6 Introduction Welcome to Mastering Basic Skills. In third grade, children are introduced to many new and difficult skills. Third graders use comprehension skills with their reading; they are able to write a paragraph with a main idea and supporting details; they know how to use a dictionary; and they can identify the plot, setting, and main characters of a story. Third graders math skills have also increased to include multiplication, division, and more sophisticated problem solving. Many third graders will have nightly homework and will begin to write and present simple reports. Third grade is an academic year where children make great emotional and academic leaps. The essential skills that are being taught are more difficult. They are now reading chapter books and applying math to real-world situations. Writing is no longer done simply for practice but now has a purpose. Eager eight- and nine-year-olds are ready for these new challenges, but many have developed an I-know-it-all attitude and claim they are ready to take on anything that is handed their way. Although many third graders may seem fairly confident, they still need much praise, guidance, support, and encouragement. Because they are so eager to learn (and enjoy showing off their knowledge), they sometimes will take on more than they are actually ready to handle. Children need guidance so they do not become frustrated or too self-critical when things get difficult. Third grade children like the idea of setting goals and are able to work independently for longer periods of time. They have an understanding of choices and realize that there are consequences for making wrong choices. They are learning how to work together cooperatively and how to provide some give-and-take these are the beginnings of the ability to compromise. The puzzles, games, drills, and activities provided in this book will challenge children while providing them with meaningful practice. They will be able to show off their skills and have fun at the same time. That is a great combination!
