Rationale At Strathalbyn Christian College we celebrate the diversity and uniqueness of all of our students and want to establish an environment that removes competitive dress and fashion to become an issue that detracts from the educational focus of the College. The intention of this Policy is to set clear and fair guidelines that enable students to maintain reasonable standards of appearance and to be comfortable in a practical, well designed uniform. Scope The College uniform is compulsory for all students and the complete uniform description is outlined below. References Related Policy 1. Family Handbook 2. 2 Policy GENERAL UNIFORM The Strathalbyn Christian College Uniform consists of formal uniform and sports uniform. 1. Formal Uniform 1.1 Formal uniform is a blue shirt for primary students and a white shirt for secondary students along with coordinating skorts/skirts/shorts/trousers according to the uniform information outlined below. 1.2 Formal uniform is always worn for College photos and Presentation Evenings. It will usually be worn when students are representing the College in the community, but depending on activities sometimes the Sports uniform may be more appropriate. 2. Sports Uniform 2.1 Sports uniform is green polo shirts (apple green for primary and bottle green for secondary) and blue rugby shorts. 2.2 Primary students wear sports uniform on their PE and drama days (as directed by teachers according to the class timetable). 2.3 Secondary students wear sports uniform for double periods of Physical Education, Outdoor Education or Sustainable Living/Earth & Environmental Studies. 2.4 Senior College students (Years 11 and 12) will have one day per week that sports uniform may be worn if they don t usually participate in any of the abovementioned subjects. 3. Sport 3.1 Sport shoes may be of any colour but shoes must be a cross trainer or running shoe; skate shoes are prohibited. Only plain white socks are acceptable with sports footwear. 4. Headwear 4.1 An approved College hat is required to be worn outside at all times throughout the year. This is intended to limit the risk of our students developing skin cancer in later life. It is not intended that students should have to wear a hat while crossing from one building to another. We have a 'No Hat, No Play' policy, which requires students to wear, hats for any activity or play outdoors and during recess and lunch times. Hats are to be clearly labelled with the student s name. 2

Jewellery 5.1 The College recognises that jewellery is a part of acceptable culture and only becomes a problem when it is used to draw attention or make a defiant statement against the school and its values. 5.2 Secondary students are permitted to wear simple jewellery, if they so desire: a wrist watch up to two plain studs or sleepers in each ear (boys may wear a single plain stud or sleeper earring in one ear) a plain ring 5.3 Primary students are permitted to wear simple jewellery, if they so desire: a wrist watch one plain stud or sleeper in each ear (boys may wear a single plain stud or sleeper earring in one ear) 5.4 Jewellery must be plain silver or gold. Sleepers should be no larger than 1.5cm diameter, and studs may be up to 0.4cm diameter. 5.5 No other items of jewellery are permitted. 5.6 As we do not permit students to draw on themselves we also do not permit them to attend school with tattoos. So, body art in the form of piercings (other than is school policy) and tattoos (real or fake) are not permitted at our College. 5.7 Excessive make-up is prohibited in secondary. No make-up is permitted in primary. Nail varnish is not permitted to be worn in the College. 6. Bathers 6.1 It is compulsory for all secondary students to have College bathers (navy) and rashie (in their House colour). 6.2 College bathers are optional for primary students, but are compulsory for those primary students participating in College interschool swimming events. 6.3 Primary girls with two-piece bathers must wear them with a rashie. 7. Hair 7.1 Extremes in hairstyles and colour, as determined by the Principal and Deputy Principal are not permitted. Hairstyles should be neat and reflect generally accepted standards as determined by the Principal and Deputy Principal. The style must be such that hair does not cover the eyes or face. Hairstyles which will not be permitted include dreadlocks, shaved heads, mohawks, spiked hair, etc. Hair colour should be within the natural range of hair colours, ie bright red, blue, pink, two-tone, striped, fringe colour differing from main hair colour, etc are not acceptable. 7.2 If hair is worn at such a length that it does cover the eyes or face or reach the collar, it must be tied back using a scrunchie/ribbon conforming to College colours. 7.3 Hair must be tied up for sporting, food and machine-related activities. 7.4 Facial hair Year 11 & 12 students are permitted to wear a full beard which must be neatly trimmed. The College reserves the right to ask students to shave if they do not have a fully developed beard or if a beard is overly stylised. 3

4 8. Uniform Infringements 8.1 Students not wearing the correct uniform will receive a uniform infringement. Students giving the excuse that their uniform item is lost or wet or dirty is insufficient reason for being out of uniform. 8.2 In the rare instance where full uniform cannot be worn, parents must supply their child with a written explanation. The sport uniform should be worn as an alternative for that day, accompanied by an explanatory note from parents. 9. Uniform Sales 9.1 The Uniform Shop is open: Tuesday and Thursday from 8.30am am Wednesday from 2.45pm pm 9.2 If these days or times are unsuitable, please telephone the College Office so that an alternative arrangement can be made. 9.3 Both new and secondhand clothing items may be purchased. 9.4 The Uniform Shop sells all of the required uniform, except shoes. 10. Uniform Review 10.1 The College is currently reviewing the school uniform for changes in Any uniform suggestions can be ed to the Deputy Principal, Chair of the Uniform Committee. 4

This consists of the primary sports uniform, College windcheater with logo, College hat and sport shoes or sandals.
