1 Fall 2013 Spanish 1B (Section 2/Class number 84909) Instructor: Dr. Heeju Han Office: MRP 2055 Office hours: T, Th. 10:20-11:20 am and 1:30-2:00 pm Catalog Description: Continuation of SPAN 1A with a greater emphasis on the development of speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills. Cultural knowledge continues to be an important component: elements of Hispanic character, customs, and the way in which the Spanish and Latin American peoples view themselves and others in the world is studied. Student Learning Objectives/Outcomes. At the end of this course students can reasonably expect to: Demonstrate that they are able to engage in conversations, provide and obtain information in culturally appropriate ways in the following areas: o At the market: Buying and ordering food in a market, restaurant; referring to people, places and things; actions, desires and preference in the present; events in progress; the origin of produce; typical meals from the Hispanic world o Your house: your house or apartment; expressing relationships in space and time; pointing out things and people; daily routines and household chores; giving informal orders and advice; daily life in Spanish speaking countries o The city: places and things in the city; giving formal orders and instructions; talking about past actions; transactions at the post office and the bank; description of Machu Picchu, a world heritage site; talking about to whom and for whom something is done o Shopping center: purchasing clothes, shoes, accessories, and gadgets; past events; comparisons; household appliances Demonstrate that they are able to understand and interpret written language on a variety of topics. Demonstrate that they are able to understand the culture where Spanish is spoken through comparisons of the culture studied and their own. They are able to perform internet searches in the language and explore the perspectives, products, and practices of the culture. Demonstrate that they are able to understand the nature of Spanish through comparisons of the language studied and their own. Demonstrate that they are able to understand and respond to simple statements and questions and participate in informal conversation within the cultural context. Required Textbooks: Maria C. Lucas and Laila M. Dawson, Con Brío!, (3 rd ed). Volume 2.. Wiley, 2013.
2 Grading Criteria: 1 midterm (30%) Final Exam (30%) Homeworks (30%) Attendance/Participation (10%) Homework: Most homeworks will be done online. Homeworks should be done by certain date and time. If you do not complete your work online on time, you will get only half points of what you have submitted. Workbook and Lab Manual will be the materials for your homework assignment and these are for your homework grade. Attendance and Participation: It is required to attend the every class. If you anticipate your absence, you have to notify me in advance. It is also important to participate in activities in class. You do not have to speak only in Spanish but I encourage you to speak it as much as possible. Absences over 6 times will affect your final grade. For every absence over 6, 0.5% will be deducted from your final grade. Grading scale: %=A, 90-93%=A-, 87-89%=B+, 84-86%=B, 80=83%=B-, 77-79%=C+, 74-76%=C, 70-73%=C-, 67-69%=D+, 64-66%=D, 60-63%=D-, 59% or less=f Avoid all forms of Academic Dishonesty, including cheating and plagiarism. These are distracting and disruptive. If you happen to buy e-book, please print certain pages out before attending the class. See CLASS PLAN for the pages you need to print out for each class. Students are not permitted to make audio or video recordings, or take photos in the classroom.
