1 SECTION ROOF SPECIALTIES AND ACCESSORIES PART 1GENERAL 1.1 SUMMARY A. Related Documents: Provisions established in General and Supplementary Conditions of the Contract, Division 1 General Requirements, and the Drawings are collectively applicable to this Section. B. Section Includes: 1. Curbs, equipment supports, pipe roller supports, and pipe portals. 2. Prefabricated roof hatches. 3. Integral support curbs, operable hardware, and counter flashings. C. Comply with the applicable provisions of regulations, codes, standards, rules and rulings as acceptable to and required by all local, subdivision, district, municipal, county, state, and federal entities whose jurisdiction has bearing or influence on the project. Subcontractor shall furnish and install the Work as shown on drawings and on the approved shop drawings, as specified herein and as needed for a complete and proper turnkey installation. 1.2 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION A. Curbs, Equipment Supports, Pipe Roller Supports, and Pipe Portals: 1. Design Requirements: Manufacturer is responsible for designing units, including anchorage to structural system and necessary modifications to meet specified requirements. 2. Structural Requirements: Design to support load of curb-mounted equipment. 3. Wind Resistance: Comply with applicable codes. 1.3 SUBMITTALS A. Submit shop drawings and product data under provisions of Section B. Subcontractor shall submit six (6) copies of Product Data and Shop drawings for approval within 30 days of contract execution and prior to shipment to site. Include related performance and test results in product data. 1. Indicate typical layout including dimensions, configuration, locations, interface with adjacent systems, clearances, tolerances, frequency of attachment, and fabrication details. 2. Submit detail drawings of transitions, intersections, and connections. 3. Submit detail drawings of accessory components not included in manufacturer s product data. C. Include general construction, configurations, jointing methods and locations when applicable, and fastening methods. D. Submit manufacturer's installation instructions under provisions of Section E. Manufacturer s Product Data 1. Submit manufacturer s descriptive literature and product specifications for each product. 2. Indicate profiles, anchorages, jointing details, flashings, and accessories. 3. Include color charts for finish indicating manufacturer s standard colors available for selection. 1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Single Source Responsibility: Furnish each product from one manufacturer, unless otherwise acceptable to Owner s Representative. B. Manufacturer Qualifications: Company specializing in manufacturing Products specified in this Section with minimum 5 years experience. BOKA Powell Project No February 2007
2 C. Roof Curb Installer Qualifications: Acceptable to manufacturer with documented experience on at least 5 projects of similar nature in past 5 years. D. Certifications: 1. Submit manufacturer=s certification that products furnished for Project meet or exceed specified requirements. 2. Submit Contractor s and installer s certification that products are installed in accordance with Contract Documents. E. Use adequate numbers of skilled workmen who are thoroughly trained and experienced in the necessary crafts and who are completely familiar with the specified requirements and the methods needed for proper performance of the work of this Section. F. Perform the Work in accordance with NRCA Steep Roofing Manual and per local building codes and standards in effect for the project site. G. Provide fire rated system as required to achieve the minimum Class B requirement H. Provide roof system designed to withstand wind uplift pressures as indicated on the structural drawings for the project. I. Standards: Comply with SMACNA Architectural Sheet Metal Manual details for fabrication of units, including flanges and cap flashing to coordinate with type of roofing indicated. Comply with NCRA Roofing and Waterproofing Manual details for installation of units. J. Provide all labor, materials and equipment to completely install prefabricated metal roof curbs at all roof penetrations including but not limited to HVAC units, duct openings, skylight gutters, pipe penetrations, roof expansion joints and exhaust fans. Comply with loading and strength requirements as indicated where units support other work. Coordinate dimensions with roughin sheets or shop drawings of equipment to be supported. Fabricate of structural quality sheet steel (ASTM A 570, Grade as required). Fabricate with welded or sealed mechanical corner joints. Provide complete with base profile coordinated with roof insulation thickness. Provide reservative-treated wood nailers at tops of curbs, coordinate with thickness of insulation and roof flashing as indicated. K. Except as otherwise indicated or required for strength, fabricate units of minimum 14-gage (0.0747"), G60 galvanized or galvalume metal, and to minimum height of 14", with fully mitered and welded corners, integral base plates, internally reinforced with 1' x 1' x 1/8" steel angle (curbs with any side longer 3'-0") factory insulated with 1-1/2" thick three pound density fiberglass insulation, curb liner (painted with white primer) and factory installed pressure treated nailers. 1.5 COORDINATION A. Coordinate installation of hatches with roof framing, adjacent sheet metal flashing work, and curb installation. B. Verify sizes of roof openings and curb dimensions. 1.6 WARRANTY A. Provide warranty under provisions of Section B. Provide manufacturers 20-year NDL warranty for roof system and 1-year warranty on waterproofing labor and appropriate manufacturer s warranty on waterproofing material. Provide installer s 3-year warranty and guarantee for installation defects. C. Warranty proper operation, and against defects in material and workmanship for a period of 5 years. PART 2PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACTURERS A. Acceptable Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements indicated, provide products of one of the following: 1. Bilco. 3 2. Babcock Davis. 3. Milcor. 4. Bristol Fiberlite Industries 5. Naturalite/EPI, Inc. B. Substitutions: Under provisions of Section MATERIALS A. Structural Quality Galvanized Steel: ASTM A 446 with galvanized coating complying with ASTM A 525, Z275 coating. B. Commercial Quality Galvanized Steel: ASTM A 526 with galvanized coating complying with ASTM A 525, Z275 coating. C. Aluminum Extrusions: ASTM B 221, alloy and tempered as required by manufactured for intended use but not less than strength and durability qualities of alloy 5005-H15. D. Aluminum Sheet: ASTM B 209, alloy and tempered as required by manufactured for intended use but not less than strength and durability qualities of alloy 6063-T5. E. Preservative Pressure Treated Wood: Softwood lumber treated in accordance with AWPA C2 for above grade use. F. Bituminous Paint: SSPC Paint 12. G. Roofing Cement: ASTM D 4586, Type I. 2.3 PIPE PORTALS A. Provide pipe portal unit of laminated acrylic coated ABS plastic curb cover with prepunched mounting holes and molded sealing ring on the collared opening, an EPDM compression molded rubber cap of pipe sizes required for the Work, and all necessary stainless steel clamps. B. Acceptable Products and Manufacturers: 1. N-Series Pipe Portal, Custom Curb, Inc., Chattanooga, TN. 2. PCC Cap, The Pate Company, Broadview, IL. 3. Pipe Portal System, Roof Products Systems Corporation, Bensenville, IL. 4. TP-1 Piping Cover, ThyCurb Division of Thybar Corporation., Addison, IL. C. Description: 1. Manufacturer=s standard ABS and EPDM rubber boots to accommodate 3/8 through 6 inch diameter pipe. 2. Furnish complete with stainless steel hose clamps. 3. Accommodate quantity and size of piping to pass through portal caps. 4. Fabricate for mounting atop manufacturer=s curb. 2.4 ROOF HATCHES A. Fabricate units of sizes shown, single-leaf type unless otherwise indicated, for 40 lbs. per sq. ft. external loading and 20 lbs. per sq. ft. internal loading pressure. Frame with 9" high integral-curb double-wall construction with 1-1/2" insulation, cant strips and cap flashing (roofing counter-flashing), with welded or sealed mechanical corner joints. Provide doublewall cover (lid) construction with 1" insulation core. Equip units with complete hardware set including hold-open devices, interior padlock hasps, and both interior and exterior plated latch handles. Provide gasketing. Fabricate units of following materials: B. Unit: 2'-6" by 3'-0" size, single leaf type, or as otherwise indicated on Drawings. C. Curb: 12 inches tall, 3-1/2 inch flange, 11 gage mill finished aluminum with 1 inch rigid insulation; integral cap flashing to receive roof flashing system; extended flange for mounting. D. Cover: 11 gage mill finish aluminum with 1 inch glass fiber insulation retained by 18 gage galvanized steel inner liner. Continuous neoprene gasket to provide weatherproof seal. E. Hardware: Manufacturer's standard manually operated type with compression spring operators, positive snap latch with turn handles inside and out and padlock hasp inside; automatic hold-open arm with vinyl covered grip handle for easy release; cadmium plated finish. F. Hinges: Manufacturer's recommended type. BOKA Powell Project No February 2007
4 G. Provide safety ladder extension at top of metal ladder. 1. Acceptable Product: Model 2 Ladder-Up Safety Post by Bilco. 2.5 FABRICATION A. Fabricate free of visual distortions and defects. Weld corners and joints. B. Provide for removal of condensation. C. Provide weathertight assembly. PART 3EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Examine conditions and proceed with work in accordance with Section B. Verify that deck, curbs, blocking, cants, roof membrane, and base flashing are in place and positioned correctly. C. Verify existing opening, curb, opening size, etc. for use at specified hatch prior to submitting shop drawings for approval. Modify and patch roof curb, flashing, etc., for a complete weathertight assembly. 3.2 INSTALLATION A. Comply with manufacturer's instructions and recommendations. Coordinate with installation of roof deck and other substrates to receive accessory units, and vapor barriers, roof insulation, roofing and flashing; as required to ensure that each element of the work performs properly, and that combined elements are waterproof and weather tight. Anchor units securely to supporting structural substrates, adequate to withstand lateral and thermal stresses as well as inward and outward loading pressures. B. General: 1. Install units plumb, level, square, and free from warp or twist while maintaining dimensional tolerances and alignment with surrounding construction. 2. Apply bituminous paint on metal surfaces of units in contact with cementitious materials and dissimilar metals. 3. Securely anchor roof accessories to supporting substrates with appropriate type fasteners. 4. Coordinate with installation of roofing system, related flashings, and waterproofing systems for watertight installation. C. Curbs: Integrate curbs with adjacent roofing systems, base flashings, and counter flashings to create watertight conditions. D. Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. E. Apply bituminous paint on metal surfaces of units in contact with cementitious materials and dissimilar metals. F. Hatches: 1. Secure flanges to deck by bolting or welding. 3.3 CLEANING A. Clean as recommended by manufacturer. Do not use materials or methods which may damage finish or surrounding construction. Touch up damaged metal coatings. B. Clean primer, adhesive, flashing cements, and other products from surfaces, exposed sheet metal and bellows. C. Perform final cleaning under provisions of Section PROTECTION A.
