1 January 2017 Best New Year's Resolution for your kids? Read to and with them! The best gifts for your child are often free. Easton has a real town treasure in the Ames Free Library and this library has one of the best collections of children's literature around. Find that library card, or apply for a new one, and take your child to the library once every couple of weeks and select new and engaging books together. Read with your child every night. A recent study found that 54% of children in this country are read aloud to at home (5-7 days a week) from ages 0-5. This declines to only one and three kids ages 6-8 (34%) and to one and six kids ages 9-11 (17%). The short and long term benefits to your child's education, language development and success are monumental. For more research-based statistics illustrating the benefits of reading aloud to your child at home each day, click the following links: Each child at Parkview also brings home a library book each week from our library in addition to "Book in a Bag" where teachers are putting leveled books in your child's reading bag that match their independent reading level. Reading at home with your child is the only "homework" assignment that has research-based, tangible benefits to a child's cognitive development. In addition, and maybe the most important reason to read to your child every day, your child wants/needs the special one-on-one time with you every day. Children often act-out, or misbehave, at home just to get attention from you. You may see an overall improvement in your child's behavior if you proactively give them that 1:1 attention that she or he needs through reading together. Give your child a true, long-lasting gift in 2017: pick out books together, read them together, talk about them together and make reading at home a daily routine.
2 Teaching Empathy: Pennies for Patients On Thursday, January 5 our students will assemble in our cafeteria and we will renew our commitment to the Parkview Constitution: the agreements we made with one another earlier this year so that we may thrive as a school community. Being a "bucket filler", as I am sure most of you know, is our very first agreement. To extend our bucket filling outside of our school, the Parkview Pandas will be participating in the "Pennies for Patients" campaign to raise awareness and needed funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Each classroom at Parkview will have a collection box that students can place coins into throughout the month of January. Students will be asked to do chores around their house for coins so that they can help children in hospitals who are sick. We are asking for coins - not ones, fives, tens or twenties - as reasonable donations from children. A representative from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society will help to lead the assembly on January 5. We want to teach our students about the gift of giving and let them experience themselves contributing to betterment of society and helping those who are sick and in need of some help. First Grade Family Literacy Nights - January 10, 11 All first graders, and a parent, are invited to attend our annual First Grade Family Literacy Night. This year, thanks to our PTA, we are welcoming local author and storyteller, Mark Binder, to kick off this fun and interactive night for our first graders. Parents and first graders will be inspired by this program and then have a chance to work together on various reading and writing centers located around our school. It is an interactive, fun night for you and your child and is intended to further develop our students' love of reading and writing. If you would like to volunteer for this event, please Christine Pailler at holman_christine@hotmail.com This event will run from 6:30pm - 7:30pm at Parkview and first grade classes are invited on the following days: Tuesday, January 10 - All students from Mrs. Wright's class and all students from Mrs. Eaton's class are invited. One parent per student, no siblings, please. Wednesday, January 11 - All students from Ms. Hill's class, Mrs. Wallace's class and Mrs. Resca's class are invited. One parent per student, no siblings, please.
3 Recess Reminders It is important for our students' health and wellness to get some fresh air during the school day. We try to get our students outside for recess as much as possible. If the temperature, with the wind chill factored in, is greater than 20 degrees, we will send our students outside for the 35 minute recess time. If the temperature, with wind chill, is less than 20 degrees or if it is raining or snowing, we will keep our students inside for recess. PLEASE make sure your child has a warm hat and gloves (with their name clearly written on them) each day. Also, once we have snow cover on the fields behind Parkview, students that bring snow pants, snow boots, hats, gloves and jackets to school CAN play in the snow at recess. This is an option for students. Students without snow pants or boots will still be able to go outside for recess, they will just play on the plowed blacktop.
