2 The Facts Social determinants of health are environmental conditions in which people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that influence many health, function, and quality of life outcomes. Examples of Social Determinants of Health include: Access to safe housing and local food markets Access to educational, economic, and job opportunities Access to health care resources Quality of education and job training Opportunities for recreational and leisure-time activities Access to transportation Discrimination, racism, and distrust of government Violence & Crime throughout the community Language & Literacy Media access (news, internet, social media) This presentation will focus on specific factors that affect health outcomes including education, housing, jobs, and food. At the end, we will test you knowledge on social determinants with a simple quiz.

3 Housing Housing directly affects everyone s health. Examples including enough space for all family members to live comfortably or a safe neighborhood for children to play outside. Poor housing situations can cause higher incidents of dangerous accidents due to poorly built environments.weak living situations can result in household environmental contaminants such as mold or toxic chemicals. The lack of affordable housing affects families ability to meet other important expenses, which causes constant financial stress. High housing-related costs place a burden on low-income families, forcing them to choose between food, heating, and other basic needs.

4 Education Education is closely tied to socioeconomic status, and effective education for children and lifelong learning for adults are key contributors to health and prosperity for individuals, and for the country Schooling is important not only for the development of education and literacy but Its influence on socialization and developmental processes of a individual as well. People with higher levels of education have better access to healthy physical environments and are better able to prepare their children for school than people with low levels of education. They also tend to smoke less, to be more physically active and to have access to healthier foods.

5 Jobs & Income Unemployment puts health at risk. According to the U.S Panel Study of Income Dynamics, Men and woman are twice as likely to develop high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease over the next year and a half. Job insecurity is a chronic stress that can lead to poor health conditions that can shorten one s life. Stress at work increases the risk of disease. When people have little control over their work, or fewer opportunities to use their skills, the risks of illness increase.

6 Food Availability of affordable, healthy food is critical to good health and is an important public health issue. Health experts say that access to good, affordable food makes more difference to what people eat than health education. In other words, it is not just a matter of educating people to eat good food the food must be available and affordable in the first place. Lack of healthier food options, may lead to obesity,cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, eye disease and tooth decay.
