, 2002) Self Management Social Awareness Emotional Intelligence: personal competence Self-awareness: Emotional self-awareness Reading your own emotions Recognizing their impact on others Spectrum Health

6 Personal competence: adaptability Adaptability: Flexibility in adapting to changing situations or overcoming obstacles Share an example of when you adapted well. Why is this important? Personal competence: self-management Achievement: Drive to improve performance to meet inner standards of excellence Internal rewards External rewards Personal Competence: self-management Optimism: Seeing the upside in events Can glass ½ empty people become glass ½ full people? Good News! It is a habit that can be learned: Focus on what is working well (Felgen, 2007) Spectrum Health

7 Practice a new habit: optimism Situation: Something else changed at work: I don t like it when things change all the time. I wonder how this change might improve the work we do. Situation: I m working with FREDA today. Freda is mess. Nobody likes working with her. I have an opportunity to help Freda improve and help the team by doing so. Situation: Somebody brews decaf coffee. Why bother! Maybe somebody is trying to improve their health. Emotional Intelligence: social competence Social awareness Empathy Relationship management Developing others Conflict Management Building bonds Teamwork and Collaboration Social Competence: social awareness Empathy: Sensing other s emotions, understanding their perspective, taking active interest in their concerns. Using this emotional experience to gain insight about the other. NOTE this does not include taking on their emotions and feelings Good moods = good work Smiles are the most contagious emotional signal Spectrum Health

Ask for honest feedback!
