1 NM-422ETH NMEA-0183 Multiplier With Ethernet Interface User Guide V1.00

3 3 TABLE OF CONTENTS
4 4 1. INTRODUCTION The NM-422ETH is a two channel NMEA-0183 input / four channels NMEA-0183 output multiplier. It enables data distribution from two NM-0183 sources (primary and secondary with priority encoding) to all NMEA-0183 instruments through four talker ports and direct PC connection through RS-232. In addition the Ethernet interface enables connection of the NM-422ETH in a local TCP/IP network topology. Data from PC s charting system can be delivered back to the autopilot from the same RS-232 port or Ethernet interface (user selectable via jumper) which acts bidirectional (talker and listener). 2. OPERATION The NM-422 acquires NMEA-0183 sentences from the most significant input and immediately sends them to the four general purpose outputs and the RS-232. A watchdog timer routine supervises if the NMEA signal is correctly applied in the primary input and switches to the secondary input whenever there is no NMEA sentence for at least eight seconds. In this case secondary input starts receiving data if there is an instrument attached. If not, device automatically returns to the primary input after eight seconds. When secondary input is already in receiving mode and a NMEA signal is applied to the primary port, device immediately switches to the primary input. In the case that no signal is applied to any input, device circles around sampling the two listener ports every eight seconds until a NMEA-0183 signal appears to any of the two listener ports. 3. INPUT PORTS The NM-422 has two input ports that can be connected to any instrument indented for marine use that can output NMEA-0183 signals. Each one of the two listener ports is optoisolated as specified in NMEA-0183 protocol, thus data(-) pole should never been connected to NM-422 ground. If the instrument s talker port is single ended, connect that terminal to the Ina(+) or Inb(+) input and tide the Ina(-) or Inb(-) to instrument s ground. The two listener ports can acquire NMEA-0183 sentences carried in TTL, RS-232 and RS-485/422 signal levels. 4. OUTPUT PORTS 4.1. General Purpose Talkers
5 5 Each of the four general purpose talker ports produce NMEA sentences in both RS422 and TTL signal levels, depending on the connection topology and can fan out one instrument. Current drawn from every port can be up to 20mA, efficient enough to drive every NMEA compatible instrument RS-232 Interface The RS-232 port can deliver NMEA sentences to any modern computer running the appropriate software on Windows 98 and above provided that serial communication follows the 4.800/8/N/1 standards. This port is not optically isolated and should be used for testing purposes only to avoid DC leakage. It can be used though to interface a computer system if proper isolate connection is achieved or if the computer is supplied from an isolated power supply. Connecting cable should not exceed the length of 9m Ethernet Interface It enables connection of NM-422ETH to a local TCP/IP network using a hub or switch or directly to PC if there is only one NM-422ETH. A virtual serial port then has to be created at the computer running the charting software. The PC then inputs data from NM422-ETH though the virtual serial port and acts like a serial port multiplexer. Every NM-422ETH is user configurable via internet explorer and can get IP addresses automatically via DHCP server or manually (static IP) Autopilot Port The NM-422ETH converts signals received when full duplex communication with the computer is enabled to TTL signal level NMEA-0183 sentences. User can select via two position jumper if either data from RS-232 or Ethernet interface will be delivered to autopilot port (see chapter 10) Dual Converter Function The NM-422ETH can also be configured as a bidirectional RS-232 to TCP/IP converter through dip switch settings (see chapter 9). This feature does not affect distribution of data from the inputs to the four RS-422 outputs. 5. POWER SUPPLY The NM-422ETH can be powered with in the range of Vdc. The nominal voltage of 24 Vdc is advised for powering the device in normal operation. Power input has a protection for incorrect polarity connection of the supplying voltage. When power LED lights a correct supply voltage application is indicated. 6. CONNECTION TOPOLOGIES The NM-422 can be connected as shown in figures 1,2 and 3 using all RS-422 outputs (figure 1), all TTL outputs (figure 2) or using either the RS-422 or TTL output of each port taking care not to connect the same port for both signal level outputting.
