Dear Sir: Re: Pulse Generator Tartan Directional Inc. has just successfully completed the testing of its new Pulse Generator for our Mud Motors. The Pulse Generator is an agitator tool that is built into the motor. This allows the BHA to be agitated more than a conventional agitator allowing the bit to stay in contact with the bottom at all times. There are a number of advantages in using this tool versus a conventional agitator tool: Works well with our MWD System Allows the MWD System to be retrievable Pulse Generator can be run at the BHA On extended reach horizontals an additional agitator can be run up in the drill string Our Pulse Generator can be adjusted for more or less vibration I have attached our test results and parameters with our MWD. Should you have any questions or require further information, please contact us at the below number. Regards, TARTAN DIRECTIONAL INC. 2 Drilling Services 4-3/4 O.D. Pulse Generator (PG) Vibration Tool Tartan s patent pending Pulse Generator (PG) is a tool that is designed to vibrate the downhole motor assembly (BHA) to substantially decrease tubular friction (wall contact forces), which improves ROP through better transfer of the weight to the bit, and increases the reach while drilling horizontal and directional wells. Applications Horizontal and directional drilling Oriented drilling with steerable motors Features, Benefits and Advantages Increased ROP with improved transfer of weight to the bit Increased reach of BHA in steerable motor assemblies by decreasing static friction Compatible with all MWD equipment Reduces bit wear through controlled weight transfer Decreases operational costs Extends the boundaries of extended reach operations Reduction of stick-slip friction Increased 24 hour rate of penetration (ROP) PG Specifications 4-3/4 Overall Length ( m) Weight Flow Rate Operating Frequency Pressure Drop Pull To Yield Pull to Re-Run Max. 3 Drilling Services Time Signals 4-3/4 O.D. Pulse Generator (PG) PG Time Signal Flow Rate = 250 gal/min. (946 l/min.) PG Frequency No Shock Sub Amplitude (RMS) = 5.6 g Time Signal Measurement Procedure A sensor, using multiple accelerometers, is strapped to a motor while it is running at its optimal level. The equipment records the vibration, filters it, and charts the magnitude in G s (G-force) on a time graph. Acceleration is usually measured in G s, where 1 G is the acceleration due to gravity at the earth s surface. The G is not actually an acceleration unit, its acceleration that we experience as inhabitants of earth. Using accelerometers and integration method, allows for an easy and accurate measurement of G s. It s noted that the frequency correlates directly to the rpm of the motor, and the magnitude (g-force) changes with flow rate and the pulse generator setting.
Pulse Generator Test with MWD 1
Pulse Generator Test with MWD Purpose of Test The primary reason for this test was to test the MWD with the Tartan Pulse Generator attached to a 4 ¾ motor to ensure that decoding of the MWD data is possible. The initial concerns were the following: Detailed logs of the Pulse Generator showed the frequencies being produced by the Pulse Generator would fall outside of the MWD signals frequency bandwidth but be close enough that the MWD signal filtering may not be able to compensate The amplitude of these pulses generated by the Pulse Generator could also interfere with the ability to get a good signal from the MWD The close proximity of the Pulse Generator to the MWD could cause erroneous Toolface data from the MWD caused by the vibration Ensure that the Pulse Generator is not damaging to the MWD Testing Parameters The test was performed at Tartan Controls in Edmonton using their flow loop. The motor was installed into the dyno with the UBHO (muleshoe) sub and with a joint of 3 ½ drill pipe to house the MWD. The whole BHA was torqued together and the testing was performed with water and a flow rate of gpm. Test Results The amount of pressure amplitude that was seen from the Pulse Generator was enough to cause concern right away before the MWD even started to pulse; however, from the test results we were able to prove that the MWD signal was readable. The following sections show how Tartan Directional s MWD surface system was able to compensate for the additional noise and the system successfully decoded the information from the downhole tool in the flow loop test. 2
MWD Pulsing Initial Noise before MWD was Pulsing Note: Blue line shows the filtered signal and the black line shows the pressure changes (delta P) Figure 1 (showing noise and initial Pulses from the MWD) Auto Correction of Downhole Data When the MWD starts to pulse it sends up the syncronization pulses and then the signal is run through the 6 different filters simultaneously afterwhich the system decides which filter to use based on the quality of the signal. The next two screen captures (Figure 2 and 3) show how the system mis-decoded some information but was able to correct itself. 3
Figure 2 (One of the filtering stages missed the proper syncronization pulses from the MWD and mis-decoded) Figure 3 (System correcting itself) 4
Toolface Consistancy At the beginning of this test one of the objectives was to ensure that the MWD sensor data would not be affected by the vibration from the Pulse Generator. What was found was that the tool stayed steady and was not affected in our test scenario. Historical Toolface data showing previous Toolfaces staying very consistent. Incorrectly decoded Toolface which was quickly corrected by another filter MWD Damage The MWD components were taken apart and inspected after this test for early signs of damage due to vibration from the Pulse Generator. The initial test is promising with no visible signs of early damage and additional hours will be needed with close monitoring of the tools to monitor the long term effects. 5
Conclusions The MWD surface system used by Tartan Directional utilizes 6 different digital filters simultaneously and will adjust which filter is used for the final decoding of the downhole information depending on the quality of the filtered signal. This system definitely helped in the ability to decode the information with the amount of pressure changes seen from the Pulse Generator, and my belief is that without the filtering, decoding of the downhole data would have been unlikely. The flow loop test has proven to us that decoding the MWD signal with the Pulse Generator is possible. Going forward the ability to monitor real time downhole vibration will be an advantage. This would give us the real ability to monitor more closely the actual vibration that could be causing damage to the MWD. From a client perspective, real time downhole vibration gives them the ability to monitor for bit whirl and maximize ROP by changing surface parameters (ie WOB, RPM, etc). 6
technologyprofile TARTAN CONTROLS: Where Service, Value and Performance Meet TARTAN CONTROLS IS A LEADING PROVIDER IN THE DESIGN, MANUFACTURE AND SERVICE OF DOWNHOLE DRILLING MOTORS AND FISHING EQUIPMENT USED IN THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY. We are in the business of continually improving our ability to meet the customer s requirements for downhole drilling equipment in workover and completion applications, says Tartan Controls Sales & Marketing Manager, Scott McGillivray. With the most recent industry successes in horizontal multi-stage horizontal fracturing, Tartan Controls has once again shown leadership and innovation when drilling out multiple frac balls/seats. A new tool that Tartan Controls brought to market in the past year, is the Pulse Generator (patent pending), a vibration tool designed and manufactured by Tartan Controls to improve drilling abilities in deviated and horizontal wells. Only 24 inches in length, the Pulse Generator attaches to the top of Tartan s drilling motor to form the bottom hole assembly (BHA). The Pulse Generator causes the BHA to vibrate, improving the weight on bit characteristics and reducing static friction, and in turn, improving the drilling motor s horizontal reach. The main advantage of the Pulse Generator is that it allows our field supervisors to maintain weight on bit (WOB) while we are drilling in horizontal wells, Scott says. It decreases drilling times due to the fact that the constant weight on bit allows us to keep drilling at optimal levels. The Pulse Generator also overcomes coiled tubing lock-up on extended reach horizontal wells by reducing the static friction of the tubing. This ability can extend drilling applications further in horizontal wells, to a depth that was previously unattainable. As you increase the number of multi-stage frac systems that are approaching 20 or more frac stages in a horizontal well, the further you have to drill. This tool allows us to get to the final composite bridge plug or frac port to complete the drill out to total depth. In addition, the Pulse Generator eliminates the guesswork that goes into knowing how much weight on bit you have at the surface. WOB is continually changing as you drill off the frac seat, for example, so it is an important surface indicator. Another benefit: the Pulse Generator is field adjustable, meaning we can adjust the pulse frequency and amplitude. There are many types of downhole conditions and operations that we encounter, and this adjustability allows Tartan to further fine tune our tools to improve our drilling efficiencies, Scott says. The Pulse Generator is also field serviceable. We can take it from one job to the next, doing simple field servicing to make the changes necessary to go to the next job. What we try to do at Tartan Controls is give the customer the best value, service and performance available to complete the job and keep costs down. With over 1,000 horizontal multi-stage systems drilled out, we are showing our customers that we are engineering good products with solid, simple design, Scott says. We are not dependent on third-party suppliers to develop the technology. Another advantage to having its own manufacturing and design capabilities is Tartan s ability to manufacture motors specifically for disposable application. The company s sacrificial motors are brand new and dyno-tested in Edmonton before each job, to ensure they will work downhole. Typical motor drilling operations that Tartan Controls provides include composite bridge plugs, frac ball/ seats, retainers, permanent bridge plugs, cement, stage tools, debris subs, open hole, vertical extensions, fish dressing, washovers, cleanouts, high plug back, performance drilling, CTD and any other drilling that is required. Tartan provides very experienced field supervisors together with solid equipment, which assures us that we have done all the things we can do to make sure the job is completed with our tools in a single run, Scott says. With our capabilities, we can ensure peak quality at an affordable cost.
