3 Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan. A Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) is required for all staff and students unable to self-evacuate in an emergency. Provision for staff/students/visitors who are unable to self-evacuate is the responsibility of the organiser of the class/lecture/event/meeting. 5 Disabled Access Guide for the Grant Institute. This building is not designed for, but in part has been adapted for the use of persons in wheelchairs, persons who have difficulty with mobility or are infirm. Seating is available. Accessible and standard toilets are also available. Introduction. The Geology Department was located in Old College until 1932, when it moved to a splendid new building at the King's Buildings site about one and a half miles south of Old College. The new building, known as the Grant Institute in recognition of an endowment from Sir Alexander Grant, was opened by J.Ramsay Macdonald (Prime Minister) on the twenty-eighth January, A substantial new wing was added to the Grant Institute and opened on twentieth May 1992 by His Royal Highness, Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh and Chancellor of the University. This has allowed accommodation of all staff and research facilities in one building. On the first of August, 2002 the Department of Geology and Geophysics became part of the larger School of GeoSciences (for one year entitled the School of Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences) also including the former Department of Geography, part of the former Institute of Ecology and Resource Management, and the former Department of Meteorology, all housed in separate buildings. Today, The Grant Institute is the building housing those involved in research and teaching in Geology and Geophysics, and many similarly involved in Environmental Geoscience. Location. The Grant Institute building is located within Edinburgh Universities King s Buildings campus; this campus is well served by public transport and is accessible by car. The building is within three miles of the city centre and two miles of the main halls of residence at Pollock Halls. The campus lies between West Mains Road and Mayfield Road, about two miles south of George Square. The nearest railway line is at Waverley Station in the City Centre. The nearest bus stops are located on West Main Road approximately 160 metres from the Grant Institute Building. Numerous bus services stop on West Mains Road. Details of timetables are available from Lothian Buses, from their offices within the city and online from Persons with mobility difficulties arriving by vehicle can access the Grant Institute Building from Gate 2 which is located on West Mains Road. 7 Parking. The King s Buildings Campus has numerous parking bays but no free parking; all parking bays within the campus require a permit. City of Edinburgh Council parking is available out with the campus on the adjacent West Mains Road and Mayfield Road. See Location Map. There are currently no dropped kerbs leading from parking bays located along West Mains Road and Mayfield Road. Access from these parking bays to the campus is currently not recommended for wheelchair users without assistance. Disabled Parking Bays. There are two disabled parking bays located close to the Grant Institute Building. The first disabled parking bay is located adjacent to Entrance 1 on a level tarmac surface. Access to Entrance 1 from this disabled bay is via a tactile ramp which incorporates handrails to both sides and a moderate gradient. The second disabled parking bay is located on a level tarmac surface within the K,B House car park. Please note that access routes leading to the Grant Institute Building from the K,B House car park are not recommended for wheelchair users without assistance. Disabled parking bay within the University car park image There is ample University parking located to the front of K,B House and there is an additional car park to the front of the Grant Institute Building. Both car parks have a level tarmac surface and incorporate disabled parking facilities. There are additional University car parks located within close proximity to the building and throughout the King s Buildings Campus. See Location Map. If you do not hold a valid permit and require use of a University parking bay, it is recommended that contact is made with your host or the Transport & Parking Office prior to making your journey. 8 Outside Access. There are two entrances to the Grant Institute Building. Entrance 1. This entrance is located to the front of the building on a level paved surface and is the main entrance to the Grant Institute. Entrance 1 provides access to the Ground Floor lobby and is the recommended wheelchair access point. The main entrance can be accessed via a long ramp or a set of four steps. The ramp has a moderate gradient with a tactile surface and incorporates handrails to both sides. Steps leading to the entrance are of stone construction with handrails to both sides. Please note that these steps do not incorporate contrasting nosings but do incorporate an area of tactile paving prior to the steps. Steps leading to the main entrance image. Wheelchair accessible ramp image. Entrance 1 consists of a large set of timber double doors. These doors lead to a vestibule area and a second set of large double doors. All doors open inward, will permit the passage of a wheelchair and incorporate door handles at a wheelchair accessible height. Entrance 1 image. Second set of heavy double doors image. Page 7.

9 Entrance 2. This entrance is located on a level tarmac surface to the rear of the building and is primarily used as a staff entrance to the EMMAC labs on the Lower Ground Floor. Entrance 2 can be accessed from the K,B House car park via a tarmac footpath with a moderate gradient. Please note that the access route to this entrance is not recommended for wheelchair users without assistance. Entrance 2 consists of a secure single width door. This door leads to a small vestibule area with a recessed matwell and an additional single width door. Both doors open inward, will permit the passage of a wheelchair and incorporate viewing panels/ door handles at a wheelchair accessible height. Please note that this entrance remains locked at all times and that the lock is above a wheelchair accessible height. Moderate gradient leading to Entrance 2 image. Entrance 2image. Internal Access. There is good level access to the Ground and First Floors of the building. There is limited access to areas of the Lower Ground Floor and no level access to the Second Floor. See Floor Plans for more details. There is a corridor on the First Floor which incorporates narrow double doors. Double doors within this corridor must be opened fully to permit the passage of a wheelchair. See Floor Plans for location. Access to the Attic Study Rooms. Attic study rooms are located on the Second Floor and can only be accessed via a staircase to the rear of the building or a narrow staircase to the side of the building. Level access to Lecture Theatre 201. There is level access to lecture theatre 201 via an internal stair lift. The stair lift remains active at all times to promote ease of access. Page 8.

10 Servitors Desk. The servitor s Office is located on the Ground Floor within the main lobby. There is a servitors desk/window located within the Entrance 1 vestibule at a wheelchair accessible height. Servitors desk image. Lifts. There is one lift within the Grant Institute which serves the Lower Ground, Ground and First Floors. The lift call points and car controls are at an accessible height. The lift car controls are within comfortable reach of a wheelchair user. The control panel has braille markings. The lift has an alarm and emergency disabled call point. There is contrast between the lift wall and floor surfaces. There is no induction loop. There is no audible announcer. The lift has a mirror on the rear wall. The lift car interior has handrails There is a visual floor indicator. The lighting level in the lift is fair. Lift doors have pressure sensors. Page 9.

11 Stair Lifts. There are two stair lifts located within the Grant Institute Building. The first stair lift is located on the Ground Floor and provides access to lecture theatre 201. The second stair lift is located within the lecture theatre and is for evacuation use only. There are two staircases within the Grant Institute Building. The main staircase is located adjacent to Entrance 1. This concrete staircase provides access between the Ground and First Floors of the building. The main staircase incorporates a handrail to one side but does not incorporate contrasting nosings or tactile coverings on steps. The second staircase is located to the rear of the building. This staircase provides access between the Ground and Second Floors. The second staircase incorporates contrasting nosings on steps and a handrail to one side. Please note that there are several additional concrete staircases located throughout the building which are original features. These staircases do not incorporate handrails, contrasting nosings or tactile coverings on steps. Main staircase image. Page 10.

12 Toilets. Toilets are available on floors as follows: Male and female standard toilets are located on Lower Ground and Second Floors. An additional female toilet is located on the Mezzanine Floor to the rear of the building. There is an ambulant accessible toilet located on the Ground Floor within the standard female toilets. There is an ambulant accessible toilet located on the First Floor within the male standard toilets. The ambulant accessible toilets are not recommended for wheelchair users. The ambulant accessible toilets incorporate the following: There is left hand lateral transfer space. There is limited manoeuvring space There is no emergency pull chord. The door opens outwards The width of the accessible toilet door is suitable for wheelchairs. There are suitable dropdown and support rails for transfer. The tap type is lever operation. There is a coat hook. The contrast between the grab rails and wall is fair. The contrast between the walls and floor is good. Lighting levels are good. There are no door handles.
