Coordinators Goals for the evening Welcome to the Northshore IB Program at Inglemoor High School A climate of achievement, a culture of respect, and a community with spirit Gain an understanding of the International Baccalaureate Program and options. Learn about the upcoming changes to the IB with the four year high school. Learn about the changes to the waiver process. Be assured that there is room at Inglemoor for students wishing to do the IB. What is International Baccalaureate? This is a pre-university course of study based on international standards. It is infused with global consideration in every subject area. It represents in-depth studies across the curriculum, independent research, complex assessments, and compassion for others. Why think about Pre-University planning now? The College Board recommends that ninth grade students. Enroll in college-prep classes and prepare for advanced level junior and senior courses Attend college and career fairs Tour college campuses Ninth grade is more important than your senior year. 1

HEXAGON Language A1 IB Basics Language B Experimental Sciences Extended Essay ToK Creativity, Action, Service The Arts & Electives Individuals & Societies Mathematics IB courses are offered in all core curricular areas and can be taken junior or senior year. Each course culminates in a set of exams, as well as internal class work. These are evaluated based on international standards. Students will receive scores (1-7) which may earn college credit The Range of the IB Experience A Program Student takes a class, completes the class work, takes a set of exams and earns a Certificate. A Diploma Student takes classes in the five core areas, as well as one elective and completes additional requirements to earn the IB Diploma. Subjects are offered at the Standard Level and the Higher Level. IB Offerings Group One: English Literature HL, English Language and Literature HL Group Two: Spanish, French, Japanese, German, Mandarin Group Three: History of Americas HL, Psychology SL, Philosophy SL, Business and Management SL 2

3 IB Offerings Group Four: Biology HL, Physics HL, Chemistry SL, Design Technology SL/HL, Sports, Exercise and Health Science SL Group Five: Mathematics HL, Mathematics SL, Math Studies SL, Computer Science SL Group Six: Visual Arts SL and HL, Film SL Who can do the IB The International Baccalaureate Program is a district program open to all students in the NS district. Limited bus transportation is available (nearest IHS bus stop). Out of district students are welcome to participate but must provide for their own transportation. Waivers Waivers must be renewed every year and approved on a space available basis Inglemoor has always had room for waivers to do the IB program Waivers for Open October 1, 2016: Students affected by boundary adjustments November 1, 2016: All in district students grades 1-12 December 1, 2016: All out of district students grades 1-12 Enrollment projections indicate that this will not change through 2025 Who should do the IB Students that are willing to work hard and be a part of an accelerated program Students that want to challenge themselves and be a part of a program that is more than just a test Students who want to contribute to a culture of achievement Typical Freshman Schedule Pre-IB/Pre-AP English or Honors English Pre-IB/Pre-AP World History I Science (Biology) Algebra I or Geometry First Year Language Elective 3

4 Typical Sophomore IB Schedule Pre-IB/Pre-AP English Pre-IB World History II Pre-IB Chemistry or Chemistry or Biology Geometry or Alg II and Trig or IB Pre-Calc Second Year Language Elective Sample Four Year Plan: Electives It is difficult to take six academic classes and fulfill state graduation requirements Students must choose electives wisely Use 9 th grade to satisfy grad requirements Fill Fine Arts, Health and Life Fitness first Planning for Ninth Grade If an IB Diploma is in your future then take a world language Inglemoor offers five options Chinese (Mandarin) French German Japanese Spanish Planning Ahead Students are encouraged to take challenge courses Students are encouraged to work on organization, time management and work quality Remember: Your grades in ninth grade will appear on your college applications Class Registration for IB Parent information night (current 8 th and 9 th graders): October 17 th IB Day for all WAIVER 8 th and 9 th graders: November 4 th Jr. High Registration: December 1-13 How to be successful in IB Ability, Motivation and Discipline are the necessary ingredients.
