1 VIRTUS Tuching Safety Kindergarten Lessn 1: Tuching Safety Rules and Lessn 2: Safe Friends, Safe Adults, and Safe Tuches Teachers are t review the Tuching Safety guidelines frm VIRTUS and the lessn plan guidelines befre the class sessin. Parish catechetical leaders are t make sure that parents have been advised f their right t have their child pt ut f this class sessin. Suggested class date: Cycle A: Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time (February 19, 2017) Length f class sessin: minutes Archdicesan Religius Educatin Tasks, Essential Cncepts, and Standards: By the end f the class the child will be able t: Task III: Mral Frmatin Made in the Image f Gd: Fundatin f Human Dignity Recgnize that Gd lves us s much that we are made in His image and likeness. Tell them that in tday s class we will be talking abut hw Gd made each f us in his image and likeness. Did yu knw that Gd calls ur bdies Temples f the Hly Spirit? That means that Gd made us gd and hly. Because we are gd and hly, Gd wants us t learn hw t respect and t take care f ur bdies by fllwing safety rules and knwing thse peple wh help keep us safe. Opening prayer that includes scripture and begins and ends with the Sign f the Crss. All: + In the name f the Father and f the Sn and f the Hly Spirit. Amen. Teacher: A Reading frm the First Letter f St. Paul t the Crinthians (read verse 3:16). Shrt pause. Explain t the children that Gd, the Hly Spirit lives in their bdies. That their bdies are temples, hly places, like ur Churches. Thus, all f ur bdy parts are special and hly. Gd wants us t take care f them by fllwing rules t keep them safe, healthy, and hly. Review relevant vcabulary wrds and definitins. Teacher, please bw yur heads as we pray Dear Gd, yu made each f us in yur image, as gd and wnderful. Yu want us t always take care f urselves and t be with thers, wh want t keep us safe and hly. Help us t learn the safety rules, s that we can respect urselves and each ther. Thank yu fr the gifts f ur parents, and ur teachers, wh help us t learn and fllw yur rules, thrugh Christ ur Lrd. Amen. 2

Wh created yur tes? GOD Wh created yur eyes? GOD Wh created these silly little things n the side f ur heads? (pint t r tuch yur ears) GOD That s right, Gd created every part f us. Our whle bdy and even ur suls deep n the inside where Gd lives in us that we can t see r tuch. He created us in his image and likeness. Our bdies, that Gd created, are Temples f the Hly Spirit, because Gd (in the 3 rd persn f the Trinity) lives in ur suls and guides us t be hly. Because every part f ur bdies is s special, even these silly little things (pint t r tuch ears again), and Gd lives in each f us, we need t always treat ur bdies with respect and nly allw thers t treat them with respect t. Talk with children abut the difference between these regular bdy parts and their private bdy parts: We treat private bdy parts as special by keeping them cvered. One reasn is t help keep ur private bdy parts clean and healthy. Private bdy parts are thse bdy parts that are cvered by ur bathing suits. When Gd created ur bdies, he gave us an intellect (ur brains that allw us t think clear and smart), and a free will, s we can chse what is right and avid what is evil. He gave us a cnscience t! That is the little vice in ur hearts that helps us figure ut what is right and wrng. Bth Gd and ur parents can help us learn hw t knw what is right and wrng by giving us rules. These rules make it s we can be happy, healthy and hly. Smetimes thugh, peple dn t always knw what is right r they chse nt t d what is right. We can help them knw when what they are ding is wrng and nt let them harm ur bdies r suls. Ask children what t d if smene wants t tuch their private bdy parts r if an adult asks a child t tuch the adult s private bdy parts. Say, N! Run away. Tell a safe adult what happened. 3

4 Gd made us all t live in cmmunity with each ther and t help care fr the needs f thers peple. That is why he gave us rules t keep us safe and desn t want us t harm ther peple r fr ther peple t harm us. This is called human dignity, when we respect the rights f thers and they respect us because we are all created in Gd s image and by Gd, s we are all wrthy f this respect. When peple dn t treat us with respect the little vice in ur hearts that tells us if smething is gd r bad, might feel icky r strange, that means that ur hearts knw that whatever they are ding is bad. Let s lk at sme examples f things that wuld be bad and what we shuld d: Give children examples f situatins that might cme up, and talk abut what t d in each situatin: What if a grwnup asks yu t keep a birthday present a secret? What if a grwnup ffers yu a present r a treat t keep yu frm talking abut a tuch invlving private bdy parts r any ther kind f tuch that might upset yur parents? What if a grwnup wants yu t d smething that feels icky? What if a grwnup is nt tuching yur private bdy parts, but is ding smething else that makes yu feel kind f icky? What if the persn wh is trying t tuch yur private bdy parts is a bigger kid, and nt an adult? What if a grwnup tells yu that n ne will believe yu if yu tell? What if the grwnup wh make yu feel icky is smene yu really like, smene yur family knws and likes, r even smene in yur family? Ask the children if they knw what a secret is. Explain that smetimes secrets can be fun, such as keeping a birthday present a secret. But we can never have secrets when it cmes t persnal and physical safety. When smene des smething that makes us feel icky and tells us t keep it a secret, we must always tell a safe adult! Yu might ask the children t review sme f the situatins abve t recgnize when they wuld need t tell a safe adult. Remind the children that telling a safe adult is an imprtant rule that helps us t be the healthy, happy and hly children that Gd designed us t be. Explain t children wh safe adults are: Safe adults are peple wh tuch nly in ways that safe. They are peple wh dn t hurt us withut a gd reasn, such as nurse wh gives us a sht. The sht may hurt, but it will help us, which is a gd reasn. They are peple wh dn t cnfuse r scare us withut a gd reasn, such as smene wh might tell us t leave a building because f fire. Telling us abut the fire and helping us escape might be scary, but it wuld be fr a gd reasn t keep us safe. Safe adults are peple wh respect yur wishes and yur parent s rules. Remind the children that mst tuches are safe. Tell them that we are ging t practice knwing safe tuches frm thse that are nt safe. When I name a safe tuch raise yur 4

5 hands and yell yea and when I name an unsafe tuch, d a thumbs dwn r shut b, hiss, b. Yur mther gives yu a hug when yu wake up. Yur father gives yu a kiss after tucking yu int bed. Yur friend gives yu a high five when yu win the game. Smene says they want t tuch yur bdy part r they try withut even asking. Yur cat purrs and rubs arund yur legs. Smene at schl says they want t take yu dwn a dark hallway t shw yu smething. The stranger behind yu in Church tries t shake yur hand during the peace greeting. Yur friendly dg is wagging its tail and licking yur face. The next-dr neighbr child pushes yu dwn n the sidewalk. Smene is running dwn a hallway at schl and a teacher reaches ut and puts a hand n the persn s shulder t stp them frm running and pssibly falling. Ask each child t add an example f a gd tuch and a bad tuch. Remember that Gd lves us all very much and wants us always t be healthy, happy and hly. He knws that smetimes peple can make bad decisins and d bad things. He wants us t knw when smething is wrng s we can help keep urselves happy, healthy and hly and keep thers that way t. Special Safe Adults. Explain t the children that they may knw many safe adults, such as their teachers. Hwever, there are nly very few select peple, wh have the right t tuch their private bdy parts. Special safe adults are the nly peple wh may see r tuch a child s private bdy parts, and nly fr the purpse f keeping the child clean and healthy. Yur parents r guardians will tell yu wh, f the adults in yur life, are special safe adults and when these special safe adults have permissin t tuch yur private bdy parts. N ne has the right t tuch yur private bdy parts except these special peple and they can tuch yur private bdy parts nly under certain circumstances t keep yu clean and healthy. Special safe adults are thse wh have permissin t help yu take a bath, g t the bathrm with yu if yu need help, t help yu put clthes n r change clthes, r t help yu when yu are sick. Passprt t Tuching Safety Activity Prvide each child with a duble sided handut that has been dwnladed frm the Tuching Safety Supprting Materials sectin under the Educatrs tab f the VIRTUS website. Fld the handut in half with the My Passprt page n tp. Have the child write their names n the frnt page and t draw a picture f themselves in the picture frame. They can decrate the picture using the crayns, clred pencils r felt-tipped markers. As the children are creating their Passprts, use the time as an pprtunity t reinfrce the safety rules: 5

6 N ne has the right t tuch a child s private bdy parts except t keep him r her clean and healthy-and then, nly a few special safe adults have that right, as designated by the child s parents. If smene tries t tuch a child s private bdy parts r want the child t tuch their private bdy parts, the child shuld: Say, N! Run away. Tell a parent r ther safe adult what happened. Remind children that rules are imprtant, because they help keep us safe. Read the examples f safe tuches n the back page t the children. Have them draw a favrite picture f a safe tuch in the designated bx. Have the children draw pictures in the bxes n page three t illustrate safe adults and special safe adults. Remind the children that the safety rules are n the back f their Passprt. NOTE: If mre time is needed with the clring activity, the Passprt might be cmpleted at the beginning f the next class sessin.
