Graduates of the Modern Languages programmes have pursued a variety of careers. Whilst teaching has become an increasingly popular choice, many of our graduates have chosen other paths, for example in sales, export, logistics, administration, translation and IT. You also have the opportunity to engage in further study. BA (Hons) Modern Languages Major and BA (Hons) Modern Languages Introduction and overview The Modern Languages programmes give you the opportunity to: combine the study of TWO languages with another subject, for example Modern Languages with Business, Modern Languages with International Relations or Modern Languages with English. study THREE foreign languages on the Modern Languages degree. If you are interested in studying languages with a subject which is not listed on the website or in the prospectus, please contact the university to see if this particular combination is available. Languages offered: French, German and Spanish are offered post-a level Spanish can also be studied on an intensive fast-track programme for beginners or near-beginners The standard honours degree is a four-year programme which incorporates a year abroad. It is also possible to complete the honours degree in three years, without a year abroad. The programme of study in French, German and Spanish (if studied post-a level) consists of two main elements: applied language study, which builds on your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in the language, together with systematic revision of grammar lectures and seminars which introduce you to the culture and society of the country. These lectures are usually given in the foreign language, both to give you more exposure to the language and to help prepare you for your year of study abroad. First year lectures concentrate on an introduction to the culture of the country and on developing some of the study skills and transferable skills essential for successful completion of the degree You will also study your additional subject alongside your two languages. If you started Spanish on the degree as a beginner, your first year is devoted to intensive study of the language. Your second year language study follows the pattern established in year one: you continue your applied language study, building on and developing the progress made in your first year you develop and deepen your understanding of the culture and contemporary history of the country during lectures and seminars, usually given in the foreign language You will also study your additional subject alongside your two languages. If you started Spanish on the degree as a beginner, your second year is devoted to further intensive study of the language. Year two also incorporates preparation for an optional third year abroad.

3 Languages as a Minor Introduction French, German and Spanish are the three modern European languages that are taught to Honours degree level at the Plymouth Business School. Entry onto the French or German minor requires you to have reached A level standard. If studying Spanish there are two possible entry points available, either from A level, or ab initio (beginners level). Your studies will last for three or four years depending on whether or not you spend a year of study or work placement abroad. Year Three/Placement year Students on the Modern Languages programmes are encouraged to spend their third year either studying at one of our partner institutions in France (or a francophone country), Germany or Spain, or on a work placement. Alternatively, you can opt to complete your final year at the university without spending a year abroad. You will continue to develop your languages, focusing increasingly on advanced language skills. You will also be required to produce a dissertation or project for each language. This is an autonomous piece of work, produced with guidance, which enables you to work on a topic which interests you relating to each language/country and to put into practice the skills which you have developed during the first two years. Year Four (for students who have spent their third year abroad) In your final year, you continue to develop your languages, focusing increasingly on advanced language skills and tackling more challenging linguistic tasks. You will also be required to produce a dissertation or project for each language. This is an autonomous piece of work, produced with guidance, which enables you to work on a topic which interests you relating to each language/country and to put into practice the skills which you have developed during the first two years of study and the year abroad. Career Opportunities The skills you develop on a language programme equip you for the world of work in today s Europe.
