It has one of the few remaining patches of ancient Caledonian Forest that used to stretch across the length and breadth of the country at the end of the last ice age, providing a habitat for many important rare species of flora and fauna. The woods at Dunalastair benefit from this close proximity and it is very likely that some of these species are present within them. Dunalastair means " Fort of Alexander" and was the home of the Clan Donnachaidh and the woods that bear this name can easily conjure images of Jacobite rebellions. The entrance into Drumyre Wood is flanked by tall spruce and larch and there is space here for parking vehicles as well as a large clearing for camping and campfires. Impressive views of Schiehallion, "Fairy Hill of the Caledonians", can be seen across the flat plain of the mossy peat. There are two paths leading out from the clearing. The lower path snakes down through a mixture of birch, willow and young spruce and larch and crosses over two small streams meandering down from the higher parts of the wood to the peaty area that stretches out towards the road. As you look more closely you will notice what diversity there is here, from the swirling colours of the sphagnum mosses to the many flowering plants such as bog myrtle, bog cranberry and cotton grass. The moss will feed a wide range of small animals and birds and can be seen as an increasingly rare habitat in these times of intensive land management. The second trail from the main clearing follows a circular walk to a grassy hollow that swings back to join the first trail. Woodpeckers, pine martens, black grouse and jays are amongst the species that have been spotted here as well as red squirrels and deer. Surrounding area Drumyre Wood is part of the old Creag Dhubh Forestry Estate which is situated just above Dunalastair Water on the lower south-eastern slopes of corbett Beinn a' Chuallaich. The surrounding area is renowned for its natural highland beauty including the ancient Caledonian Pine woods (Black Woods of Rannoch), series of Lochs (Rannoch and Tummel), cascading rivers (Tummel and Garry) and classic conical shaped munro (Schiehallion). Drumyre wood is very close to Dunalastair water which has the reputation as one of the best places for wild trout fishing in the UK. The nearby village of Kinloch Rannoch is a tourist and outdoor pusuit centre. Further afield is Pitlochry, a small, picturesque tourist town in the geographical centre of Scotland and a handy place to pick up supplies when you are running low. Further still is the beautiful city of Perth about 30 minutes' drive to the south. The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

This will take you to the large open area. (It may be necessary to add Pitlochry as an intermediate destination if Bing directs you via Aberfeldy). It's generally simpler to use the A9 rather than travel cross country. Travelling northwards or southwards on the A9, the recommended route would be to turn off onto the B847 at Calvine, near Bruar. Alternative scenic winding routes from the south include along Loch Tummel or via Aberfeldy. The alternative route from the north would be via the Dalnacardoch to Trinafour single track road. Taking the recommended route head generally west on the B847 passing through Trinafour. Continue south on the B847 and pass the road signposted for Tummel Bridge on your left. Stay on the B847 signposted to Kinloch Rannoch and after about 2¼ miles you will see a "Woodlands For Sale" sign. Please park here at either end of the tarmac strip adjacent to the road. You can then walk back up the main road to the Drumyre entrance (300m) , Boundaries: Boundaries are clearly indicated by red markings on free standing posts and some trees.
