2 Critical Steps in this Activity Potential Hazards Risk Controls Pre-Start Safety Inspection Entering vehicle Alight from vehicle Perform vehicle check as per defect report Slip and fall whilst entering cabin Hand, arm or body crushed between door and door frame whilst entering, particularly in strong winds Slip and fall whilst leaving cabin, ankle injuries resulting from standing on loose stones or equipment Hand, arm or body crushed between door and door frame whilst entering, particularly in strong winds Soft tissue injury arising from reaching and twisting Slips, trips and falls Struck by projections from vehicles Check that ground surface is free from loose rocks, tools and other items, prior to entering the truck. Use steps and grab handles provided to maintain 3 points of contact at all times. Control movement of door with arm, shoulder and bottom to prevent door slamming against body in high winds. Alight in reverse manner to entering vehicle - 3 points of contact must be maintained at all times. Use steps and grab handles provided. DO NOT JUMP from the cabin to the ground. Look for uneven ground, water, slippery surfaces or loose items Ensure that the door is not opened into path of pedestrians or vehicles Store checklist in overhead locker, centre console or door pockets Trip hazards to be removed from parking area whenever observed. Mud, oil spills and leaks and other slippery deposits to be cleaned up immediately Requirements for equipment, vehicles, personnel, crushed rock, asphalt and other consumables determined Signs and tools must be stored in correct locations on vehicles. Driving Crushing and falls whilst checking auxiliary engine Awkward posture Struck by loose objects in the cabin Strike against interior of cab When conducting checks, raise the body and ensure that the safety support props are engaged in the locked position Climb up using the steps and stand on the platform supporting yourself Ensure that the engine is switched off and you do not touch any hot or moving part of the engine Step down in the reverse manner using steps and grabs, DO NOT jump. Driver and passengers must wear seat belts at all times when vehicle is travelling Approach designated crossings at appropriate speed and give way to pedestrians on crossings. All objects must be stored in lockers and door pockets or be securely stowed on floor behind seats Truck must be loaded in such a manner that no materials protrude above the top of the body. Tarpaulins must be in place unless travelling at low speeds within job sites All items must be lifted or secured to ensure nothing spills whilst travelling Activate warning lights on arrival at worksite. Select suitable parking area on left hand side of roadway and indicate intended movements. Approach worksite at appropriate speed Approach parking spot at low speed, drive into parking spot if possible. Check mirrors prior to reversing. If uncertain use passenger as observer. Drive with due care and within the road rules. Apply hand brake, turn off engine and engage low gear. 6 Waste Disposal Emptying / Tipping Load at Nominated Disposal Site Striking pedestrian workers and members of the public Property Damage Use side mirrors. Use rear camera (if applicable) Use passenger as a spotter whilst reversing ( if necessary ) Ensure firm and level ground. Plan shortest reversing path / track Obey directions from disposal site manager or their representative Ensure vehicle is clear of overhead power lines whilst raising truck body and / or doors REMEMBER: There are a variety of Council vehicles that require you to climb up into and down from and they have a variety of differing handgrips and steps to assist. Some vehicles can require more effort and thought than others. Some have steps very close to the wheels and guards while other vehicles have steps inset into the bodywork. Some vehicles have single handgrips, some have two. A small attention to detail can keep an injury from happening. Entering into and alighting from vehicle: LOOK Check where the step and hand grips are situated on vehicle. GRIP Securely grip hand grips while standing close to the vehicle STEP Place foot securely onto the step Lean forward if possible and let your legs to do most of the work. 8 Incorrect exit Correct exit Once again LOOK GRIP STEP Be mindful of the terrain you are about to step onto / pot hole / kerbs etc General: Muddy and wet boots or shoes can cause slipping.
