1 Employability Skills Preparing for and learning from a work Level: Level 1 Credits: 3 Unit 13 Learning Outcomes The learner will: 1 Be able to plan for work s Assessment Criteria The learner can: 1.1 Outline personal goals in relation to a work 1.2 Outline key information relating to a work 1 Knowledge, understanding and skills Examples of personal goals could to develop team working skills with new people to learn new skills available at the work to improve self confidence in unfamiliar situations to find out if this type of work is enjoyable to find out if this type of work would be a suitable career choice Examples of key information relating to a work could organisation name/address to plan travel arrangements contact name and telephone number named person to contact if late or unable to attend work name of person to report to- in order to greet appropriately; named contact to ask for at reception purpose and activities

2 of work organisation, eg to maintain cars carry out repairs/carry out MOTs; to provide leisure activities provide swimming lessons/provide a venue for squash club to plan suitable clothing for work type of work to be done during work to feel confident by knowing what you might be expected to do start/finish times to plan travel arrangements 1.3 Plan travel arrangements to a work 1.4 Identify suitable clothing for a work Examples of travel arrangements planning a bus route booking a taxi identifying how long it takes to walk to the work from home organising a lift Examples of suitable clothing clothing in line with dress code, eg smart uniform - so recognised by the public as staff particular clothing for the job, eg overalls for a garage mechanic, hard hat for building site, heavy boots for outdoor work 2

3 2 Understand what is expected on work s 2.1 Outline behaviour expected by a workplace supervisor 2.2 Outline attributes expected by workplace colleagues Examples of behaviour expected by a workplace supervisor and why expected could arriving on time lateness may affect the work of others arriving ready for work if wearing incorrect clothing may be sent home to change being willing to learn new skills at work new skills learnt will boost success of work phoning in if unable to work work supervisor can make alternative arrangements informing workplace early if time off needed for health appointment work supervisor can make adjustments to work schedule following instructions so work task completed correctly behaving sensibly so no one gets injured Examples of attributes expected by workplace colleagues and why these are expected could being helpful - improves atmosphere at work asking questions - shows interest and will help to ensure work tasks completed correctly not wasting time - may affect productivity of other workers 3

4 3 Be able to complete tasks during work s 2.3 Explain why personal hygiene is important for a work 3.1 Outline work tasks and their purpose 3.2 Identify skills and resources needed for work tasks 4 Examples of the importance of personal hygiene could clean hands and fingernails on a food counter so germs not spread clean and ironed clothing in a retail environment to give a good impression to customers showering each morning before working in an office so pleasant for others in the same space Tasks should: be straightforward be completed with minimal support ie occasional checks by supervisor on quality/performance have a limited number of steps eg fill buckets with water to the required depth, add flower food and place correct number of buckets onto a flower trolley and wheel into the cold store; weigh mail and select correct postage rate for weight, set postage meter and print postage label, bag mail for collection. Examples of skills needed and why they are needed could transferable skills eg ability to communicate appropriately with customers/clients to ensure return business sector-specific skills eg confident/engaging manner when reading a story to maintain

5 nursery children s interest and enthusiasm Examples of resources needed could equipment materials clothing instructions time 3.3 Carry out straightforward tasks with minimum support by a) confirming understanding with a supervisor b) following instructions c) working safely d) checking standard of work Examples of ways of confirming understanding with a supervisor could listening to instructions from supervisor repeating the instructions back to supervisor writing instructions down asking questions to clarify instructions Examples of ways of working safely could keeping work area tidy using safety equipment provided clearing up spillages promptly Examples of ways of checking that tasks have been completed to an acceptable standard could asking the colleague if the photocopied documents were to their satisfaction asking the supervisor for feedback 5

6 4 Be able to reflect on work s 4.1 Outline things that went well before and during a work 4.2 Outline improvements needed in relation to a) preparing for a work b) carrying out work tasks 4.3 Indicate how personal goals for a work have been met Examples of things that went well could sorted out the travel arrangements and practised the route got on well with other workers enjoyed work tasks learnt new skills increased confidence Examples of improvements needed in relation to preparation could get to bed earlier as long day at work and tiring use bicycle rather than walk to work take a packed lunch Examples of improvements needed in carrying out tasks could concentrate more when listening to instructions more practice of needed of sectorspecific skills work more quickly and accurately improve attitude, eg be more positive when asked to clean up Refer to personal goals set in 1.1 6

7 5 Understand how learning from work s is important for the future 5.1 Outline how skills and attributes developed during work might influence career choices 5.2 Outline how knowledge gained during work supports career choices 5.3 Identify new personal goals for future work or work s Examples of how skills and attributes developed might influence career choices more confident with unfamiliar people so could consider a customer/client facing career choice development of sector specific skills eg from working in an ICT support role would consider a job in ICT customer support Examples of how knowledge gained supports future career choices enjoyment (or not) of particular work environment, of working with customers/clients, of particular business sector eg retail discovered aptitude/no aptitude for this particular work long term prospects in this area of work are good/poor Reflect on how this knowledge supports original career plans Examples of new personal goals might to be more confident when answering the telephone to work more quickly not to be afraid to ask for help to develop a more positive attitude to work 7
