3 WHAT ARE THE PSSA S? Pennsylvania System of School Assessment Every 3 rd grade student throughout the state is required to take this test Results are used by principals and teachers to help monitor student growth and achievements

4 Test taking strategies First ~ Read the questions that go with the passage Second ~ Read the passage (story, text, selection) Third ~ Read the questions for that passage again eliminating answers you know are incorrect (wrong) If it is a fill in the blank question, read each choice in the blank to see which makes the best sense Eliminate answers that are incorrect (remember you can put an x at the end of the answers your think are incorrect) If it is a written question, be sure to use POQ (part of the question) in your answer. Also include examples from the story. Two reasons I think Bear is nice are Fourth ~ Go back in the passage to find answers you are not sure of Highlight the answer Write the test number question beside the answer

5 Vocabulary Skills to Practice Homonyms words that have the same spelling and the same pronunciation but different meanings (Example: saw, saw) Synonyms words that mean the same (Example: big, large) Antonyms words that are opposite (Example: hot, cold) Prefix and Suffix words parts at the beginning and end of a word Exaggeration stretching the truth Personification when an animal or character in the story acts like or has characteristics of a human being Simile comparing using like or as

6 Other Common Test Vocabulary Passage/Selection/Article the piece to read to help answer reading questions Summary - retelling the story in your own words using the main details Verse/Stanza individual sections or parts of a poem that it is organized by Author - the person who write the story Narrator the person telling the story Characters the people or animals in the story

7 Reading Skills to Practice Compare and Contrast how things are similar and how they are different Fact and Opinion facts you can prove true or false. Opinions are how someone feels about something Setting where and when the story is taking place Drawing Conclusions based on information from the story and what you already know what you can conclude about the events in the story Main Idea/Problem and Details ~ what the story is mainly about and the details that support it

9 Types of Writing (genre) Narrative a type of writing that describes human events Persuasive a type of writing that persuades you to do something Biography a type of writing that is a detailed description of someone s life Play a type of writing in which each character has a speaking part Nonfiction a type of writing, which includes facts and real events Fiction a type of writing in which events are made up Poem- a type of writing in which contains rhythm and rhyme Recipe a type of writing in which follows steps to make something Advertisement a type of writing that promotes or announces a product, service, or event Craft a type of writing which tells you how to do or make something (an object, not food)

10 Examples for the Writing Test In your own words, summarize the passage. Be sure to include at least one important event from the beginning, the middle, and the end of the passage. Give at least two ways the poems are alike and one way they are different, using specific examples from the poems to support your answer. How does the juniper tree become the narrator s friend? Use at least three examples from the passage to explain your response.

14 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Due to testing in the morning, students will have specials in the afternoon Due to testing, Science and Social Studies will be integrated into the Reading curriculum for the time being Homework will be at a minimum Snacks will be provided for your child each day Some students may be placed into small group settings for their testing (IEP, Title 1, students needing additional time)

15 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (CONTINUED ) Use #2 pencils ONLY May draw a Graphic Organizer but one will not be provided for them Untimed May be put in small group/math ONLY read aloud May use scratch paper but MUST write answers in the booklet. Scratch paper will be collected and handed in to PDE May highlight, underline, take notes on passage No extraneous marks in the booklet NOT part of your child s grade No calculator Some of the math questions may require a ruler (will be provided) May rewrite problems up and down Written response in ONLY space provided May NOT use a dictionary, thesaurus, etc.

16 AT HOME PREPARATION Please be sure your child is getting a good nights rest/sleep Please be sure your child is eating a decent breakfast at home Please be sure your child is arriving to school on time. We will begin testing promptly each day at 9:00 am. Your child will remain in the office until the testing is finished if he/she arrives late.

17 RESULTS AND THEIR MEANING We prepare students for the test by using results from 4Sight and Benchmark tests taken periodically throughout the year. If you haven t already, you will be getting further information from these tests to help your child prepare for the PSSA.
