2 POSITION SPECIFICATION Position Organization Location Reporting Relationship Website Chief Executive Officer American Psychological Association Washington, DC This position reports to the Board of Directors ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND The American Psychological Association, founded in 1892, is the largest scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States. APA's diverse membership includes more than 117,500 researchers, educators, clinicians, consultants and students. Through its divisions in 54 subfields of psychology and affiliations with 60 state, territorial, and Canadian provincial associations, APA s mission is to advance the creation, communication, and application of psychological knowledge to benefit society and improve people's lives. APA does this by: Encouraging the development and application of psychology in the broadest manner. Promoting research in psychology, the improvement of research methods and conditions and the application of research findings. Improving the qualifications and usefulness of psychologists by establishing high standards of ethics, conduct, education, and achievement. Increasing and disseminating psychological knowledge through meetings, professional contacts, reports, papers, discussions and publications. APA members are doctoral-level psychologists who work in myriad settings, including academic research, private psychology practice, K-12 schools, hospitals, the armed forces, court systems, prisons, business and industry, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. APA affiliate and associate members include psychology students, teachers of psychology, persons with Master s degrees in psychology, and other mental health professionals. They also include psychologists who live outside of the United States and Canada. GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE APA is governed by a Board of Directors (BoD) and a Council of Representatives (COR). The work of the COR is facilitated by its Council Leadership Team (CLT). The BoD is composed of six members-at-large, the chair of the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students, and six officers the President-elect, President, Past- President, Treasurer, Recording Secretary and APA s Chief Executive Officer. 3 Chair-elect of the CLT also participate in the BoD meetings, but do not vote. The BoD oversees the APA s administrative and legal affairs, and, with the advice and assistance of the Finance Committee, develops an annual budget. The COR is a large, diverse legislative body that has sole authority to set and implement policy for the discipline of psychology. Council is composed of elected members from state/provincial/territorial psychological associations, APA divisions and the members of the APA BoD. CENTRAL OFFICE APA's 550-plus staff support the association's mission and strategic plan through activities that include: tracking trends in the field of psychology; creating content to educate the public about behavior and psychology's scientific basis, mental and behavioral health, publishing peerreviewed journals, books and other products, PsycINFO and other databases; identifying and advocating for key federal policies and legislation; staffing APA's many boards and committees; and striving to provide members with excellent customer service and benefits. APA is composed of four directorates each of which focuses on an area of interest to APA's strategic plan. They are: the Education, Science, Practice and the Public Interest Directorates. APA also has seven business support units: Business Integration; Communications; Finance and Administration; Information Technology Services; Membership; Publications and Databases; and Strategic Programs. APA s Executive Office oversees all directorates and programs and is responsible for the implementation of APA policies and the management of the day-to-day functions of the association. APA S BUDGET APA has annual revenues of approximately $111 million. The bulk of APA s revenue derives from APA s publishing business, the world s most respected source of psychological knowledge. Additional income comes from two commercial properties its headquarters building and an investment building, both adjacent to Union Station in Washington, D.C. The rental income from these buildings supports the operating budget and is also used to support special projects. Membership dues, accreditation income, and convention income are other sources of revenue and contribute around 10 percent of APA s operating budget. APA s significant investment portfolio, largely invested in equities, balances the association s sizable real estate assets. The portfolio has long been considered a safety net that has not been used to supplement operating income. Beginning in 2014, however, a 3 percent withdrawal from the portfolio (based on the average value over the three prior years) has been used for special projects that were directly related to the APA mission. The CEO works closely with APA s BoD, APA s COR, its Finance Committee, and its Executive Management Team to assure that APA s fiscal health is maintained and APA s resources are effectively allocated and outcomes of resource allocation evaluated. AFFILIATED ORGANIZATIONS The APA Practice Organization (APAPO), a legally separate companion organization to the APA, advances and protects the professional and economic interests of practicing psychologists in a variety of practice settings. The Practice Organization supports practitioners in ways that APA American Psychological Association Chief Executive Officer Page 3 of 9

4 cannot because of its tax status as a charitable organization. As a 501(c)(6) organization under Internal Revenue Service rules, the Practice Organization is able to advocate solely for practicing psychologists free of IRS restrictions that apply to activities of a 501(c)(3) organization like APA. APA s CEO is also CEO of the Practice Organization, and the elected APA President and BoD members serve, respectively, as the President and Board of APAPO. The APAPO-Political Action Committee (PAC) is part of the APA Practice Organization. In 2005, APAPO created the Education Advocacy Trust, which is dedicated to advocating education in psychology. Another companion organization, the American Psychological Foundation (APF), provides financial support for innovative research and programs that enhance the power of psychology to elevate the human condition and advance human potential both now and in generations to come. It has its own Board of Trustees, of which the APA CEO is a member. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES The successful candidate will serve as CEO of the APA and the APAPO, with responsibility for their effective leadership and execution of their missions and goals. S/He will be a values-driven psychologist who is an ethical, innovative and transformative leader with a strong understanding of the science-based nature of the discipline of psychology. S/He will provide leadership and effective stewardship of the organizations staffs, resources, operations, programs, and finances. Further, s/he will demonstrate business, strategic communications, and political acumen and expertise. The CEO will have a proven track record of leading an organization of comparable complexity that has faced a rapidly changing environment during a transitional period. The CEO will be a dynamic and visionary leader who will bring strong strategic and critical thinking skills with an inclusive, dedicated focus to advancing the goals of APA and APAPO. The CEO will lead successful, productive, and measurable engagement between APA and APAPO, and key leaders and partners to translate the organizations influence and network of contacts into tangible outcomes in achieving their missions. S/He will lead APA and APAPO at a transformative moment in their organizational development, aligning resources with strategic priorities and focusing APA and APAPO on a strong course for the long term vitality of the organizations, and of psychology. Specifically, s/he will be focused on the following: Overseeing the development and execution of the APA s strategic plan and annual operating budget, in conjunction with its volunteer governance; providing oversight of APA properties and publishing house; exercising fiscal discipline over the investment of the organization s resources; and growing new revenue sources with value-added products and services. Forging a strong, collaborative and trusting working relationship with the APA BoD, COR, Executive Management Group, and other APA leadership (e.g., boards and committees) and staff to advance the organization s mission. Developing a strong vision and strategic plan for the promotion of psychology as a basic science, as an area of professional practice, of education, and in service of society. 5 Fostering support for psychological research, nationally and internationally, and nurturing an environment that encourages basic and applied researchers to see APA as an important professional home. Demonstrating ethical, values-driven, visionary leadership with the ability to clearly define a strong value proposition for members and prospective members. Leading the design and execution of a membership and revenue growth plan, and campaigns to support priority organizational initiatives. Cultivating and establishing relationships with APA and APAPO membership to further increase membership, maximize active engagement and ensure retention and membership satisfaction; working to attract early career psychologists to the organizations. Anticipating the public relations, political, social, and economic issues that will affect psychology, and developing action plans to address them. Forging and maintaining key alliances among state, national, and global organizations that share similar objectives, working to explore consistent messaging when possible. Working with appropriate staff to develop and/or maintain strategic alliances and relationships with key stakeholders and partners in non-profits, academia, scientific organizations, educational institutions, and government. Ensuring that APA and APAPO, their missions, and programs are consistently presented in a strong, positive way to all relevant stakeholders. Creating and maintaining an organizational structure that attracts, motivates and encourages team members to achieve excellence and establish accountability; developing and implementing internal policies and procedures that facilitate the success of team members and the organizations. Developing and sustaining a culture within APA and its governance that supports the mission and promotes synergy, transparency, and collaboration across the enterprise; leading the organization s response to the Independent Review report. Building and implementing a new branding and marketing strategy and process; developing and implementing social media campaigns that produce measurable results with regard to target audience reach, impact, and results. Inspiring innovation across the organizations to ensure their relevance and effectiveness; building on its strengths, inspiring unity, civility, and respect among the membership and leadership. 6 PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS The successful candidate will be a psychologist with an established scientific background and credibility and knowledge across the broad fields of psychology. S/He will have at least 10 years of relevant and progressively rising levels of executive leadership experience and a track record of advancing the agenda for dynamic, evolving organizations. S/He will be an innovative, strategic thinker and visionary leader with proven leadership, communications, advocacy, and relationship-building skills, and significant organizational management experience. International experience is a strong plus. S/He will have proven governance leadership experience with particularly complex and evolving governance models, and the capacity to work effectively with governance groups to advance an organization's mission. The CEO will demonstrate a clear appreciation of and willingness to support research, health care, science, professional practice, public service and education in psychology. S/He will have a willingness to embrace and, as appropriate, revise or expand, APA s and APAPO s mission and values, and will have the courage to make difficult decisions that are ultimately in the best interest of the organization. S/He will thrive on ambiguity while always being focused on the mission and delivery of results, despite rapidly changing conditions. Additional qualifications include: Track record of effectively working with diverse audiences and stakeholders to forge an organization s strategic plan and execute upon that plan with appropriate urgency, timeliness and responsiveness to outline goals, establish metrics and meet benchmarks, and deliver projects on budget. Experience leading cultural transformation and organizational turnaround effectively for a complex organization. Demonstrated understanding of the role of members in a mission-driven organization; demonstrated commitment to strong customer service culture to assure that members needs are heard and considered as part of APA s commitment to its mission. Strong support for the scientific bases underlying psychology and a commitment to the retention of a scientific presence at the APA. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, multi-culturalism, internationalism, ethics, human rights, and understanding of universal design; a clear commitment and respect for diverse viewpoints. An accessible staff leader, with a demonstrated track record for attracting and developing strong talent at all levels, and building and managing a high-performing, inclusive and collegial team in a results-oriented, fast-paced environment, with a focus on promoting staff morale for maximal organizational efficacy. A person of impeccable integrity and character; trustworthy and transparent; able to make decisions while respecting collaborative decision making processes. A credible, ethical, values-driven visionary with the courage and conviction to challenge and defend ideas, decisions and strategies before detractors. Experience working with diverse groups and agendas. A collaborative style with strong consensus building skills; proven success with conflict resolution; an effective, credible principal spokesperson before all audiences, including the media, government officials, business leaders, and the public at-large. Outstanding interpersonal, persuasion and relationship-building skills including the ability to relate well to a wide range of constituencies; outstanding comprehension skills with the ability to clearly articulate the message and command the respect of his/her audience. Demonstrated successful experience and responsibility for overseeing the financial management of an organization. Respected by policy influencers in the executive and legislative branches, on both sides of the political aisle, with an ability to help the profession advance its agenda. EDUCATION Candidates must have a psychological doctoral degree meeting the requirements of the APA Bylaws and must be a full member or fellow of APA.
