Geographically, its scope includes the Middle East and regions both East and West of it. Its geographical focus will shift with the shift in the centers of Muslim power and the Islamic Civilization from the Arabian Peninsula to other regions. Given the limitations of time, our geographical focus will be restricted to the Near East, Central Asia and South Asia. The Maghreb (West Africa) and South East Asia will remain victims of the limitations associated with such a survey course. The course will begin with an introduction to reading history and to historiographic issues related to the study of the Islamic world, including the most obvious one i.e. the use of the adjective Islamic with reference to such a complex phenomenon. Students will be made aware of the types of sources modern historians have available to them for the study of the Islamic world and their particular modes of engagement with them. Historigoraphic issues pertaining to sources, their use, historical explanation, etc., will be highlighted throughout the course of the semester in both the readings and the lectures. We will begin our chronological study with the Arabian and Near Eastern context of the birth of Islam, the life

2 of the Prophet Muhammad, the Rashidun caliphs and the Ummayad succession. We will continue with the Abbasid revolt against the Ummayads, the emergence of the so-called Golden Age of Islam and the beginning of the Abbasid decline. The discussion of the decline of the Abbasid caliphate will be accompanied by the shift to the emerging regional caliphates and dynasties and the dawn of the so-called Shi a century in the Near East. Moving eastwards, we will cover the Turkic dynasties, the Sunni revival and Muslim India. Returning to the Near East, will pick up the historical thread with the Ayyubid succession to the Fatimids and their struggle against the crusaders, and turn to the Mamluks. We will then cover the Mongol and Timurid invasions and their long-term impact on the Islamic world. Wherever possible, translations of primary texts and pictures of examples of material culture will be introduced in class to help students relate important source material to our broader analysis. In addition to the chronological political and military history of the Islamic world, the lectures will cover and emphasize themes such as religion and Islam as a social and political force, the development of Islam as a religious tradition and a civilization in the context of the Near East, the development of different aspects of the Islamic civilization such as its literary and material culture, the relationship between Muslims and non- Muslims, the different social actors involved in shaping the Islamic world, high culture and folk culture, etc. The complex manifestations of religion as a social force will be of particular importance to us, as will be the distinctive forms of political, social and economic life that developed as a consequence of the emergence of Islam and the subsequent Islamic conquests. It is hoped that the identification and explanation of significant long-term patterns, and the discussion of how each caliphate/dynasty contributed in important ways to the development of the Islamic civilization will help students avoid getting lost in the numerous dynasties and related names, dates and events mentioned. Students are reminded that this is not a course in Islam as a religion, or even Islamic intellectual history, so our focus and approach will be typical of an introductory course to a geographical region or civilization. As such we will be focusing on social, military, economic and political aspects of life over and above narrowly intellectual and religious ones, though we will certainly be stressing the latter in relation to the former. Students will be given a chance to further explore these and other themes in presentations. Possible topics include the transmission of knowledge in Muslim societies, law and society, women and their lives, popular religion and popular culture, a picture of the premodern city in the Islamic world, distinctive modes of art and architecture, court culture, Jews in the Muslim world, European perceptions of Islam, Muslim contributions to the European renaissance, the Crusades in the Muslim experience, the culture of al-andalus, Muslim historiography, traveler accounts, etc. Students are encouraged to do the readings consistently and read them for content based on our concerns and interests, rather than getting lost in unnecessary details and specifics. Reading with precision will make the process quicker and make understanding easier. This will involve alternating between reading close, skimming and skipping different parts of the reading. Note: All students are required to maintain the standards of academic integrity and acceptable behavior articulated in the university s policies. Any breach of the norms of conduct will be dealt with according to official procedures. This includes maintaining class decorum such as refraining from talking amongst one another, using cellphones, coming to class late, etc. COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. Give students a basic chronological understanding of the rise and spread of the Islamic civilization in the premodern world, and open the way for future courses in the subsequent history of the Islamic world or the history of specific regions. 2. Introduce to students to historiographic questions relevant to the study of the Islamic world, and to reinforce basic lessons in historical thinking shared with other history courses.

3 3. Give students a picture of the premodern Islamic world so that they can imagine what premodern Muslim life looked like, and how it might differ from the life of Muslims and people today. 4. Give students a foundation for a deeper study of classical Islamic intellectual and religious history so they may be able to integrate it with social and material history under the broader rubric of cultural and civilizational history.
