4 ELEMENTs Atoms are the simplest form of an element Identified by the atomic # (# of protons)

5 Arrangement of the Periodic Table 1. By metals, non-metals and metalloids According to their physical properties 2. By groups 18 columns # of valence electrons Determines their chemical properties Reactivity How they react chemically in chemical reactions. 3. 19 18 Columns Elements have the same # of Valence Electrons They have the same chemical properties including reactivity Groups/Families

20 Valence Electrons and Reactivity Atoms are very reactive if they only need to gain or lose 1 or 2 valence electrons to become stable. Groups 1, 2 and 17 Atoms are stable and unreactive when they have a full outer energy level. Group 18 A total of 8 electrons on the outermost energy level. 2 if the atom only has 1 energy level (only 2 can fit).

22 Group #1 All metals 1 Valence Electron Very reactive Metals Most reactive they only need to lose 1 valence electron to react. Light weight and soft metals Alkali Metals

23 Alkaline-Earth Metals Group #2 All Metals 2 Valence Electrons Very reactive but less than group #1. Only have to lose 2 valence electrons in chemical bonds

24 Valence Electrons Group 1 all elements have 1 valence electron Group 2 all elements have 2 valence electrons

25 Transition Metals Groups # 3-12 All metals 1 or 2 valence electrons Less reactive than group #2 Also contains lanthanide and actinide series Lanthanides Rare Earth Metals Actinides Radioactive Metals

26 Groups # Elements change from metals to nonmetals and include the metalloids. Atoms have 10 fewer valence electrons than the group #. Boron Group #13-3 valence electrons Carbon Group #14-4 valence electrons Nitrogen Group #15-5 valence electrons Oxygen Group #16-6 valence electrons

27 Halogens Group 17 All nonmetals 7 valence electrons Very reactive Elements Only need to gain 1 more electron for a total of 8!

28 Noble Gases/Inert Gases Group # 18 All nonmetals 8 valence electrons except helium only has 2 because it only has one energy level They are all unreactive elements they have a full outer energy level (8 valence electrons)
