25 Dealing with Mental Health in the Workplace A CAW Resolution December 2008

26 WHEREAS - Mental Illness as projected will be one of two leading causes of life years lost to workers by 2020: and WHEREAS - The economic burden of mental health issues in Canada is estimated at $14.4 billion per year: and WHEREAS - With the social stigma, negative stereotypes, and lack of understanding, workers often conceal their symptoms and avoid seeking treatment: and WHEREAS - The sooner a worker obtains treatment the more successful the recovery would be, also reducing the likelihood that the mental illness will become chronic:

27 THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the National CAW develops a strategy to understand the scope and effects of mental illness on our membership

28 AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the CAW National Health and Safety Department develop and implement a national awareness campaign to educate all its members on mental illness, thereby remove the stereotype and stigma associated with this illness.

29 Barriers The stigma of mental illness often causes people to resist acknowledging or learning about mental health issues and mental illness. We aim to increase employees mental health literacy - raising awareness and providing education about mental health and mental illness.

30 Evidence- Based Program If we promote mental health, we will not only get lower rates of mental illness, but also lower rates of chronic disease. (Towards Flourishing For All: National Mental Health Promotion and Mental Illness Prevention Best Advice on a Policy for Canadians, 2008). There is an important relationship between depression and other chronic conditions prevalent in the workplace.

31 Future Directions Reducing the impact of poor mental health on chronic disease by: Depression screening and intervention Encourage people to recognize mental health problems and to seek help earlier.
